When and how/why did you start playing doom, and do you regret it?

A classic question... And probably my 8th time answering it too.

I first had contact with Doom at my dad's old PC. I was just about 3 or 4 years old. It had shareware versions of Doom, Heretic, Xargon, full versions of Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D and the games from that Windows 95 collection (Chip's Challenge, Rodent's Revenge, SkiFree, you name it). I had no real preference towards any of those games, as I played many of them at an equal rate. Doom just happened to be one of the games in the list.

Since the shareware version was all that computer had, I just replayed the first episode over and over. Since I had little skill and brains to properly play it, my dad would set up god mode so I wouldn't die that easily. Even still, I had fun spending 30 to 40 minutes running around the maze-like levels, clueless on where to head next! The end of the episode always confused me at the time, as god mode stops working after that faithful teleporter. :P

I'm not gonna say I've been playing it ever since, because my family switched computers a couple of years later, so most of those old gems were lost. By then, I started to play more recent games, like Heretic 2, Unreal, Unreal Tournament... I would only get to play Doom again after being reminded of it thanks to Doom 3, which was installed by our local technician into my computer as a bonus for affording and installing a new GPU into it. That was in 2007, about 8 years later!

Now, do I regret it? Not at all. Doom is one of the best games I've come across, and one of the games to introduce me to the first-person shooter genre, which I love dearly. Its rather simple, timeless gameplay appeals to me, and its easily moddable engine only adds to the charm. The Doom community is also the first major internet one I got to be a part of, and I just can't do without all of the experience I gathered -- not just in terms of playing the game, but also largely improving my English, socializing with people and learning good life lessons.

I already have the game on Steam so, sure! Once I find enough free time to do so, I'll give it some well-deserved attention, which depends on college and Facebook! However, if you want us to start some kind of competitive activity there (which I guess is more urgent, in a way), then I shall save up next week to do so.

On second thought, I shouldn't really be arguing about ports. Maybe if you weren't stupid enough to get masterbanned from all other ports, you wouldn't be ass-kissing IDL so much and calling other ports inferior as a bad attempt to look cool.

Before I get started on this one, there are a few flaws in your sentence. First, I don't do it every single time I lose, contrary to certain people's beliefs. Second, I don't blame "everyone", my attention is usually directed towards one single player. Third, when I know I was at fault, I admit to it, either in team chat or TS. Then again, you haven't played much Doom lately, so you wouldn't know.~

I'm not really a casual player when it comes to Doom, unfortunately. I still don't take priv that seriously, but you have to admit there are times when priv gets more "serious" than usual. It depends on those who are in the server and how players are matched up against each other. There are rare occurrences when a certain priv match may be as important as a scrim round. You may or may not agree with me on this, but it is how a bunch of people, including myself, see it.

If my team loses a game, it is evident that somebody was at fault. Nothing happens by chance, unless you get screwed over by RNG (getting bad spawns) or by forces from outside (like server lag/crash, port bugs). However, these exceptions affect both teams equally 99% of the time, and considering CTF involves teams of 3 or 4, the odds of one player's misfortune ruining a team's performance is diminished. It's not like in duels where you can get spawn raped and lose easily on a bad day. In any case, if I have an idea of who is at fault for my team's loss, I point my finger at them, simply put. I don't insist on it because, well, it is just priv. Things get (and have gotten many times) more heated when it comes to scrims or tourney matches though. People have to understand I'm not being "desperate to put anyone else but me to blame for a loss". Despite how condescending I sound during those moments, I try my best to keep my honesty levels high for competition.

Hmm, say what? Did you mean to ask me why people rip on me? Ah, to put it simply... There is my "allegiance" to Blue's TS group, which leads the opposition (aka Spak) to despise me, for one, the fact I'm not afraid to point out players' flaws in games, which "break the harmony", so to speak. And there's Mobius' sensationalization of my image, which makes me look 10x as bad as I really am. ;.;

While I did imagine it would potentially cause some drama, I really am not complaining. This is more like an opportunity for me to sort any differences I may have with other people out, settle a few matters, and have fun with everything else. Er, excuse me? Since when was this about attention seeking? AMAs are quite the popular events in places like Reddit, and since Legion took the initiative to start one in these forums (which is performing quite well, because Legion has an entertaining persona), I figured that hosting one myself would be a good idea.

AMAs have been created by many known game developers, musical bands... Not even Obama hesitated to start one for himself! The primary goal behind them is for their hosts to get in touch with the people they are associated with, and that is precisely one of my objectives here. I assure you this ain't a petty quest for attention. ^^;
