Yeah um just so you know, the double shotgun ammo usage is double that of normal gameplay. Turns out you could get away with it in Doom, but in Heretic and Hexen (Hexen by far), you suffered VERY HEAVILY for this. It's actually 1 shell per shot (64 damage per shell in coop, 56 in DM).

But seriously, you fail to disappoint here. Ranger makes an excellent addition to Samsara, and I like the concept of Artillery role.

Ranger is completely outclassed on DM games, but so fun for co-op.

Not sure on exact stats, but they have a very tight spread and didn't kill much, so I assume pretty meager power as they are designed for long range. I was too busy being killed in a claustrophobic DM map where only rockets got me kills.

except Ranger's rockets go a good 20 units/tic faster, making them much better suited for long range - Duke is purely spam, while a ranger that can lead targets is a very deadly combatant (I can dodge duke rockets with ease - not so much ranger rockets)

plus the whole quad thing turns all of his weapons into slaughterhouses. and lava nails pack one damn strong punch

edit: and yes my main reason for ranger in DM is because his emphasis on rocketry and leading is IMO a much more effective weapon than duke's emphasis on rocketry and spamming

btw, parias vs ranger? parias wins because of that explosive resistance + quartz flasks

It's kind of annoying how in coop/survival when you get his grenade launcher, there is no ammo anywhere.

I can't choose Ranger from the single player menu, I have to use Random to use him. I'm guessing this is because of the way the characters selection menu is set up in Zandronum?

yeah that's why you get the 15 or so grenades right off the bat - so you can get at least SOME use out of the damn thing

yeah gzdoom goes into a less fancy menu where you can actually see all the classes when it goes over 7 playerclasses

  • Have shells give 1 rocket, and shell boxes give 5 rockets. Cluster rockets would not be given from this.
  • Have rocket pickups give Ranger, say, double ammo. Cluster rockets might be affected by this - I'm undecided.
  • (Term's suggestion) Have the Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher give an arseload of rockets on pickup.
I hope that either option 1 or a combination of options 2 and 3 (what Ranger got, apparently) are considered for the other heroes with mismatched weapon/typical ammo types (Duke's and SO's weapon IIIs). They suffer from much the same problem Catastrophe pointed out concerning Ranger.

Getting an assload of rockets on GL/RL pickup would work well with Ranger's Artillery role (hell you already get 15 grenades with the GL and the shotguns can be effective in the right hands), but Ranger is pretty effective as he is imo.

Also, to play as Ranger in SP, open the console and type:

playerclass ranger; skill y; map mapxx or ezmx (for any of you derps out there that haven't figured that out. skill y is any number between 0 and 4 which goes from ITYTD to Nightmare, mapxx is the map you want to warp to, ezmx is where z represents episode umber and x is level number).

Also, one of the quotes from Ranger's bot is in my signature, since it really struck me.

The reason Ranger's shotguns do the damage they do is because they fire so much faster (his Double Shotgun fires faster than Doomguy's pump shotgun), have pretty tight spread and only one of them uses ammo. They're more focused on DPS than burst damage, unlike everyone else's shotguns. A bonus is they stunlock monsters very well.

His "SSG" is his Rocket Launcher, which I find to be an extremely reliable weapon for any scenario: like like Doom's SSG.

yeah the fact that ranger's shotgun deals 24 damage per shot is REALLY pushing it in terms of starting weapons, and the DSG isn't terribly buffed because close range is not the main focus of ranger - besides, nothing else is using those shells, he gets effectively double firepower from clips (via lava nails), and he gets 5 and 10 rockets from ammo 3 pickups

yeah by the time the 6 less average damage than the normal shotgun really comes into play, you're rolling in rockets and multi-rockets and have a bunch of lava nails to show that archvile who's boss

if anything, quackgui should be getting LESS ammo due to the fact that he gets double damage output from clips and ridiculously more rockets than everyone else


still don't know what to do with cells and early-game grenade launcher, though - both of ranger's cell weapons are gotten through pickups that boost melee, a category not really paid much attention
ranger's being able to use cells depends entirely on whether there were sections where tyson play was encouraged, and the decent chance of not being able to use cells at all still annoys me
