DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
RE: DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
Well, they could torrent the clips, but I think that's an overkill for a game preview.

RE: DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
Welp, the big announcement is at 7 PM EST.
EDIT: Based on tweets, looks like we'll be getting what is essentially a next-gen Brutal Doom, with shades of Doom 3 and Doom 64.

- Fast-paced combat against multiple enemies at once - Doom 3 this ain't.
- Set outside a massive UAC research facility on Mars as it's being invaded by the forces of Hell.
- Hellknights, cyberdemons, revenants, mancubii, and other classic monsters were spotted throughout the demo.
- Classic Doom weapons, including the fan-favorite double-barrell shotgun return. Plasma rifle, rocket launcher, and the good old chainsaw were also shown off.
- Go fast. "Doom is not about about taking cover" said executive producer Marty Stratton.
- Doom is powered by IdTech 6, and will be for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. They are "committed" to 1080P at 60 frames-per-second.
- Wonderfully gory close range executions, including special ones for dropping down on enemies from above.
- Revenants now have jetpacks and can hover about while firing rockets at you.
- At least one weapon, the combat shotgun, has an alternate fire mode, which allows you to charge up and release multiple shells in rapid succession.
- Sprinting, double-jumping and mantling are all possible, making for very fluid motion during combat.
- Enemies can teleport in for old-school style ambushes
- Dying results in a crazy fatality scene depending on what killed you a la Dead Space. Revenants rip your arms off and punch straight through your combat helment.
- Old school mechanics. No reloading your clip, hold as many weapons as you want, health and ammo pick-ups etc. NO REGENERATING HEALTH.

Well figures, it's a Brutal Doom in a modern engine, with Doom 64-like monsters. Sounds like nothing impressive, as I had a gut feeling about sadly.

Yes I did, and it had these key points:
the player was able to perform 'finishing moves' on enemies, mostly Imps, which involve head stomping, limb tearing, innard gouging, and probably four or five beautiful executions with the chainsaw, during a segment where he tore through a line of Imps. Shotgun and double barreled shotgun could blow chunks off enemies, and in one case, blew an Imp right in half.
Speaking of atmosphere, it seems like they're going with a mix of soundtrack and ambient industrial soundscapes here. A bit reminiscent of Doom 64.
The one Mancubus that was shown had some interesting armor and was huge. It had a nice meaty sense of weight to it. It resembled Doom 64's version slightly.
even though it resembles Doom 3 in terms of visuals.
I forgot to add it had similarites to Doom 3.

Sure, but why would you pick out all of those key points and skip the rest that suggest other things. For instance, from an article posted earlier:Suicide Slim wrote:Hypnotoad wrote:

"Fast-paced combat against multiple enemies at once - Doom 3 this ain't."
"Old school mechanics. No reloading your clip, hold as many weapons as you want, health and ammo pick-ups etc. NO REGENERATING HEALTH."
And then from the feedback:
"[the two maps shown] resemble Doom 3, but are much more expansive, open and busy."
"As for comparisons to Brutal Doom, the blood and gore is very extreme, but appropriate within the context of the combat. The melee attacks never slow down gameplay and happen within the POV in the span of a couple of seconds."
"I NEVER see a game with this type of visual realism where the player can move and maneuver at this speed. "
"Make no mistake: the fast guy from the id Tech 1 games is back, except his freedom of movement is closer to Quake 3 Arena... The enemies are faster too, but the player is faster still."

I was only taking the key points that reflected my comment. Also the rest sounds decent, and the no health regen (this I do like). Might get my interest.

Glad to read "The enemies are faster too". It bothers me how most enemies are too slow in the original games, compared to Wolf3D.
Why is finding the user CP so hard?

Ah... So you think the lag is your ally... You merely adopted the lag, I was BORN in it! MOLDED by it! I didn't have a stable internet connection until I was a man, and by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

RE: DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
Doom was originally a corridor shooter, so being outside on huge plains of Mars is just different than what it used to be. It's not bad, it's just different.Catastrophe wrote:And your point is...?SpaceMarine wrote:IGN wrote: Set outside a massive UAC research facility on Mars as it's being invadedIGN wrote: outside

One way or another, after reading the writeups, my imagination is zooming on this one. I'm really stoked, but on the other hand, if this suffers from DNF syndrome, it'll likely spell the end of iD Software in general.
EDIT: At least from where I sit.

After seven years, my blasphemous abortion is finally put in the ground.
RE: DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
wow seriously?They are "committed" to 1080P at 60 frames-per-second.

Technical innovation. The 8th world wonder happened !
Mentioning that sounds legit for a 1997 game, but 2014? thats sad xD That should be pretty basic.
In top of that - wtf?
I want 2560x1600 and more than only 60fps.
This cant be such of a problem for a 2014 game.
But the rest of the list gives a lot of hope into the game :)
And the best: NO AUTOHEAL !!!!!
RE: DOOM 4 Discussion Thread
Am I allowed to ask what kind of crack you're smoking to think that 1080p at 60fps was even near possible in '97?De-M-oN wrote:wow seriously? They are "committed" to 1080P at 60 frames-per-second.
