Even though most people seem rather pessimistic about the current mm8bdm invasion, this shouldn't be the case.
At this moment they are completely isolated from the rest of the community. Using 98e and the internal server browser, chances of them ever discovering the other side of skulltag are pretty slim. This influx won't last forever and it would be stupid to let a potential new playerbase go to waste. Mm8bdm is afterall, a part and represents what zandronum is all about. Zandronum is stable enough as it is atm, endless stalling of its release is anything but favorable (No offense Torr, the amount of effort you keep putting into it is incredible). We could close the skulltag chapter, new players wouldn't be endlessy confused about this: st/zan what is what thing. If cutman would then release mm8bdm with zandronum and doomseeker, perhaps seeing all those mods and gamemodes this port has to offer can tempt them to try out all the other stuff. Instead of svering connections with this part of the community, as many of you seem eager to do, why not lure them to our side with delicious treats. Letting this slip by would be stupid. |

We should make people feel welcome rather than assuming they're going to be bad.

Should start by advertising servers to get bigger games on, big servers draw crowds.

Remember that part of the reason for separating (then) Skulltag and MM8BDM in the first place is that we are the dumb noobs who will drive away new players.
Also as far as mods go, MM8BDM is pretty good. Ragnarok Deathmatch |

But wait, don't they have to actually BUY Doom2 in order to "join" the rest of us? Not sure if most of them would be willing to make that leap. And no, Freedoom doesn't cut it. IIRC, if you download the Freedoom IWAD, you still can't play on most ST/Zan servers because the checksums are obviously different.

XD I counted all the MM8BDM players that I saw at 9:20 pm CDT in about 3 minutes, with such a huge amount of MM8BDM players I bet if zandronum supported up to 128 players, they would easily fill one server... or more in the future (of course the "I bet if..." is only an hypothetical scenario ;) ). |

It's a double edged sword; we may get people who are respectful and maybe at the same time skilled players, but there could be players that embody what we don't want in Zandrotag

I agree with what Frits said, but they'd have to actually go buy/"obtain" Doom 2. I'm sure most of them are more or less just there for Megaman, and trying to join another server out of passing curiosity being met with "You need to buy this game" is probably not going to help.
I'm fairly certain they aren't willing to track down and buy a game they didn't even know existed, so anything that requires Doom will likely just be met with a passing glance.

Oh you're unskilled, you never play doom so stay away from zandronum. I didn't know we were an elitist port. And this doomsday talk about all those new players being trolls and annoying bastards is just too silly. Not giving this a chance would be the real unwise thing to do. Everyone has to start somewhere. |

Exactly, like you know because there aren't a lot of "pro" players who are already "trolls and annoying bastards." That comes with the territory. |

Of course Freedoom users won't be able do play the maps that are in the Doom IWADs, but that shouldn't be a problem. |

While this important, it is only a part of what i am trying to suggest. In short: Release zandronum now, while the influx of new players is at it greatest. Cutman seems prepared to do a zandronum release: http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?...56#p186048 (all he has to do is include doomseeker as well) New bugs will always keep popping up, but using this playerbase to our advantage is a once in port lifetime opportunity (hence the thread title). Plus ending the confusion i cause when i try to convince players to use zandronum for online play. Not to mention new players that come here without any information. This current intermediate state is doing nobody any good. |
