Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Call of Duty vs DOOM"
RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
While I can't commit myself for a video (afraid of letting you down), I really wish to see the final product. This seems to be something very interesting and deep, something which is more than just another video about videogames.

in all what games are going to be talked about? just Doom/Doom2 and the CoD series? will other first person shooters be involved?

RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
There are references to other games to show why the point is relevant over a span of time.
For example, Doom shareware had a full episode with multiplayer deathmatch and cooperative, demo recording, and a bunch of commandline settings. Shareware was a common practice back then; developers allowing a sizable portion of their work to be shared without copyright infrtingement to entice consumers into purchasing their game, and also allowing the consumer to share the sample themselves having a saturating viral effect.
The shareware standard was tossed out in favor of limited-time, limited-access, and limited content alphas and betas, which often involve purchasing a full-price game or pre-ordering to get a beta key. EA did it with Battlefiekd/Medal of Honor, Activision barely if ever even have samples, and Bethesda have made it so one must purchase Wolfenstein: The New Order for what appears to be limited access to a beta of Doom, not an unlimited-time shareware sample of a finished product, though whether or not BethesIDa will back down from that, who knows. I'm still laughing inside at when they tried to work Doom 3 off Steam on the launch of BFG Edition.
Unreal Tournament, Half-Life, Duke Nukem, Quake- some random examples of gameplay samples that actually mean something. When discussing points about old standard vs new, I will be referencing a lot of other games as examples on each side, but the real face off is between Doom and Call of Duty.

You know the older games are less played because a lot care for graphics and stuff like doom are older than the players themselves to remember them?

I'm afraid of derailiring the topic but I'm not convinced about what you say. While it is true that some people like shiney graphics and such, I'd like to point out how Steam keeps adding old games with outdated graphics to its catalogue, also worth to mention the success of Minecraft, which can have anything innovative but the graphic.Cruduxy wrote: You know the older games are less played because a lot care for graphics and stuff like doom are older than the players themselves to remember them?

Hey, if you want an in-between for super-cover-squad-tacticool and super-classic-run-dodge-shoot for da bideo, you could try Oneshot. Realistic and Hideous (3x damage done, 10x damage taken) difficulties are tacticool as fuck, or you could go Serious Sam with the Doubler or similar difficulty! It's pretty fun, and might be useful for BIDEO.

You could also come with examples of good games from this time, just to not make it look like a one sided rant. If there is something that I learn in my langual classes is not to be onesided in your debate on a topic.

Nothing shameful about this. I will gladly try any contribution from the modding community, and quite likely it will be featured. Thank you for your contribution!Ijon Tichy wrote: Hey, if you want an in-between for super-cover-squad-tacticool and super-classic-run-dodge-shoot for da bideo, you could try Oneshot. Update: I tried OneShot and I like it. The idea of giving number-based manual control to the player is valuable, because it allows them to use it for more purposes.
For example, Gamble + Doubler is sort of like mini-crits from Team Fortress 2, whereas Gamble + Fragility is a bit more like DnD rolling.
I do have a lot of examples of great games from this time. Bioshock, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Metro 2033 are just a few. I especially want to focus on the Indie industry, for an aspect like this.Lollipop wrote: You could also come with examples of good games from this time, just to not make it look like a one sided rant. This is a breakdown of elements, mixed with games from both the past and the present that apply them. Certainly not all FPS of this time are awful, and I would never make that claim, but even the best FPS games of today are missing some of the most important characteristics of FPS in the past.
And, having ironed out the second revision and actually looked at a visual representation of the comparisons, I would be in disbelief if I wasn't so used to corporations shagging people.

Except for most people FPS is a genre about graphics and shooting stuff with 60 rifles that look cool in action and only differ in some number tweaks. And its not like the old games they add sell even 10% as those AAA fps games :|Luke wrote:I'm afraid of derailiring the topic but I'm not convinced about what you say. RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
If people realized they were buying Hollywood movies with minor FPS elements every year for the same cost (sometimes more) than a revolutionary game that spawned an entire genre (if not two genres), they might not be so inclined to purchase future installments. The right points and the right illustration of these points can convince even the most quality-blind of gamers.Cruduxy wrote:Except for most people FPS is a genre about graphics and shooting stuff with 60 rifles that look cool in action and only differ in some number tweaks. It's not impossible. It just has to be done right.
The videos will just be natural gameplay, with very few scripted scenes. If you'd like to be informed of when a session is, I'd be glad to have you. There is very little expected on behalf of our visitors; just playing and having a good time.Luke wrote: While I can't commit myself for a video (afraid of letting you down), I really wish to see the final product. And I appreciate your anticipation of the video! It's good moral support.

I'm not able to participate but best of luck to you
I'd personally recommend having part of the video be without weapon mods, featuring a map pack like the very unique looking mod UAC Ultra (has good gameplay too) http://doomwiki.org/wiki/UAC_Ultra
I've never really seen anything like its theme in a FPS game, it's sort of like a high contrast Quake.
Alternatively you might want to check out Scythe 2,
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... cythe2.zip
which is a long and great adventure through varied environments and themes
Or perhaps, Epic 2, which is an egyptian themed mod
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... /epic2.zip
Also, I'd recommend Greenwar (1) Deathmatch for DM; it's old and plain but it's a great time, easy to pick up, and holds up well with a large or small amount of players.

@jwaffe
The PC segment is an attempt to capture all of what makes modding great, and the WADs/PK#s are sorted in such a manner that I generally know what's compatible with what- mod compatibility is a big theme for that section, contrasting the difference between weapon mods, map packs, skin packs, sound packs, graphic packs, etc. There's a lot accounted for, and I think it's a very convincing perspective.
Some of those mods I have, the rest I've just grabbed for my WAD collection for a brief play-through soon. I appreciate your suggestions, thank you!

I've seen all three of the Call of Dooty series before, and I've been thinking of adding some clips of each with links to the video in annotation. But, I think the strongest CoD parody is Duty Calls.

Definitely slipping some of this in there.

I look forward to this video. I might hop on the server if I see it in DooM Seeker or IDE to help out with the gameplay footage just for the heck of it.
Best of luck on this, good sir!

I think I'll be helping in making this as a player, I might not be active for most of the time, just tell me the time and date, and I'll see whether I can join in or not.

Why do you want to use wads unusable on pre-sourceport doom? Seems to diffuse your point a bit imo.

I'm fine for any of the survival footage (and maybe dm), AS LONG AS you give me notice in advance, to see if I can or can't make it.
Most of my available times are on Weekends, so that's the best time for me.

we can only try, but this also the same thing with kids in my school, they asked me what game was better, doom or cod, i said doom but then they say but the graphics sucks in that game. The graphics and not bad, the reason why doom is in its 20th year is because of us modding it either we make doom realistic with some specs or make a game using the doom engine to do something that was never before seen, thats why most kids dont even care about the gameplay, all they want is graphics now and days and i really do feel pitty, even the computer nerds at my school say that doom is bad, but they even said that doom dosent support opengl witch is false cause it does, but we need to put these cod people in there place and why doom started it all, without doom, no cod
would games like, painkiller, borderlands would be in this vid, also i want inSupplesnap wrote: There are references to other games to show why the point is relevant over a span of time.

Original Doom without high-level modding is Segment I, Doom vs Call of Duty.one_Two wrote: Why do you want to use wads unusable on pre-sourceport doom? Seems to diffuse your point a bit imo.
Enhanced Doom including source-ports and mods are in Segment II, Designing for PC vs Designing for Console, to show what sharing with the consumer can accomplish.
Thanks for your input!
A ton of games will be briefly mentioned, but the extent to which I discuss them varies from game to game. Painkiller and Borderlands might as well be mentioned, really. I'll add them.ryupichu suszuki wrote: would games like, painkiller, borderlands would be in this vid, also i want in
