Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Call of Duty vs DOOM"
About the Video
I, like many other gamers, feel that Doom is constantly patronized by modern gamers for some of the worst reasons, primarily graphics-related. After close analysis and comparison, I feel there's a lot to express about modern standards of the FPS industry compared to the 90's, but the difference is too large to easily summarize, and frankly difficult to convey to gamers who can't see beyond high-res textures and marketing. Many would dismiss these arguments as those of a no-lifer or troll, or drown them out with logical fallacies and some classic one-sided shouting (Bill 'O' Reilly-style).
In the video, both franchises are broken down into basic elements, and compared in each category of design. The value of Doom as a product released back in 1993 will be compared to Call of Duty as a product released in modern times. By the end of the video, conclusions will be drawn about which direction the FPS industry was taken, and how it got there. The benefits of the PC platform as well as the amazing modding community have been accounted for. I'd like to emphasize also, that the tone will not be a mockery of consumers, but rather an exposition of the gaming industry.
This video is completely for educational purposes. It is non-profit, unmonetized, and will not have any advertisements.
What we have:
- Script Currently 40k words with a ton of headings/subjects (For a sense of scale, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is about 46k words)
- Half a dozen mostly-active contributors
- A lot of singleplayer footage
Want to get involved?
We need Doomers for multiplayer footage, to be recorded in planned sessions. We have sessions planned for multiple gamemodes, three playerlimits (approximately 4, 8, and 16), and mod footage (Brutal Doom, Hideous Destructor, Realistic Weapons, Samsara, and ScoreDoom).
If you would like to participate, feel free to PM me or post. We have pre-configured source-ports and batch files for anyone who would like to join, but you must have your own official IWAD files for The Ultimate Doom and Doom II.
Feel free to share your thoughts below, but please don't flame or fight. Also, don't naysay without a viable argument. After articulating the differences between two games for tens of thousands of words, I'm not inclined to tolerate points like "Doom is too old, has bad graphics, barely has any weapons."

I'm definitely down to help. I'm available to record, offer a modder's perspective, act as an extra, host server, host video, or whatever is needed.

The Ranger - New class for HeXen.
ZDoom Wars - I drew some pictures.
Samsara - Some class-based mod I guess?
Metroid: Dreadnought - I am a dumb fanboy.
DemonSteele - ~come with me to anime world~

There's really nothing you can do to convince a COD kid to play Doom except show them RGA2 or Brutal Doom. And then they'll play nothing but that.
Reinforcements: midgame Survival joining/respawning
Doom64: Unabsolved: Doom64 + Diablo II
ZandroSkins: a pack made by our community
AeniPuffs: 3D blood and bullet puff effects, free to use for your own mods
Squad Radio: a WASD-based radio chat menu, add your own custom sounds!
Mercenaries (on hold)

If you want to defend Doom vs modern games like black ops and whatnot and the players that come from them and insult Doom, you shouldn't really use mods designed to modernize Doom to make your point. Samsara is a good one though.

I disagree. I think well-illustrated points can convince a ton of loyal CoD players to turn 180 degrees and play something more like Doom, and I firmly believe just the first segment of the video will be more than enough for a lot of gamers. But I agree, Brutal Doom is a focal point. Can barely pull myself away from it..Ænima wrote: There's really nothing you can do to convince a COD kid to play Doom except show them RGA2 or Brutal Doom. The PC design segment is really more about how developers like id (and Valve) benefit from allowing creativity to flow from their consumer-base. I see nothing wrong with being able to modernize Doom as an optional feature, or showing viewers that CoD can be partially replicated in Doom without dragging along linear level-design and lack of true campaign cooperative.Ted wrote: If you want to defend Doom vs modern games like black ops and whatnot and the players that come from them and insult Doom, you shouldn't really use mods designed to modernize Doom to make your point. Ah, I see what you mean. So you're trying to promote Doom through how flexible the modding can be, with different maps and guns and etc that people have come up with, expressing their creativeness through coding and other modding factors, and how this outweighs the 'fun' people experience in games like COD, where you just HAVE to buy every 'new' map pack that comes along because it's new and pretty looking and the developers needed a new Ferrari for their 16 year old drug induced teen because they crashed it into someone else's rear end.Supplesnap wrote:The PC design segment is really more about how developers like id (and Valve) benefit from allowing creativity to flow from their consumer-base. Partially through how flexible it is, which is segment two. Segment one is directly Doom vs Call of Duty before any modding capability. A lot of points you've made here are accounted for, and I'm glad you appreciate them.Ted wrote:Ah, I see what you mean. Good luck making that point. I'd say start with facts, they're irrefutable.

RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
So you want some cod players to play doom by writing them a cute, long story and making them listen to some debate about the evolution of the video game industry or some stuff? You need to be a little more concise, this isn't a text-based rpg.

RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
It's a lot more than that. I want people to acknowledge the difference between good and bad business and design practices. If I just wanted people to play Doom, the script wouldn't be so long.Combinebobnt wrote: So you want some cod players to play doom
There's a lot more to this script and video than a "cute story and a debate about the evolution of the FPS genre." I'm a little insulted.Combinebobnt wrote:by writing them a cute, long story and making them listen to some debate about the evolution of the video game industry or some stuff?
Where am I not being concise? If you have questions, feel free to ask them, but please don't jump in naysaying with a strawman logical fallacy and assumptions.Combinebobnt wrote:You need to be a little more concise, this isn't a text-based rpg.

Out of interest, can we get any background on you? Are you actively involved in game design at an amateur or professional level?

I'd prefer to let the work speak for itself when the time comes to upload.Hypnotoad wrote: Out of interest, can we get any background on you? Are you actively involved in game design at an amateur or professional level?
My objective is an infallible argument on every front, and if I don't achieve that, I'm sure the rating bar will tip in favor of public dislike and people can draw conclusions about me then.
Frankly, I'm not even sure what professional means in 2014.
But feel free to message me if you'd like a general synopsis of the script.

I'd love to help if I can. Hit me up on steam/skypu or something.
RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
Since Doom has a large variety of mods, couldn't we include Call of Duty: World at War. It's probably the only CoD where there are a lot of custom maps. Mainly it goes towards Nazi Zombies though with nice mapping, to heavily modded maps with extreme mapping.

World at War, CoD2, and CoD4, each featured a development kit and map editor, significantly less stream-lining, and all have an impressive amount of user-generated content, but unfortunately Activision/Treyarch have backed off from the concept of user content, and hopped right on-board the paid DLC train.Fabysk wrote: Since Doom has a large variety of mods, couldn't we include Call of Duty: World at War. Call of Duty 4 is still #1 game on Xfire, matter of fact, and the best paintball game I've played to date was a mod for that called Modern Paintball.
I feel like they had something back around that time, but they expanded on the wrong aspects of the game. I favor Black Ops 1 more than MW2, MW3, BO2, and Ghosts, but less than than 2, 4, or WaW.

RE: Looking for Doomers to join us in Multiplayer footage for "Doom vs CoD"
The hard-headed, CoD kids will always hate on Doom and it's associates (Heretic, Hexen, Strife etc...) because of the main thing these days: Graphics. But anyone who plays Doom and such like we do, are frowned upon in their little fantasy world of killstreaks and nuke droppings. CoD is Doom if it was reduced to child's play (Ironic ain't it? A bunch of kids play CoD because their parents are incompetent bastards). And hate on Doom being 'too ancient and not flashy enough'. And CoD's developers fail to understand why Doom's lasted as long as it has, the answer: Player Creativity. CoD has none of that anymore (It had little to begin with..), and that's the reason they have to shit out a game every half year or so. To keep their little franchise alive.
EDIT: Sure I'd be game to join in some footage, just depends what's gonna be laid out.

Well cod's game engine originates from Quake 3, so whatever.

So if there was no quake 3 there would be no cod. And if there was no doom there would be no quake 3. So you must play doom.Catastrophe wrote: Well cod's game engine originates from Quake 3, so whatever.

I'm up for dicking around in Survival, with or without Samsara and ScoreDoom. Other modes/mods, at least the ones mentioned, I'm not so fond of.Supplesnap wrote: About the Video

Not possible, especially when the only people who matter in that respect are videogame CEOs busily pumping millions of dollars into the hands of balding shareholders.Supplesnap wrote:I want people to acknowledge the difference between good and bad business and design practices.
EA's been successfully milking the retards of vidjagaeming for over 15 years with cookie cutter sequelism and brand exploitation.
And in those 15 years, consumers have only gotten dumber and deafer.
What chance do you think you have to change this?!
