Freeware or Open Source Programs/Applications

Want to share a neat free App or Program? Post it here.

Freemake Video Converter
Freemake Video converter is a great video converter with subtitle support and many different formats including Bluray and even SWF. You can donate any amount you choose to get extra features such as to edit the subtitles in a MKV to the font and size of your choosing but nothing that's absolutely needed will be locked. There are no bullshit watermarks over the video so its great for cutting down frames if you want to make gifs of videos with high frame rates and need to chop those unneeded frames.

Floola
This is what I use when I want to put videos or music onto my iPod Classic. In my opinion this is SOOOOOO much better than iTunes. It also works with iPhones I believe.

Lastly, for Android and iPhone: Sketch Guru
A great photo app that doesn't just apply some dumb bullshit filter on top of a picture.

Also, I have a request. I'm looking for a free program that works like Adobe flash that can do frame by frame editing. I'm trying to make the kind of gifs with the texts or pictures over people or things (like the shadowfox gif of the guy getting dropped kicked into a small kiosk shop. I dun haz links s0rz) and Gimp is a pain in the ass to do it with.

Windows application:

InfanView
is basic but powerful graphic viewer that is little but can do big. I often use it for my doom sprite. Is also able to play some media and I highly suggest to download the plugins pack so it can read more format.

GIMP
is a decent image editor that have many tool and feature that support plug-in to extend his functionality. Is a must have if you want to make your custom skin for Zandronum!

Audacity
Is great tool to edit your sound effect, support multi-track and can convert your sound to various forma (with the help of plugins sometime). Always nice to have around.

Notepad++
Is in a nutshell, a better and more powerful version of notepad. If you like editing decorate code outside of slade/xew/ect...you can define the language to make it more pleasant to read!

DECORATE language defined for Notepad++ (not made by me, may be outdated but still nice to have around. You can import this from Language -> Define your language... -> Import)
example:
Image
download: http://forum.zdoom.org/download/file.php?id=15780
mirror: http://www.mediafire.com/download/klbyl ... _6.3.2.zip
source: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=34496

Not a software/freeware...but still nice to have around for any power user. It contain several tool to configure your OS in one spot ;3 (vista and + only)
Make a new folder anywhere you want and paste the following:

Barkmin.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

you can replace < Barkmin > to < AdminTool> or ect if you wish =p. If done successfully..you should see something like this Image

Okay, so for graphics:
Paint.NET – A powerful graphics program with its GUI similar to the old MS paint. Works under Windows only and it's Freeware.
Inkscape – Inkscape is a professional vector graphics editor for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It's free and open source.

Okay, now the videos, quite empty list:
VirtualDub – An old, but very good tool for quick editing and converting the videos.
mkvtoolnix – An open source tool for creating MKV media formats.

And music player?
Foobar2000 – Extendable freeware music player, its extensions can go up to DSP effects and adding not widely supported formats, take the emulated formats as an example.

I don't get it. You say to make a new folder, then copy/paste that line, then replace barkmin to AdminTool... Ok so... how does that work? I'm so confused..

Anyhow, there is always PortableApps.com Has alot of Apps that you can put on your External Drive, or a USB Stick. Its pretty freaking useful. I used it alot when I had no net, and had to take my Dad's laptop to a hotspot.. Spot. Its the best thing ever.

Here is a list of all the Apps I use, sadly though, I cannot list my favs, cuse there is so much to list heh. > My Portable Apps List

Trust me, it looks like a long list, but each one has a purpose.

EDIT: There is another thing I would like to Mention. Its DOSBox Game Launcher It's a Frontend Launcher based off of D-Fend. The creator also provides Free Gamepacks on his Site

It's easy to set up and use. You should give it a try if your a Old School (DOS) gamer :p

Bootless Star
  • This program offers an environment and centralized user configuration for modules to take advantage; this program is module based.

    • Bootless Star Modules
    • Doom Builder 2
      • A front-end tool that allows the user to easily compile the Doom Builder 2 project directly from the stored Subversion local working copy. This is used to generate developmental builds, not official builds.
    • Doom Builder 64
      • A front-end tool that allows the user to easily compile the Doom Builder 64 project directly from the stored Subversion local working copy. This is used to generate developmental builds, not official builds.
    • GZDoom Builder
      • A front-end tool that allows the user to easily compile the GZDoom Builder project directly from the stored Subversion local working copy. This is used to generate developmental builds, not official builds.
    • The DeLorean
      • This module gives the user the ability to backup the users home directory (%USERPROFILE%) using 7Zip
    • TGRDM3 Compiler
      • If properly customized, this allows other ZDoom and\or Vavoom projects to be compiled in ZDoom's ZIP standards.

You don't need to change the Barkmin name. If you want to use the AdminTool name..just make a new folder and copy paste this as the folder name :

AdminTool.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

its great for windows 8 users as it brings back a normal start menu but brings allot of customizeability to the table aswell. and yes even the explorer is customizeable with this.

Color Quantizer is a very useful tool if you're fucking around with palettizing PNGs.

RotSprite is useful for rotating sprites (wow what a surprise).

And this little program has a selection of (pixel-art) scalers (most notably XBR), which can come in handy.

FileOptimizer is a handy little tool for byteshedding.
And if you really want to kill time running PNG squishers, you can try ScriptPNG or pngslim if you have lost all sensibility.
(although do mind that you'll have to set the sprite offsets manually once again if you run these)
Dear LawCounsels,
To prove your compressor works, I suggest you try it on your posts and then post only the result.

We all know an ideal lossy compressor would output 0 bytes for your posts, so see if you can beat that.

Have a nice day.
Air Stream Android and Apple
a Media stream that can do over the internet and over wifi. I use this when I want to watch a movie or anime I have on my computer but want to be somewhere else besides my computer. I recommend using MX Player for you Android users because it supports a lot of video files including MKV with subtitles and even works with subtitle files that are not embedded into the file it self. It even does http streaming. Its basically as close to VLC as you're gonna get on your phone.

TubeMate Android only
This is what I use to watch the ut00bs on my phone. It bypasses ADs and even lets you download straight to your phone. It is better than the Youtube app your phone comes with. MX Player also comes handy here

Open Broadcaster Software - records screen, games, a part of screen. Produces already compressed video file with h264 compression. Can tap into NVidia Hardware Encoder (Shadowplay). Actually works, although for me the recorded audio is always desynched by 2 seconds and 800 milliseconds. Can serve as a replacement for FRAPS.

Doomseeker - a real answer to cross-platform server browser.
Doomseeker dev builds - unofficial Doomseeker builds for Windows.
Gamer's Proxy - a program to emulate ping and packet losses.

OBS is good but it doesn't run on Laptops. Like it literally says "You have a laptop? mmmm sorry man can't let you do that"

Why would a software have a specific form factor requirement? That's outrageously ridiculous if this is actually true, but looking over the site - I don't see anything relating to this....

musicbee's a pretty cool itunes replacement
http://getmusicbee.com/

xmp is a pretty damn good module music player, but it's unix-like only
if you use windows, stick with xmplay, but if you're a linux user, it's a whole helluva lot better than the alternatives (mikmod, modplug, etc)

Linux. It's an operating system, not application. But still it is Open Source.
Spoiler: Why Linux? (Open)
You won't get this out of nothing while working on major mod right before you save huge progress.

tuxguitar is a dream of a program for composing music, if you know what you are doing, which i am not.
(medicris got the honor for this one iirc)

EDIT: that only happens in every second windows version, that is known. (actually, I haev had a win vista, win 7 and win 8 here, and only win 7 don't suck :G (except it takes a while to load, so I usually do something else while I wait lawl))
