Why do you still play Doom?
RE: Why do you still play Doom?
I won't repeat the stuff that has already been said, although it is tempting.
I think that the improvement in controls is worth mentioning for this too, or maybe I just couldn't figure out how to set up old doom.exe config. Who knows.
Another point, which is indirectly said already, is the modding capabillity.
I have messed with a modding system here and there, because my positive experience with Doom modding gave me high expectations for the newer games.
I must admit that in that regard those games are sub-par, mostly because they either lack detailed information on modding and how the game interprets that information (see: M&B: Warband), or just require the most suckish program and have a limited system, which can only be worked around with a strange scripting laguage (See: TES: V Skyrim).
Doom is just that easier to get into and yields products of way larger magnitude in comparison to the base game in comparison.
So in light of what have been said up to now, Ted is on the right track here.
Just my two cents though.

1.- I like guns.
2.- Tons of custom content.
3.- There's people around here I like to play with.

Why is finding the user CP so hard?
RE: Why do you still play Doom?
The extremely fast pace this game is played at, makes it really hectic and fun.
Loads of custom content that's being published everyday.
And last but not least the oh-so small, but fun community!

Solid game-play and design. I have yet to see the creativity and variety of enemies that DOOM offers, most other games have "generic shooter guy" #561. I'll always find arcade style run and gun more fun than hiding behind chest high walls. Doom started the mod scene and continues to this day.

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
It's all the stuff together that keeps me around Doom.
It's about how the game is extremely dynamic.
It's about how there is an enormous amount of community-made maps, with a huge doubt a person can complete all of them in their life, allowing you to playing on completely new locations, enjoying the game even more (at that point, I meant just maps). And mapping for Doom has never been easier due to 2D map layout (which does not restrict you from creating 3D floors).
It's about the opportunities that featured engines (like Zandronum) give to modders, letting them make revolutionary gameplay changing mods which become a hit for some time (or forever).
It's about people around. People I know, people I'm friends with, people I'm enemies with, people I'm helping.
It's about the fact that Doom is awesome.

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
Actually, I got bored of doom, but I like to play their mods online, also I replaced doom2.wad by freedoom.wad just by curiosity, and frankly, almost no mod I played suffered from that, since most of them uses skulltag data or just some modified doom2 textures/monsters
EDIT:And about Total Chaos, I hope that will be released while I'm alive

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
Community is the biggest plus for me - I've made some great friends from Doom and although there are a few toxic players, the majority of players are friendly and will help new players. If you compare this recent popular games LoL for example as a lot of people here play that 80% of the community there is toxic.
Also it's so fast paced and the movement system is so unique and still is even to this day. There are still not many games with a similar movement system.
Doomguy is a badass.

Addicting mods mainly.
RE: Why do you still play Doom?
Because
1/There is a lot of original and fun wads.
2/There is some mods who are fun too!
3/Better to play DOOM than slow FPS for me.

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
In addition to all the great reasons others have given, I have yet to find another game with better Deathmatch. Everything else honestly feels like shit by comparison, even with "wow so kewl and new" graphics.
Doom DM on a piece of shit map > DM on basically every other game.

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
Also, when you join a survival or dm game of doom, you can at least expect the playerlist not to be completely populated by people that are pants on head retarded. Mostly, but that's still better than ENTIRELY.

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
The fact that there's no limit of possibilities with Doom.
Fast-paced action that you cannot find in another game.
There is none like Doom!
(Also for the few friends I've met here.)

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
Got to start somewhere with this posting thing. I play because of nostalgia, and the fact that mods like complex make the game feel new again with RNG constantly giving new monsters. Also, I am astounded at the rate new high quality wad packs are churned out. Just love Doom, how couldn't you

RE: Why do you still play Doom?
The custom content. I'm not going to lie; I think that E2 and E3, and some of E1 and Doom 2 is not fun. (E1's fine tbh, it's just some of the levels are distinctly worse than others. I dislike MAP09 although others love it; MAP12 and MAP19 I just dislike but I'm not sure why, and MAP21, MAP24, MAP28... actually most of the D2 hell levels are just irritating to play)
However, the mods made by the community breathes new life in the game. The map packs extend upon the better parts of D1 and D2's maps, the gameplay mods let you play stuff familiar to you in new ways, and some use an engine in ways it was never meant to.

It's a classic. The game is still great, and the community support is just amazing - they keep Doom alive with source ports and mods.
