Doom's 20th anniversary coming up, what should we do to celebrate?

#1

Post by darkstar64 » Mon Oct 14, 2013 1:28 am

December 10, 1993

That's right folks, almost 20 years of Doom and we're still here! Looking back all this time, it's amazing to see what the community has come out with ever since the source code release in 1997 (and even before then), and now we have entire archives of Doom WADs and PK3s, gigabytes of Doom to play and it continues to expand.

So how do we celebrate such an occasion? I remember hearing John Romero was coming to play SNS with us in December (squee!), so having a big server party with the Icon of Sin himself would be a memorable way to celebrate 20 years of Doom. Or how about we all collaborate on something as a thanks to the original id Software team for providing us with such an unforgettable experience?

I've come a long way since this this little guy here. I'm still certain I'm playing Doom 2 in this photo.

Your avatar kinda suggests otherwise...

But on topic, maybe just do what we always do, host some nostaligic wad on FNF / SNS or some shit, there isn't really much else I can think of what hasn't been done already

Code: Select all

I'd like to see a large vanilla deathmatch event on Doom 2 or some very old dm wad on odamex.

Some one get Romero on this. Wasn't he also gonna be part of a FNF event?

Yes.

It's about time for someone to remind him.
The Ranger - New class for HeXen.
ZDoom Wars - I drew some pictures.
Samsara - Some class-based mod I guess?
Metroid: Dreadnought - I am a dumb fanboy.

Twenty years already. Time sure likes to fly, especially when you're slaying endless hordes of hellspawn.

Even though i started my doom chidhood in 2003, 10 years is a big celebration for me too.

Just an idea, but maybe a large 20th anniversary community coop/survival project? It'd be a great way to celebrate the 20 year milestone, and would bring more attention to Zandronum.

Or just a 32 player supported doom playthrough through all the levels, probably with multiple servers

That´s also the goal of the ZDCMP2 (if it keeps delaying on time).
I dont care about how bad your maps are. Everything can be improved.

There was a map that contained all of Doom2s maps in one giant long epic map. Problem is, some teleports and doors to the next maps are singleplayer only. If anyone can fix it, we could host that. Maybe even combine Doom1 maps in there. I can't think of where to get the wad though, been a while and i did not save it.

Someoneelse should have it. I got it from her.

Idea: Gather 1 or 2 well-made maps from dozens of popular/well made survival wads e(ie HR2, Hellbound, Deus Vult II, Memento Mori, etc.) then compile them into one large megawad.

I believe that would be illegal and just plain rude

Why bother ripping if playing the actual wad is fine too?

Because you would have the very best maps packed together. But yes: it's too much of a hassel than just loading some fancy megawad and enjoy it as it is.

It's memorial.wad (it's on best-ever).
Some maps are slightly modified to fit one-map format.
The problem is, it's not good for coops, it will bug when people will die as areas close etc. Someone would have to fix it.
Shared keys will now be in Zandro! Thanks devs for their work, and users for the support!

Why not UltimateUltimateDoom?
It makes it so you can play doom 1's maps and doom 2's without needing to change the IWAD, to extend the maps even further, it's also compatible with FreeDoom Maps as well. So it makes for a nice long Co-op Survival campaign. (EDIT: you need doom.wad as a PWAD for this to work.)
