Are you a fan of tracker music?

#1

Post by Zeberpal » Mon Jul 09, 2012 10:43 am

As title says, are you?

I never knew about this format of music before Skulltag. When playing various wads I noticed there was a music in some which doesn't sound like usual MIDI or MP3. That's when I found it and loved that kind of music ever since. I regularly visit Modarchive to deliver a joy to my ears.
So the point of this thread to know your own opinion about tracker music and share stuff you heard and found it awesome! Or maybe you're coding your own modules?

Don't be lazy and share you preferences, I'll start first ;)

Tracked music is ancient.

XMPlay is a media player that supports a lot of tracked formats, as well as modern ones.
Foobar2000 is pretty good about supporting various formats as well. (I use this, as well as keep an old copy of Winamp 2.95 around)

Also, how could you forget Aryx?!

ModArchive has a lot of tracked music, but for the times it's missing something I usually check places like the Amiga Music Preservation site, and Aminet has tracked stuff that sometimes isn't on the other archives, and the classic Chiptune.com has tracked music and all kinds of other retro music formats that are classics.

Other archives of retro music formats include Plopbox(enable Java on the page to see/hear the cool player plugin), and Scene.org.

Nectarine radio also plays tracked music a lot.

I've also made a few tracked tunes. I used to make music in Impulse Tracker years ago, but I've since lost of much of my work over the years. Always back up your work.

Does that answer your question?

It does a lot! It seems you know demoscene era well. And so yeah I made this thread to link some good music here from various people.

Oh, never ever heard this one D: I have to admit I commonly listen to the ones from doom.

Winamp also has full support for tracker playing.
There is also Modplug Player.
Modplug Player is a free powerful tracker/midi editor.
I have known about these formats for quite some time. They are used exclusively in the Unreal Engine 1 Games.
I found out by trying to find some extractors for them, then being surprised the strange formats played with Winamp.

ModPlug Tracker is probably the most powerful and easy to use free tracker I've ever used. I have no clue how I got by with Impulse Tracker, or how people manage to throw things together with Schism Tracker.
ModPlug Tracker is still maintained in the form of OpenMPT, based on the opensource code.
I've used other good trackers like Renoise and Jeskola Buzz, but those don't save retro formats like .mod .s3m etc, and Renoise is commercial.

ModPlug Player however requires a disclaimer, it doesn't support all the tracked formats properly/fully, BUT it does support ModPlug Tracker's proprietary .it version(made in ModPlug Tracker), so if you have the somewhat "rare" tracks that used to be on ModPlug back when they had music on them, they will play almost perfectly in it, sans some VSTi effects/instruments. I can't confirm the compatibility with the other formats, but I know it didn't do .xm very well for quite a few tracks, but it does support songs within zip/rar archives. XMPlay or Foobar2k can do everything that ModPlug Player can't do, and Foobar2k has plugins for zip/rar/lha/etc archives as well.

Another player is DeliPlayer, the "swiss army knife" of Amiga scene music players, but it was a commercial product at one point so any download is of a demo/shareware version with only basic playlist features, and it has trouble working on some computers(on Windows Vista/7 you have to use the XP compatibility mode for instance).
The only thing DeliPlayer is worth keeping around for is the decent emulation of assorted Amiga music and other retro formats. There may still be downloads floating around the net, if anyone wants to look for it, the last release version was a 2.50 beta. I'll put a link here later when I find my installer.
DeliPlayer 2.50 public beta 1 (dp250pb1.exe)

I use XMPlay over DeliPlayer nowadays for general use though, also XMPlay has a WAD plugin(!) and .sf2 soundfont support for .mid music(!!) (Foobar2k does too with its midi plugin and also supports midi compatible VSTi plugins, but some may like the customization that XMPlay's soundfont manager has, you can mix and match soundfonts per instrument or per soundbank(use instruments from soundfont A and different drums from soundfont B for example))

I'd say the holy trinity of demoscene compatible media players seems to be XMPlay, Foobar2000, and Winamp(versions 2.95 or the newer AOL ones, most Winamp2 plugins work in newer Winamp versions IIRC, but I keep both 2 and a newer version around just to be safe)

Plugins & components:
Here's a page of official Foobar2k plugins/components: http://kode54.foobar2000.org/
and a list of community components: http://www.foobar2000.org/components (this is a large list, only download what you need, many are experimental and might slow down your pc or something, though newer versions of foobar have been better about this)
Winamp 2 and up plugins: http://www.winamp.com/plugin/ (any plugin from back in 2000-2002 or earlier is for Winamp 2, anything newer is usually for the newer Winamp versions)

I love trackers. I use them often in my maps because they can set the perfect mood much better than midi (usually).
Reinforcements: midgame Survival joining/respawning
Doom64: Unabsolved: Doom64 + Diablo II
ZandroSkins: a pack made by our community
AeniPuffs: 3D blood and bullet puff effects, free to use for your own mods
Squad Radio: a WASD-based radio chat menu, add your own custom sounds!
Mercenaries (on hold)

Prospekt wrote: Hell yeah! I remember reading a lot about LAN's back in the 90's where they would arrange tracker competitions. You would have like a certain amount of time to create music and then they would pick the winner with the best track.

One track that I will always remember and love especially is Damac & Swallow - Butterfly Flew Away which I (of course..) discovered in a DOOM wad. This track gets going in about 0:47.

This kind of music always reminds me of long gone days. Nostalgia at it's finest.
Oh yeah that one is great! As for doom wad it was used in ddmset.wad, very polular duel wad back in 2005-07 years. Wellp, it seems that people forgot/never played these good wads cause of D32.

I remember that song being used in some Unreal Tournament maps.

Wow dude, I have been wondering what the TLSXCTF1 map05 song came from for all 6 years I've been playing doom, I never thought I'd actually find out someday, thanks for the info!

I agree that the songs are great though, they could be a decent alternative when you can't seem to find the right midi.

MOD/Module music is the godfather of tracked music, no problems there!

Also I noticed people linking Butterfly Flew Away and mentioning Dream DM, the version of the song used there is actually a remix. It can be found here: http://modarchive.org/index.php?request ... uery=58844
