So I've started working in collaboration with Ivan on a Death-Match wad, and I thought it would be best to ask you, the community what you all like in a DM wad. What is it that brings you back? The maps? the Large client connection? I want to do my best so I can cater to everyone's needs.

I'd say really the thing that works for me is the maps. If they have nice detail, tricky ways to get the more powerful weapons and big maps. Also I think that the player limit shouldn't be too big or too small but should be decided through the maps size. EDIT: Oh I didn't see the poll, before I forget personally I like mix and match sort of maps as I think it's better to have a mix than to be seeing the same thing repeated in a different way if that makes sense. These are my preferences however.

Good layouts (flow counts!), a mix of weapons (get creative!), high playercount support (I'd rather see 20 on a map and it not be a clusterfuck), and you can't really force it to only be oldschool or newschool. It should be able to be played with either setting.

Of course a decent clients amount is important for easy and enjoyable games. It depends on the map anyway; having 20 players on a cramped map is terribad.
I also prefer playing on maps with a mixture of old and new weapons and so having some intriguing matches.

Maps designed to expand based on the amount of currently playing players could be nice, but the player starts would possibly have to be done via ACS and Map Markers.
Anyway, I do like maps with good flow regardless of the theme really.

Has to be old weapons really, tbh if there's an SSG on a map that's all I'll be using. I believe the uni doom maps are the perfect dm maps.

Wide open areas or at least not too clostrophbic. Fuck hallway deathmatches unless the hallways are large.
SSG off the bat. I like it when they throw in a map or two where you don't get it off the bat to mix shit up a bit.
Gotta hae that skullag chaingun. The other chaingun just does not cut it.
Dark earthy textures and colors like greenwar.

Old weapons, but its okay if you throw in a new power-up or two from Skulltag IMO.
But most importantly, I think that good layouts that have a nice height variation and creativity are really important to a duel map, seeing as the layout influences the whole match 500000000000%
PS. Nice height variation does not mean HURR DURR MAP SO TALL CAN'T SEE MY ENEMY IN OS SETTINGS, yes I am raging over that map.

I do like some new weapons, but not too many. Look at Cybercrime3.wad for example. It adds a railgun and beefs up the chaingun and rocket launcher and is still really really fun.

Also the main thing I like in DM, especially map packs/DM MegaWADs, is variety, not all the same kinds of maps but different themes, different layouts - from strategic layouts that allow camping, ambushing, and other tactics to small, basic arena maps that are all about skill with a particular weapon (the third map in my current DM WAD project is basically a circular arena where the only weapons allowed are Fist/Berserk, Chainsaw, and Pistol, for example, while map06 is a metal-plated cornucopia of chaos, even with bots!).
