Your Doom newbie mistakes

#1

Post by someoneelse » Sun Oct 28, 2012 6:39 am

Please, share what silly things you did as a newb!
(I am not sure there was no tread like this before, I searched and found none, if there was, please delete)

1. I thought berserk runs out with red haze.
2. I thought map30 is impossible to finish, that like in e1m8 your point is to lose. When finally I found a Doom website I found out you could walk through level, because there was a Romero easter egg described there.
3. It took me quite a lot to figure out how to jump in MAP02, I used idclip before D:
4. Source ports times: in 2007, I thought Legacy is the only one, and the only way to play custom wads. I was sitting on IRC waiting for hours to rarely find one person who'd be able to host a server, and then we played awkwardly, because...
5. I started to use mouse only like 3-4 years ago... I thought using mouse is ridiculous and I don't need it.

(Thanks god now I am pro and flawless. Derp.)

Shared keys will now be in Zandro! Thanks devs for their work, and users for the support!

IGOR DID LOTS OF DUMB THINGS WHEN NEW
  1. ACCIDENTALLY DELETED A USER'S ACCOUNT WHEN THEY SIGNED UP BEFORE FORUMS OPENED.
  2. USED TO USE THE WORD "DERP" UNIRONICALLY.
  3. USE TO USE JUMPING AND CROUCHING IN DOOM MAPS AND WONDERED WHY THERE WERE AREAS THAT COULDN'T BE ESCAPED.
  4. USED TO USE ONLY DOOM LEGACY TOO, AND USED IT FOR EVERYTHING EVEN ZDOOM WADS, AND STILL IGOR WONDERED WHY THINGS WOULD NOT RUN RIGHT.
  5. IGOR USED TO ALSO WAIT AWKWARDLY IN IRC FOR YEARS BECAUSE IGOR HAD NOT HEARD OF CSDOOM OR DOOM CONNECTOR WHICH HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A DECADE.
  6. ALSO USED TO ONLY USE THE ARROW KEYS TO PLAY DOOM AND NEVER USED THE MOUSE OR ANY OTHER KEYS. IGOR WAS ALWAYS CONFUSED AS TO HOW HE WAS SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE, AND WHY THE DOOMGUY ALWAYS CARRIED A GUN AROUND WITHOUT FIRING.
  7. DID NOT REALIZE THAT CUSTOM WADS WERE NOT ALL SUPPOSED TO BE PUT INTO THE SKINS FOLDER UNTIL 5 MONTHS AGO

Same with me.
Also, I thought I need to shoot at the Icon of Sin wall to defeat the boss.
Damn, I feel like a total derp now.

The first FPS I played was Quake, so I didn't know how to jump or why doors didn't open.

1. Getting Partial Invisibility and ran into everything they threw at me.
2. Always picking up health when it should be saved. (still do but less now)
I can't really remember anything else; I used to watch lots of Doom on YouTube before I got it, which was like four or five years ago.

I've joined a clan.

I thought it was fun to play with people from the same country...

If that doesn't count well... in the shareware version of Doom I always wanted to "go beyond" E1M8 by trying to IDDQD really fast once I got inside the trap room...

Some time later and after learning more english I realized that was the end of the episode

I used to type like a noob, make faces all the time, and think my mapping was perfect.

Sprint = Off
Movement = Keyboard Warrior
I originally thought zDaemon was the only source port until someone trash talked Skulltag.

Guess that was a bad mistake on their part

It took me the longest time to realize the Shotgun was quite effective for far-away enemies.

1. Rocket Launcher vs Lost Souls...
2. BFG spam
3. Trying to rush Plutonia map32
4. Spamming the fire key on SSG with no aim.

I still do this. I will always do this.

My fail was thinking using BFG is not fair and not doing it, when opponents haven't had objections like that :)

First server choice had the following file: rjump2v5.wad

I had NO idea what in the world I was doing back then. (I do now, though :P)

I've learned through playing really good players that the BFG isn't actually as helpful as one may think. It's good against players who can't/ don't know how to dodge it, but if you've ever played people like Devastation, then you know that it's useless.

WHERE IS EMPTY MUSEUM

Quite occasionally I'll fire rockets into swarms of demons only to have the one spectre in the bunch blindside me for hilarious suicide, also insisting on using the rocket launcher to fight hordes of pain elementals and by extension lost souls.

I can't help it, it's so satisfying when you pull it off :(

Glad I could help :D
We are you. We are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every moment in your deepest animal mind. We are what you hide from in your beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread.
