Brutal Doom

#1

Post by EAGLEFORCE150 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 6:44 am

Hello there. I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but it's late and i'm tired :P I just downloaded the Brutal Doom thing from Zandronum off of pirate bay and all i want to do is play the Brutal Doom mod for Doom 2. Yet when i try to play it, i get a weird message that says "this file is valid, but it's valid for another machine". I am not very computer literate, so if one of you lovely people out there wouldn't mind giving me some advice or pointing me to the right forum to post this kind of thing in, i would appreciate it immensely.

Brutal Doom on The Pirate Bay? Brutal Doom is an officially free mod, sounds shady. Just get the mod here. and all you need is doom.wad or doom2.wad. Simple, also if you got Brutal Doom off PB, that's just asking for a virus or something of the sort.

Anything off the Pirate Bay is obviously bad, and Brutal Shit is high up there. Just download the legit thing if you wanna play it.
Not to mention it's FUCKING ILLEGAL. You can possibly be banned for even mentioning that you used it.

He would not be banned for mentioning the site; warned maybe, but not banned. Linking directly to it or any downloads from it is another situation entirely.

Who downloads Doom mods from PB? Or better yet, who's this mystery person that uploads Doom mods to PB?

You can always download Brutal Doom from its site for free, there is no reason for getting it by controversial means.

Don't rely on other people to gather stuff for you, as they may be outdated or even edited from the real thing. Yes, that includes possible malicious code. It's good practice to find them yourself and download them from the source.

Like others said, It's not smart to download a free mod from a website made for illigal downloading/piracy. In my country the pirate bay is blocked(even tough all the people here that used it now just switched to kat.ph)
Just buy doom from steam(or somewhere else) to get doom.wad, and download brutal doom.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about since I use PirateBay on a regular basis and have never had any problems.

You just need to be smart and know what you're downloading BEFOREHAND. You know, can use a .torrent magnet link to open and view the contents of a file BEFORE downloading it, if you don't trust the site's description of it. If you're trying to torrent "Breaking Bad season 2" and you see that the contents consist of only a 12MB .exe file, then duhhhhhh it's a virus.

I'd also like to point out that PB is actually one of the "cleaner" and less-shady sites compared to others such as SumoTorrent which advertise lots of "sponsored download links" (aka trojans) and only offer dead/seedless torrents just to lure you in and attract net traffic so that they can continue to make money off their ads.
SyKoTiC wrote: Not to mention it's FUCKING ILLEGAL.
Wrong. Torrent files, torrent sites, and torrent software are all perfectly legal. It's just that 98% of what's seeded is copyrighted and/or commercial content (which is illegal, yes). But BitTorrent itself is not illegal. Seeding of the copyrighted software or media is illegal and punishable, but downloading and possessing it usually isn't. So it's a bit of a grey area.
SyKoTiC wrote: You can possibly be banned for even mentioning that you used it.
That's a little on the totalitarian side. That's like being arrested simply for saying "I smoke weed everyday". Also, the forum rules explicitly forbid linking to warez, not talking about them or admitting to using them outside of Doom.
Forum Rules thread wrote:Don't Link Piracy or "Abandonware" - Piracy is strictly forbidden. No links to warez, cracks, abandonware, hacks, or websites of the like.
Also, honestly, who hasn't torrented something before? I'm not saying it isn't wrong and I'm certainly not advocating it, i'm just saying that the notion of banning somebody on the grounds of confessing to using BitTorrent is a little rediculous. Even if they they admitted to torrenting the Doom IWADS themselves, they'd probably just get warned since it does piss everybody here off (i mean hey, the rest of us paid for it, right?) and is disrespectful to our heroes at ID Software.
darkstar64 wrote: Who downloads Doom mods from PB? Or better yet, who's this mystery person that uploads Doom mods to PB?
Reminds me of the time that somebody seeded Skulltag 97D (just Skulltag, no IWADS included) and posted the .torrent link in #skulltag ... Like, what the fuck is the point of that ...

It is illigal to torrent something that's not free tough. The ''only uploading is illigal'' thing is a myth, but it does count for some countries. however, only if you turn seeding off, because that's pretty much uploading aswell.

In theory, yes, downloading software/music/movies which you would normally have to pay for is theft (because what you downloaded is an "unauthorized copy", according to most EULAs) and therefore illegal. However, downloading/peering can almost never be prosecuted, because most instances can never be caught/traced, and simply possessing stolen media can't get you in trouble either because 1.) there's no way for an authority to "discover" that it's there unless they seize your computer for an unrelated warrant (child porn, murder, bomb threat), and there's no way to prove that you stole it (unless you forgot to delete the .NFO file that says "UPLOADED BY SUPER1337HACKER, PLEASE SEED!") because you can just say that you ripped the DVD/CD/software to your hard-drive yourself.

Uploading/seeding is honestly the only thing you can get nailed for, since they can "catch you in the act", so to speak. The only way to see a downloader's IP would be to BE the seeder (peers can't see each other), which the cops can't do because THEY'D be violating EULA.

If you're smart about browsing there it's for the most part clean and reliable as Aenima has pointed out already.

Also why get BD from there? Makes no sense..

I know right? Sounds odd. Makes me think that he must either be real new to Doom in general, or thought Brutal Doom was a stand alone program.

It's hilarious how people can be so psychotic towards The Pirate Bay or BitTorrent in general. Ignorance is oozing through your posting.

The only reason I can think of using TPB to download a free mod is that it comes packaged with the original game, or this person has no idea what he/she is doing.

This, right here, tells you volumes about the average Brutal Doom player. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

(Also, since this thread is now primarily about BitTorrent and piracy, can we get a split to General Chat?)
