Summary | 0000173: Including freedm iwad with Skulltag and allowing it as an alternative iwad to doom2 for non-coop gamemodes.
Description | I think that Skulltag should include the freedm iwad with its installer package to create a completly "free" game. It should be included with the installer and have the option to install the freedm iwad which is defaulted to yes. Also allow Skulltag to use freedm as an alternative iwad to doom2 for all non-coop gamemodes (everything but coop, survival, and invasion). This would make it easier for people that don't own or know much about Doom to get into the community and start playing. This may also increase the player base as Skulltag could be advertised as a completly "free" game on websites.
Additional Information | If you do not know what the freedm iwad is here is the page:'http://www.nongnu.org/freedoom/index.html [^]' . It is a completly free iwad for doom that includes everything needed for DM based gamemodes.

Standard Freedoom iwad should be used. Freedm does have working monsters but they are tiny black sprites. People could still play like that; so might as well use standard Freedoom. Iwad could be renamed and allowed as a valid iwad in source so doom2.wad wont be mixed up. Maybe stfreedoom.wad. Installer should be almost as normal. But will ask player if they already have Doom installed. If they click No then they be asked to download Iwad. If player manages to install Skulltag without any iwad, they will be informed they are missing iwad upon joining a server and will be asked if want to download or change iwad directory paths. |

Skulltag already asks if you want to download Freedoom and offers you an option to visit one of two sites if it cannot find an IWAD: get Freedoom, or buy Doom 2 on Steam. Adding Freedoom to the installer itself will unnecessarily increase the size of the distribution - not everyone will actually NEED an IWAD to play - some already have their retail copies of Doom 2 - whether legit or not. This is an example of cost vs benefit where there is no real gain. To add to the previous point - including Freedoom will also unnecessarily increase the workload of the person who prepares release archives, as well, because then Freedoom will have to be downloaded to their computer and re-uploaded a multiple number of times depending on how many archives they need to post that need it. This increases preparation time for a release substantially. Also, an included Freedoom IWAD will also become outdated very easily and quickly - this kind of interferes with the Freedoom's authors' abilities to keep it updated to the community as a whole if we offer old versions. Additionally, Freedoom is distributed with drastically different licensing than Skulltag itself - as the Freedoom project cannot directly sponsor ZDoom and its children (which include Skulltag), it makes no sense to include it directly in Skulltag as well. The fact that Skulltag supports it (and even directly recommends it!) should be far more than enough for people to get it on their own, if they want it. For these 5 reasons, I am denying this suggestion. |
