Summary 0003289: Deprecate and remove IRC client
Revision 2017-10-03 20:12 by WubTheCaptain
Additional Information Because "yes".

  • It's feature creep. This is a server browser, damn it!

  • It has bugs: 0003283, 0003284, 0003285, 0003287, ...

  • It's very much "incomplete" in functionality for a 1.0 or 1.1 release of Doomseeker. 0003288, SSL/TLS connections, managing ignore lists, ...

  • It's not very powerful. Eventually people may start requesting more and more features to make it more powerful. Let's not even talk about IRCv3 feature compatibility, which a major portion of large networks and IRCds support these days.

  • I expect people to be using something else already. Be it IRC or something else. IRC – in all its ingenuity – probably has less users and interest with a regular gamer or non-developer than [insert proprietary communication protocol] or Mumble. Developers already probably use something else too, like a dedicated IRC client.

  • Removing or uninstalling unused software is an industry best practice for security.

I'm personally a heavy user of IRC, both Irssi and WeeChat clienst. Though I've been aware of the existence of an IRC client in Doomseeker since 1.0, I've never even opened the panel until today because I found it to be too inconvenient to use from there.
