Summary0003289: Deprecate and remove IRC client
DescriptionDoomseeker includes a small IRC client. I propose it to be deprecated and later removed from Doomseeker.
Additional InformationBecause "yes".

  • It's feature creep. This is a server browser, damn it!

  • It has bugs: 0003283, 0003284, 0003285, 0003287, ...

  • It's very much "incomplete" in functionality for a 1.0 or 1.1 release of Doomseeker. 0003288, SSL/TLS connections, managing ignore lists, ...

  • It's not very powerful. Eventually people may start requesting more and more features to make it more powerful. Let's not even talk about IRCv3 feature compatibility, which a major portion of large networks and IRCds support these days.

  • I expect people to be using something else already. Be it IRC or something else. IRC – in all its ingenuity – probably has less users and interest with a regular gamer or non-developer than [insert proprietary communication protocol] or Mumble. Developers already probably use something else too, like a dedicated IRC client.

  • Removing or uninstalling unused software is an industry best practice for security.

I'm personally a heavy user of IRC, both Irssi and WeeChat clienst. Though I've been aware of the existence of an IRC client in Doomseeker since 1.0, I've never even opened the panel until today because I found it to be too inconvenient to use from there.

I strongly disagree, because "no".

The server browser also contains a WAD downloader, which isn't related to browsing servers but make it easier to get involved with the Zandronum community. The IRC browser also serves this purpose.

One of those is a suggestion. The rest seem to be minor bugs that can be fixed.

It's meant to be a basic client for basic needs. You don't need any of the listed functionality to drop into #zandronum for a quick question.

But they haven't, and the client has been around for a long time.

#zandronum right now has 94 users. 9 of which reported to use the Doomseeker IRC client when I did a channel CTCP VERSION request.

Q: It's feature creep. This is a server browser, damn it!
-No

Q: It has bugs: 0003283, 0003284, 0003285, 0003287, ...
- You decided to post all those bug reports in a single day and even at the same day decided to request devs to delete it? really?
And you didn't even report the alt gr + w that should show "?" but instead it pop up wadseeker ( I think, cant remember now D: )

Q: It's very much "incomplete" in functionality for a 1.0 or 1.1 release of Doomseeker. 0003288, SSL/TLS connections, managing ignore lists, ...
- It's irc, your finger will not break if you have missing emotes or security.

Q: It's not very powerful. Eventually people may start requesting more and more features to make it more powerful. Let's not even talk about IRCv3 feature compatibility, which a major portion of large networks and IRCds support these days.
-I just want a fast way to talk, and it's indeed a fast way to contact with people while you've doomseker opened.

Q:Removing or uninstalling unused software is an industry best practice for security.
- unused software from your point of view or from some obscure data analytics that you have that no other dev has?

The others said everything that needs to be said. Its purpose is to be a quick way to drop in and perhaps introduce people to IRC. The expectation is that power users will graduate to a stand alone client, but for many people it's all they need.

The only thing I can think of to add to this discussion is that our competition also has an IRC client for this purpose and it was a highly requested feature early in development.
