I like the gun sprite from a few posts ago, the angle looks to line up really nicely unlike some pseudo-3D custom guns I've seen. However, the one above - is that just the Heretic player sprite in white?

Not really close to being finished just yet, but here's a hand-drawn shotgun I'm working on. The second frame's obviously the most unfinished of the bunch (and the one I'm currently working on)

It's a bit of both really, and it depends on the sprite in question. Most of it is done manually, but I'll sometimes use a gradient on flat surfaces (though pretty translucent ones in this case) to get a headstart on giving an area some texture - I did this on the second and third frames, while the first frame was completely manual (it hadn't occurred to me to employ gradients when I was doing that one).

If you finish it, I would be interested in having it replace the current Mercenaries Saiga sprite. Would need pumping frames and a drum magazine, but I could edit those in if you don't feel like it.

Yeah, I got a lot of influence from his spritework, so that's probably no surprise.

It's certainly possible - the pump is made as a seperate layer entirely (with the tube/mechanism shit drawn in beneath it) so that making a pumping animation won't be too difficult. As for a clip or drum magazine, I already planned to have an alternate, shorter pump so that I can make a version that appears clipfed - a drum version wouldn't be too much different. It certainly wouldn't be very accurate to the actual gun, but I generally value making stuff look cool in-game over strict realism.
