Summary0001458: Add "Afk" flag
DescriptionI don't know if this has been suggested before and I can imagine I'll get my ass flamed off for suggesting it even if it hasn't but I'd like to see a feature that enables a toggle to display "AFK" next to a person's name on a server. The point of this is that people sometimes need to go afk and it would be nice to let other people know that you're afk. When I run a server, depending on what mod and megawad there aren't a lot of people flooding in and I end up playing by myself for a while. While waiting for others to join, sometimes I have to go afk to do various things and if people happen to join the server while I'm away I would like for them to know that I'm afk and not just ignoring them like an asshole. the console command could be simply /afk to turn it off and on. There could even be an option to set a short reason like /afk eating or /afk going to store or whatever. Also, with this I would suggest a configurable auto-toggle that automatically sets a player's status to afk after a set amount of time for the purpose of ready status at the intermission screen. It's bad enough that people are dumb and don't ready up when they are present but then there are players who afk for hours and you have to wait every damn level for the intermission to time out and switch to the next one. It's not a big deal but it would be a nice convenience from my point of view to have a feature like this.

I'm going to guess this is going to be rejected since a game server isn't a chat room. IMO, if you're going to be away from a server from a period of time long enough for someone to think you're just being a jerk, you should probably leave the server and join again when you come back.

You might argue that it would let people know you're interested in playing in an otherwise empty server, but I don't think I'd personally wait around for someone with the afk flag set.

Like I said, this isn't a big deal but on servers like Wrath of Cronos, RGA 2, RGH and any other server where you accumulate rewards over the course of your playtime, leaving and rejoining will pretty much nullify anything you accomplished over the past hours. The functionality I suggested of the auto-toggle would be a bonus for the reasons I have already given. Aside from any difficulty in coding my suggestion I can't see any negative impact in having it implemented. It's not going to change actual gameplay or affect compatibility with mods or maps, I don't know that it would give anyone an advantage or disadvantage in a particular game mode. I don't know... it just seems like this would be a win all around. I can't say that your argument against it has much strength to me, in fact it doesn't really make any clear logical points... more like a personal distaste for it. I can understand if this would require large amounts of time and effort to implement but so far I have not heard anyone say that.

Well the logical reason to disconnect is player slots are limited. Maybe not in the servers that you regular, but sitting afk in a 8 slot server isn't exactly a great idea. ;)

I have no experience with Odamex. As for source ports I have only played Zdoom, Skulltag and Zandronum so I don't get the reference.

Is just changing your name to leave a mention not good enough?

^ this

I see players putting "afk" in their name while waiting for people regularly, works well.

Alright, it's clear to me that everyone hates the idea so I give up.

I honestly don't think this would be useful. Existing method of changing your name to tag yourself as afk works well enough already in cases where this is not undesirable. (do note though, this is quite far away from saying "everybody hates it")
