Brutal Doom: Overdone or underdone?

#1

Post by General Mike » Thu Jul 11, 2013 3:57 pm

Here is another Doom mod that is even more popular than the RGA series, Brutal Doom. I'd like to hear what the Doom community thinks about this gory modification. You love it or hate it? Any opinions are welcome but please don't flame.

That is a matter of taste, but it sure is quite an interesting topic to bring up too, I wonder what will come of this?

I think it's an okay mod. It has good attention to detail. The new takes on Doom weapons and monsters are interesting. Splattering absolutely everything can be satisfying. On the negative side, the "modern shooter" elements do not fit with the rest of Doom, and fatalities are annoying for several reasons.

BTW, I voted "Get out of the Doom Community" because the poll options are way too limited.

EDIT: Never mind, I cannot read.

I played the shit out of it on every mod and thing possible since version 05 (I can't find any versions before that anyway) all the way to around 14 on the old rave-fm servers. Now I am completely burnt out on any brutal anything ever again and I have no idea what is even in the new versions. It was a nice wad for casual coop back then, not really that great for fighting other players though (I've tried many duels, dm, ctf).

Probably the same as the last topic. Just a different subject. I like hearing what the doom community thinks about this. I'm gonna come up with something in the doom mod community that combines RGA with Brutal Doom. I'm pondering on it.

RGA1 was fun, you should do something like that instead of 2 or 3.

The mod itself its pretty good, i like the gameplay and the eye candy it add, but TBH i dont like blood or dead bodies everywhere (and i'm a gears of war fan) if were for me, i would like it more without the "brutal" thing
Whitout a good PC ATM, i will back when 2.0 come out, :)

I enjoyed it, I still do. I always get this extreme sense of satisfaction when a demon blows up and it's insides splatter all over the walls and ceiling. It helps keep the Doom the way it was meant to be, pointless, gory violence. Playing Brutal Doom is like how you first played Doom back in 1993. While I don't care for some of the gameplay mechanics or some of the sound effects, it's fun for the satisfaction of blowing shit up. When I first played Brutal Doom, I put cheats on Ultra-Violence and went on an massive killing spree.

Dear Mike.

Not every mod in the community needs a thread by you gauging it's popularity, further development and so on and so forth..
While your interest is welcome, keep in mind the community existed before you joined it, as did most of the mods played around here.

That said, on to business:
No, in my opinion Brutal Doom isn't overdone. It's had a lengthy development and it's very popular with the casual, offline and even Youtube crowds. It's popularity on the master server, IRC and around here however is largely forgettable due to it doing away with Doom's surprisingly structured gameplay.

Lol, RGA's not even on the map anymore. Almost everyone who liked it finally realized it's just a poor man's CoD with Realm667 rips everywhere. If they still adore it, it's just because they can't play real CoD. Even Volt realized its worth and left it in the dust.

RGA1 was great though.

On topic, Brutal Doom's okay, I guess. I enjoyed it when it didn't change the core PVP gameplay too much, but once it started adding in all the gimmicks playing the wad left a bad taste in my mouth.

I guess it's okay for the occasional coop every now and then, but the "You don't HAVE to use the modern features!" claim is kinda backfired by you getting health and other types of edge from doing so, meaning if you really wanted to win, you really would need to use those features. I dunno, it just feels bastardized. At least the guy re-introduced vanilla doom movement speed (while throwing in a crappily-edited CoD: MW2 M4A1 ironsight)

I think its a good mod, it's just people get jealous of success. Think of it this way: Brutal Doom is getting players to play on this dying game. This port needs new players.

Ehhh... yes. Exactly.

I don't like the mod personally, but it's surely well done and well, what Catastrophe said: it's getting players to play Doom, this is great.

Mod itself is cool, I liked its early versions more though, not slowing down Doom's trademark insane tempo. Look at TF2: you can have awesome gore and funny stuff WITHOUT slowing gameplay down... Also, BD is terribly lagging my cardboard computer.

What's terrible, is a good old zandrama: fact that people go massively play something you don't like. And like with everything that's cool, it also brings newbies. And amongst newbies, there are noobs. And when I check latest vids from Zandronum on YT, it's mostly "let's play brutal doom" (now it isn't any more, but used to be for months). The point is, oldschool FPS (Zandronum is newschool in Quake way, not in CoD way, lol) players is a rather endangered species, and I guess they would be not happy if their Doom became newschool as well...

Used to play it every now and then on rave servers, started to play it less and less over time because of those earrape sounds and the fatalities are boring after 3rd try anyway -too much mortal kombat stuff.. seen those a trillion time already!-.. and the addition of certain stuff didn't really make sense at all -rolling to sides while in normal doom there is infinite strafing speed which beats that a million times-

The only issue I have is the fact it forces OpenGL and on older computers that some people still use today, it lags the shit out of them. I have a computer that has a 16 meg Nvidia Vanta LT graphics card that I use as a Doom server. It works magic amazingly and with a hefty 768 mb of RAM, You have to use the janitor with it to help it run smoothly. Brutal Doom should be made to run smooth on ALL computers, not just high end ones. That's like saying low end computers have no value, but they do.

It's true. It is overplayed, but that's because people like it and it's successful (also maybe a little luck in there). This is what defines a real nice project - the approval of the crowds. You can't say it sucks because as you can see it doesn't, and any anger towards the mod is blamed on the "stupid taste of the Doom community" - while we all know it's just your jealousy. This would apply to any mod really. Zombie horde and all out war apparently suck because they are just so popular. If you think it's bad because you don't like the content, that's one thing, but if you flame because it's just too popular or you couldn't mod it as well as Mark did, rethink your ideas.

Okay, a word to anyone who legitimately thinks like this, this line of thinking is really skewed. (I'm not ragging on you Sica)

A person plays a game to enjoy it, not to have their own personal dickwaggling contest with it and its author. If there's something he find that detracts from the enjoyment of said game, is it suddenly not the game's fault but it's all the players' fault because the players apparently have some vendetta against the author, and that's the one and only reason they'd say anything constructive or negative about anything he makes? That is some DeviantArt "it's not bad art, it's just his style!11 ur just a hater!!" shit right there.

Or maybe it's just something he find crappy or questionable in the wad.

Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

The "UR JUST JELLY CUZ IT'S POPULAR" argument needs to die.

Do I hate OneDirection because they're popular? No, I just really hate boy-bands.
