Summary | 0001968: Zandronum Crashes on Startup in Hardware Mode
Description | Zandronum simply won't start up at all. I'm not running any Pwads at all, and the program will run all the code lines, and where it would normally actually start up and go to the main menu, nothing happens. And eventually I get a crash message. Code: C0000005(Access Violation- tried to read address 00000004) Address: 69BF85EC I found out that this happens every time with Hardware Render enabled. GL Compatability Mode does not help this at all. Software Render works, however.
Steps To Reproduce | Just start up Zandronum. Or try to, at least.
Additional Information | I had recently upgraded my Nvidia Geforce 900 series card. An NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GT. 'http://pastebin.com/4xMips4a [^]' This is a pastebin link with my system information on it.

Just going to add onto this and mention that the same thing happens on GZDoom R322, on top of it. |
Edward-san (developer) 2014-10-20 20:41 |
Does it work for you with zandronum 2.0 beta and gzdoom 1.5.2? |
Konar6 (reporter) 2014-10-20 21:42 |
This seems like a problem with your Nvidia drivers. Try upgrading or downgrading them. Another suggestion would be to toggle vertical sync in the Nvidia driver controls. Btw, it looks like you have 4GB of physical memory, but due to the fact that you are using a 32bit operating system, you have only 3GB available. Consider obtaining a 64bit version of the operating system (Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, or even Linux). Oh and I have the same graphics card as you! |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-20 22:01 |
@Edward-san Yes, it works on the Zandronum 2.0 Beta and GZDoom whatever it is i'm using. @Konar6 Actually, upgrading them was when Zan broke in the first place. And...don't go there. I'm stuck on XP due to circumstances out of my control. |
Konar6 (reporter) 2014-10-20 22:09 |
Well, I think that if it works in Zandronum 2.0 (aka by upgrading ZDoom base), it's considered resolved. Just gotta wait for 2.0 release. |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-20 22:17 |
I could make a HL3 joke here. Who knows how long that's going to be. It's not even in beta yet, actually. That's not really the problem being resolved, imo.... |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-21 00:46 edited on: 2014-10-21 00:49 |
The fact is, Zandronum's 2.0 alpha build is buggy. I would very much like to be able to actually USE the stable 1.3 build, rather than wait for heck knows how long for the Zandronum 2.0 release to be out officially. I don't think this issue is closed at all. Refusing to look into the actual problem and just saying to let bygons be bygons does not help things at all. And the software render has more than it's fair share of problems imo. Me having to use the buggy alpha build shouldn't be a permanent fix until 2.0 comes out. Maybe as a stopgap until the fix is put into 1.4, but I can't see that being justified for much else... |

Quote from SilentDarkness12Are these bugs reported yet? If so, please point me to the corresponding tickets. Otherwise, please open new tickets for the bugs you observed. Quote from SilentDarkness12 NVIDIA cards under Windows work fine with Zandronum for many users. I myself have used a Geforce 9800 for years without any problems. So it's quite likely that it's a problem on your system that is causing the crashes. EDIT: Also, nobody shouldn't be using XP anymore for any machines connected to the internet. What is preventing you from switching to a supported system? |

I've encountered at least one bug with the 2.0 alpha, which i'll gladly make a report on later. I'll look into the NVIDIA settings, but something feels off. As for why I haven't moved onto Windows 7, the main issue is purely money. My current machine's setup will NOT be able to handle a 64-bit OS. So, therefore, I need to save up to buy a new machine with 7 on it. But, that is still months and months and months down the line. Unless someone decides to Paypal me $1200 or something like that, it's really....not an answer to my problem. EDIT: Rolling the driver back a couple versions fixed the problem. But, I think this should be noted that the Hardware OpenGL render does not work, on 32-bit systems, with the latest driver update for Nvidia Geforce 9 Series GPUs. I had my Nvidia settings put to default and this remained the case. |

Quote from SilentDarkness12Thanks! Quote from SilentDarkness12I wasn't implying that you need to switch to a newer Windows version, any OS still supported by its developers is fine. There are nice lightweight 32bit Linux distributions that are free and should run on your machine at least as good as XP does. At this moment, XP is a disaster waiting to happen. The question is not if systems connected to the net and still running XP will get compromised, but just when this will happen. Quote from SilentDarkness12Sure it's good to know this. Which is the latest driver version that works for you? And still, nobody should be using XP anymore unless its completely disconnected from the net. |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-21 19:22 edited on: 2014-10-21 19:22 |
@Torr Samaho .....Ugh...no please. I've tried to put up with Linux. It's a curse-word and a half. Everything breaks. The last version of the driver for the Nvidia Geforce 9 Series GPUs that works is: 337.38. Trust me man, I wouldn't be using XP if I still had a valid something to jump to, that wouldn't leave me either bored to tears or pulling my hair out. EDIT: Also, how do I change my avatar? Sorry for off-topic. |
Torr Samaho (administrator) 2014-10-21 19:53 |
Quote from SilentDarkness12I have no idea what you tried, so I cannot comment on this. It's your decision which OS to use anyway. When it's too late, just don't pretend nobody insistently warned you before it was too late. Quote from SilentDarkness12 IIRC the avatar on the tracker can only be changed with Gravatar. Register there with the same email address you use for the tracker and your gravatar should be displayed here. |

Ubuntu, actually. Regardless, i'll have to at least last until I can gather up the money. Oh well. |

Quote from SilentDarkness12 What about Zorin OS? It seems to be the closest linux distribution to have Windows interface. |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-21 23:59 |
...oy....you guys and your shoving of Linux OSes.....i'll look into it. That's all I can say. |
Torr Samaho (administrator) 2014-10-22 06:37 |
I'm not shoving Linux to anyone. My only point is that it's totally irresponsible to continue using XP. The constraint that you can't switch to a newer Window version comes from you, so I pointed out an alternative. Myself, I use mostly Windows 7 on my personal machines, but I know Linux distros well enough to say that they are a viable Windows alternative for most tasks. |
SilentDarkness12 (reporter) 2014-10-22 16:31 |
The problem is that I know at least one application I rely on heavily, called Raidcall, that absolutely does not work on Linux, with or without WINE and PlayonLinux. Apparently, i'm one of those niche people who have tasks that Linux straight up can't handle. Another part of the problem is that i'm borrowing a computer my father is letting me use. Either way, i'll be able to upgrade to 7 in a few months, then this whole thing will be a moot point. Anyways, we're getting off-topic, I think. I think this should probably be added to the readme file for Zandronum or something, if nothing else. |
Watermelon (developer) 2014-10-22 16:39 |
Why not just use software until you get enough money? Also, you can install linux and have an OS selector with GRUB choose your OS at boot (which it installs anyways if you have windows). Best of both worlds, that's what I do. |

If this works in 2.0, then you will have to wait before it is released. Please show more respect when acknowledging the development team next time. |
This issue is already marked as resolved. If you feel that is not the case, please reopen it and explain why. |
