Summary | 0000614: New game mode: Team duels
Description | I had this idea in mind from some time. A thing that always bothered me in duels is the lack of team spirit, just individuals vs individuals. Well my idea for this game mode is as follow -As in team games players pick red or blue -A player is picked at random on both teams, the rest keep as spectators but assigned to a team. -Both have to duel, the first to reach the frag limit wins the duel. -When the duel ends, the team of the winner scores a point. -Both players that dueled are forced to enter the "semi spectator" state (specting but still assigned to a team). -Again two players are picked at random to play (lucky players might have the chance to play two consecutive times if the picker chooses them, this prevents players from disconnecting after they lost). -The game continues as Tennis single team matches, until a team reaches the win/score limit, then the map is changed. This of course can be done already using players from two different clans that keep things organized, but if the game isn't a scrim but a regular private/public server it'd be a impossible to make it work right no matter how organized the players are. With this mode even the "duel only" clans can scrim, or players that lost a duel can still keep in the server cheering for their team. And these who duel to boost their ego can boost it higher as they'd have the support of their team (they could be like heroes if they are a guaranteed victory!). So, team fun and individual glory/shame.

I had a similar idea called "Team Survivor" for Odamex. 'http://odamex.net/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=737 [^]' |

I like your idea, yet it should require that players can only join the teams at the start of the game, or else players that died could spect/disconect and rejoin their team (lame, but it'd happen on public servers), also new players could join in the middle of the game making the matches endless. Normally is not a problem that players are forced to join only when the map starts, but on this mode I think matches would take some time (unless the frag limit is 10 or 15), and games would end being boring sooner or longer. With my idea, it isn't a problem if a team has 2 players and the other 10 as players are picked at random and can be picked more than once (and the victory is decided by number of wins/scores). Also players can join matches without ruining the game (the only potential exploit I can see are trolls that make stupid things when they have to play, but that's not hard at all to solve if someone has rcon). |

This sounds maybe doable as a mod. ACS could pick a player at random or keep track of who's won/lost/joined late. The "team spectator" entity could perhaps be an invisible, non-blocking playerclass; or make a special map with an "observation room" to which the sitting players are teleported. A_GiveToTarget could probably award virtual frags, or maybe you could only keep track of deaths. |

This sounds like a slower version of 2v2 TDM. I don't see the need for it. |

This should be doable as an ACS mod. If there's something that prevents making this as an ACS mod, the missing feature should be requested instead. The semi-spectator state could be done by having the players be in-game but be invisible, frozen and non-solid. |
