0003968: User reports "tooltip" -type help to be extremely annoying
An user on Zandronum forums (who I'm not naming) has posted the following to the Doomseeker 1.3.2 announcement thread on Oct 15, 2021:
Quote
Say, don't know if this is the proper place to ask this but could find
no contact info at the Doomseeker website. I have a request for a
new feature. Please under Options -> Configure -> Appearance,
give the ability to turn off the "tooltip" -type help. I find this feature
to be extremely annoying and really *should* be optional.

I don't have an account on the Zandronum forum (and I don't think the issue tracker and forums use an unified login like LDAP), so I haven't responded in the announcement thread.

I don't think I agree with this statement. One could say that adding just one option for that wouldn't hurt anyone, but add several of those "just one options" together and suddenly you have a program overflowing with them. I'm against.

Ditto, I'm also against this - at least for the reason of not understanding the user's frustration in question. Would anyone like to reach out to the user for more information, or should we resolve this as "won't fix" now?

I replied to the OP in the forum's topic.

A technical and unimportant note for this issue (re: changing the issue status to "feedback"):
Usually with MantisBT issue tracker, the "feedback" status is used to request feedback from the reporter. In my case, I am the "reporter" and my reply to this issue would consider my "feedback" to be given and revert the issue status to whatever ("new"?), however I am simply someone who forwarded the original reported issue from the forums. Following the notes, I can't say this issue to be entirely "new" nor "acknowledged" or "confirmed" or "resolved", and I can't change this issue to be awaiting "feedback" from an user which doesn't exist on this issue tracker. I could change the reporter to be Zalewa, so it would be waiting on Zalewa's feedback, but would I do that? Eh, whatever, it's "feedback" on me now. But I'm assigning to Zalewa for the action they have taken.

Hi! Yes, I'm the original poster of this. Sorry it was posted on the
regular Zandro forums, as evidenced by the Additional Information"
link referenced above. My request was for there to be an option to
turn off tooltip like function in the Appearance section of the
Doomseeker - Configuration page accessed by selecting Options ->
Configure from the main menu. I didn't post in Zandro-Bugs because
1) it's actually Doomseeker
2) it's technically not a bug
But I find tooltip behavior to be extremely annoying. I'm trying to
read something in the main interface to servers and then have a popup
text box which is chock-full of way more information than I was trying
to read completely obliterate my view of what I was reading because of
wherever I may relax my mouse cursor. It's a distracting behavior.

Some people LIKE tooltips. I, and maybe others, may not. I'm not saying
that the feature should be removed from Doomseeker, just that there
should be a way of turning the feature off for those of us who find it
to be a distracting, nuissance behavior.

Thank you Zalewa for contacting me on the main Zandro forum to update me
on this!

Thanks for the explanation. I can understand this being frustrating for certain users. I also note the tooltip is hidden for that one server on cursor with a left mouse button press. The tooltip display is also instant, unlike in Create Game compatibility flags (Zandronum). It could be helpful to add a tooltip delay to the server browser, but this is Zalewa's decision to make what to do about this issue reported.

And so far, I only support adding a tooltip delay because of what Zalewa said in 0003968:0022096 about adding more options.

The lack of a tooltip delay on the server list is intentional since it's the primary method of getting detailed info for a server. Of course Doomseeker has had a secondary method of getting similar info for a long time (the server details panel), so having the ability to turn off the tool tips and just use that panel seems like a reasonable request to me.

Looking at the panel today, it looks like it could use a little bit of TLC as well (layout is somewhat broken in some cases, particularly with team games).

Imo remove the server details panel (not very useful right now and takes too much attention away), remove the tooltip, keep default double left-click action as "Join" (?), move the "Join" as the first option in the right click menu, and create a new floating window for server details as an option below "Join" (or "Refresh" below that).
My idea: The new server details window should include a nicer list of players, WADs, flags, server address. Move stuff from the main UI there to reduce first time clutter and visual stress: remove "Address", "WADs", maybe "Map" from the main UI – the address can be put into a tooltip if really desired, however the tooltip delay should be increased to normal.

I created issue 0003984 to talk about the main UI and server details more in detail.

It would definitely be nice if there was a way to get solid metrics on what people expect from the user interface, since I can definitely say I'm pretty much the opposite of you then. To me the info in the table is more about filtering and sorting to a subset of servers I may be interested in and then picking a server from the list is driven entirely by the detailed info in the tool tips (is anyone I know playing? What mods are being run?).

So to me the detailed tool tips are a vital part. What I can't tell you is if most people are like me or like you/OP. Although since I'm not aware of anyone complaining until OP, my suspicion is that most people are either indifferent or prefer it as is.

My issue is that the detailed info is hidden behind multiple tooltips (and also how OP sees them as an issue), and the alternative (the server details panel) is not good either. My proposal is to unify it to a single details window (floating): Tells everything about who are playing, what mods are being run.
I may have been indifferent before, though I recall making a note somewhere on this tracker about wanting to do a redesign – and never did it, but I spent that time finding some inconsistencies in the UI (0003676).
Honestly, I use the server details panel because it's the only viable option for me now. I'd prefer not to use it as it is, however.
