So did anyone win $10,000? How does this work?

You keep shooting and running around like a rat for 2 hours then an archvile kills you.
Dunno why make a tournament for this wad among all others :|

They all won. Walkerr was playing for the longest. Catastrophe took nothing for the team.
They all got some games and books. IMO playing itself was fun enough. Too bad there wasnt a round 2 with the whole server.

I kinda do.

Giving away free IWADS is typically something to be discouraged. "Oh it's just a 20-year-old game and iD won't mind" might be true but it's still no excuse. Doom2 is 5 fucking dollars on Steam. For the cost of a Subway footlong you can respectfully own Doom2.
Reinforcements: midgame Survival joining/respawning
Doom64: Unabsolved: Doom64 + Diablo II
ZandroSkins: a pack made by our community
AeniPuffs: 3D blood and bullet puff effects, free to use for your own mods

You're giving money to a company that doesn't even have the original creators of doom anymore.

This challenge was impossible and was publicity stunt for this guy to get more web reviews for his site. Also I wonder where zan admins stand on a guy illegally distributing doom.2 wad in a zipfile on his webpage whilst attracting people to visit his site?

I am hoping the doom2.wad in question was actually Freedoom's.

When he first posted, Jace Hall was trying to get in contact with id/Bethsoft about free use of Doom 2, I am assuming that they either got permission, or bought the license.
If the $10,000 prize was any hint of how much money Jace/1337Lounge has available for use, historically the Doom license was $5,000 for use by other game developers. The developers of Hacx, a commercial add-on for Doom 2, are known to have paid this for the rights to use the Doom engine.

Another example of Doom engine/resource shenanigans is Chex Quest, a free Doom engine game that was included with boxes of Chex cereal, and later for free on the internet. Chex Quest originally included resources from doom.wad in its chex.wad, and unmodified references to Doom in its executable.

Though, those are effectively "new" things done with Doom 2. Read my spoiler for more information.
Spoiler: Other (hopefully on-topic) thoughts (Open)
For reference, a precedent was set with ZDaemon (remember that port?), which at one time would download a copy of doom2.wad upon joining a server when it can not find your copy. I have a quote straight from Todd Hollenshead of id Software from back when it happened about the legality of this:
Todd Hollenshead wrote: If what you're saying is true, then ZDaemon would be inducing users to illegally download copyrighted property of id Software, in violation of the end user license agreement for any and all of the games you mentioned and also in violation of the license under which the DOOM source code was released (which I presume they use). As you have pointed out, "classic" DOOM titles, as well as Hexen and Heretic, are still sold commercially today on the id Software website, as well as other places. However, "commercial viability" is not a prerequisite for copyright infringement.

Regards,

Todd Hollenshead
No legal action was taken against ZDaemon, not even a cease and desist letter. ZDaemon and its bundled software no longer download commercial IWADs as a result of the controversy raised by this info coming out.

Does this mean you can freely share doom2.wad? NOPE! You should really buy Doom 2. It's on sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday as of this post, even!

I will contact Jace & co. for more info, as I have already contacted at least one person via PM about Doom's 20th anniversary coming up.
EDIT: Thanks to the community members that contacted me with info about this, I will refer to it in my communication. I just want to be reasonable about this

This
Also, spend $5 on a 20 years game? really? at least 0.99 or they could do the same as Shadow Warrior, make a free shadow warrior + vanilla + dosbox and another paied that would have a modified .exe (not requiring dosbox, 1080p and multiplayer...)

Id did great games, but they stayed on that games, and still depend from that games for receive some money (the newest id game being cheaper than original doom, just because old vanilla doom sells more than rage...)
Projects
Cursed Maze: DONE, V2.0
Zombie Horde - ZM09 map update: [3/15/13]

This tournament is still going on atm. However, I HIGHLY advise NOT to join the server because:
1. Improper flags (ie jumping and crouching enabled, weapons respawning and not staying on pickup, unclipped players disabled, etc.)
2. Intense, INTENSE frame drop. Seriously, during a good moment i was able to get 10fps (no thanks to hard doom)
3. Shit connection (the server is equivalent to toaster oven with Doritos Jacked).
3. The server is full 95% of the time.
4. The amount of people playing at the same time doesn't help anyone, even when you get 10 lives.
5. Don't expect to actually beat it. Given the conditions, it's nearly impossible unless you're a really REALLY good survival player with a good connection and good PC.

Funny. The People over there are saying that another 5K is up for grabs. Oh well. Not worth it really.

That was probably intentional, to make sure nobody could get the grand prize.

I am not sure about the last part because I recall that up to about 1-2 years ago Zlauncher would find and download doom2.wad (I found this out when I didnt put doom2.wad in my zdaemon folder), and the scandal has been on since about 2006 (when ralphis brought it up), so if they did stop doing it then it they only did so recently.

That's why some people waited for the shit players to die so they could have more time and patience to almost beat the level.

The flags were another thing, too. It was pointed out a lot on the spectators chat that the flags were utter shit, it didn't matter though because no one really beat it. Legion, Cata, and Soul managed to get the farthest and get some cool stuff.

IIRC, too, they're thinking of doing another DooM related event given the feedback they got from some people that were watching that were/weren't from Zandro. I'm kinda hoping they do another event soon, myself.
