theory: older duel maps, if they were released today, would be considered inferior in both playstyle and funfactor to modern maps with more catering to the modern playerbase
example maps: dwango 5 map01, doom2 map01, judas23, dwango5 map07, among others

RE: the older maps: would they be accepted now?
This is dumb because I would say some are good but other are not (d2m1).
I think that d2m1 is a complete crap map that mostly gets played because it's really oldschool. It has awful spawns, plays super campy, and the game generally revolves around hoping that when you die, you spawn far enough away to grab a weapon (or top spawn w/ bfg/rockets/ssg).
Judas23 is a good that (that I personally dislike) which has fast paced spawnfragging/spawn controls. I think it's pretty similar to ssl2 in that regard (not sure why this map wasn't included). It's hard to get the bfg if both players are competent, unlike something like d5m1.
d5m1 is a pretty campy map if played right, but most players on Zandronum just seem to run from the outside straight into the bfg room. It can be pretty campy, but if both players are good, you generally know 99% of the time where the opponent is, and can be pretty exciting. d5m1 is sort of similar to d2m1 without the abysmal spawns, if played correctly.
d5m7 I'm not really good at so I can't tell you, but its mostly knowing where the spawns are, hearing them, and trying to kill the enemy before they grab the ssg.
I think all the maps above, with the exception of d2m1, are good duel maps.

RE: the older maps: would they be accepted now?
As these maps still have the playerbase of those who actually like the above, it will be harshly critisized as not bringing anything new visually. The funfactor, still, will remain there (or not, for those who hate *insert map here*).

RE: the older maps: would they be accepted now?
I think judas would definitely be accepted. d5m1 only if people saw it as an improvement to d2m1, which probably would been seen as awful along with d5m7, as they are now stripped of any ancient history they hold.
RE: the older maps: would they be accepted now?
This really would have to depend on the map. A lot of older 90s/early 2000s duel/dm maps are quite mediocre or even just bad (just look at ~99% of Dwango maps), though there are those golden relics like SSL2 and Judas and such that are fun for many and pretty solid maps which aged quite well. As Bob said, popular maps from wads like Dwango5 may well be seen as awful nowadays pending on what perspective it is viewed from. This might also be pending based on how the maps are played.
In the end, I think quite a bit of this would be tied to preference. As far as newer maps go, however, I think the acceptance of newer maps is something that is much more difficult to achieve than the acceptance of the older maps that are part of the norm in dueling (Alexmax's Duel32 map stats seem to hint at this, but this could be just one of many possibilities so it is just a single hypothesis).
