turning HQ rescaling on makes it a lot worse

EDIT: same happens with godsphere in shotgun frenzy. I activate it and lag out the next moment.

Happens as well if i f12 someone who takes the invul.

Maybe it's not related, but what if it's Announcer issue? Check if you are still having the problem after picking up the same sphere second time on same map. If second time you aren't lagging, then it's because Announcer sound is loaded up on first pickup, and that also explains why you got worse lag when you turn on HQ rescaling (more load on processor, afaik).

Yeah, the second time the lag is gone. So how do i go around and fix this?

And why isn't it the same with a megasphere, soulsphere?

This may possibly be related to the lag issue when an announcer sound is made.

I can confirm this happens as well, on my netbook. It seems that on "weaker" computers any/all announcer sounds that are played will lag you the first time. So sphere pickups, "welcome to xx", and medal announcements lag your fps for a noticeable split second. However, the second time it plays it does not lag me.

Was this any different in Skulltag? Is this the same online and offline?

As I've stated before (in the thread that somebody made about this), I think that this has to do with the announcer sounds being compressed in FLAC format.

Please download my minimal example wad here and tell me if you get any framerate drops when selecting the Chainsaw. I replaced DSSAWUP with a FLAC version of the same sound (reversed as well).

No dropped framerate from that chainsaw

Well, at least for me the official Zandronum announcers are in ogg and not in flac format (see me comment here). Where did you get the flac announcers from?

I can confirm that it wasn't any different in Skulltag. The problem is 99% that sounds are cached the first time you use it, until that they aren't in memory so they make lag. In my opinion, this can be avoided in two ways:
Way one. Cache all announcer sounds on startup (probably gonna increase startup time on all computers).
Way two. Make caching in separated thread so it doesn't produce lag while playing, in that case you just continue to play and sound will be played as fast as it's caching is finished.
P.S. I may be wrong with the meaning of "caching" word, by that I mean loading from disk to RAM or however it works.
P.P.S. Another good example of this is Zombie Horde wad, where is a weapon "Doomradio" which produces lag for all the computers (because the files are slighty big), though it's just 1-5 tics for newest ones. For older ones, it makes long lag for several seconds.
@Frits: you can avoid lags by simply completely disabling announcer.

Oh. That's odd, Torr. I've been using this FLAC-based announcer PK3 for what seems like ... forever. Infact I don't remember where I got it. But it's all of the default skulltag announcer sounds.

Ah, you are using some Skulltag announcers. I was referring to the official Zandronum announcer that is included in a full Zandronum stock installation.

@bluewizard & Devs:

I can confirm this happens to me as well, only with all announcer related pickups. First time of each pickup it stutters for about 2 seconds and then returns to normal. I'm not running a weak machine it shouldn't be happening at all.

@Devs only:

Specs (in case they help in any way):

ASUS G53SX-RH71
16 GB DDR3-1333 Dual Channel RAM
i7-2670QM Quad Core 2.2 GHz (3.1 GHz Turbo) Hyperthreaded CPU
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M 2GB dedicated/2 GB Shared (4 GB VRAM total)
2x 500GB HDDs @ 7,200 RPM each
Realtek HD Audio
1080p LED Native Resolution
Windows 7 Professional w/ SP 1 x64 (64-Bit)

Pushing 450+ FPS on average without mods of any kind (still happens, and I'm usually running VSync to 60 FPS)

Does this also happen if the announcer sounds are stored in an zip archive without any compression?

This also happens with .ogg files in PK3's if this helps at all.

For my theory it's important that the container (pk3, zip) itself doesn't use any compression. So unless it happens to .ogg files in a pk3 without any compression from the pk3, it doesn't help (in)validating this theory.

'http://zandronum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=2064#pid25380 [^]' is an announcer with WAD as container, i.e. no compression in the container itself. Can somebody test if this also lags?
