Windows 10

#1

Post by *icefox*avp* » Sun Jun 07, 2015 6:24 am

Windows 10 (codenamed Threshold) is an upcoming computer operating system being developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. First presented at a glance in April 2014 at the end of the first keynote at Build 2014, it is scheduled for general availability on July 29, 2015. It is currently in public beta testing through the Windows Insider program. During its first year of availability, an upgrade to Windows 10 is being offered at no charge to all consumer users of genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1 Update.

The goal of Windows 10 is to unify the operating systems of Microsoft's PC, Windows Phone, Windows Embedded and Xbox One product families, as well as new product categories such as the Surface Hub and HoloLens, around a common internal core. These products will share what Microsoft calls a common, "universal" application architecture and Windows Store ecosystem that expands upon the Windows Runtime platform introduced by Windows 8. Windows 10 provides further integration with Microsoft services and platforms, such as the addition of Cortana (an intelligent personal assistant), a notification system that can be synchronized between devices, and new Xbox Live features. A new default web browser, Microsoft Edge, will also make its debut in Windows 10, though Internet Explorer will still be available in a reduced capacity for compatibility reasons. Microsoft has not clarified the reasoning for naming the new operating system Windows 10 instead of Windows 9.

I fear something. Windows 10 can handle Zandronum? Windows 10 Will erase all of your files? Im 7 and 8.1 user.

If Windows 7 apps work on Windows 10, zandronum should work as well.

To avoid potential confusion between the latest iteration, and ancient versions of Windows like 95 and 98.

Ok. Windows 10 will erase all of your files before installation?

If it has the same option as windows 7, you can choose upgrade and it will save the current windows version into a folder.

it sounds like microsoft is trying to turn the PC in to a hub/server for there own products. it also means that, for people who don't own any other microsoft products, a lot of windows 10 features and services will go unused. and that means alot of wasted money for something that won't get used.

A developer has.
Microsoft developer wrote: Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

Code: Select all

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {
and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

Chances are quite high. Gabe Azul even provided screenshots of Microsoft Word 95 running on Windows 10; though it's not as related, it shows that they are still committed to software compatibility.

You need to elaborate much further on this. The Upgrader (assuming that is going to be the path that 95% of users will take) should never play around with the user's home directory. Plus, if you have a good backup system, you need not to worry about this at all. Also, installed applications (omitting Metro, but I assume the same case -- though the data is stored in the System root...) should also still remain intact.

Doing an in-place upgrade will not erase files. The in-place upgrade is only suggested for 7, 8, and 8.1 users. I can stick zandro on my Windows 10 burn-down VM to see how well it does, but i am fairly confident there should be no issues.

That's a really good question, I don't know if Windows Upgrade will mess with the MBR Bootloader.

Best thing to do would be wait until GRUB supports whatever Windows 10 does, then reinstall it as your main bootloader.

Zandy apparently ate it. Guess it wanted the ice-cream badly.

Won't upgrade to 10 from 7; I'm perfectly fine with what works right now. And since this is supposed to be the last version of Windows, I'd say 7 will still be the right and proper OS, unless someone provides advantages to using the newest when it comes out in a few weeks.

windows 7 support ends in 2020, also windows 10 is most likely to have a smaller memory footprint (like win 8/8.1 does) and gennneraly be smoother in terms of performance.

Honestly, there aren't many. The only thing worth looking forward to is DX12, which most games probably won't utilize for some time.
