Deathmatch Revival - Release Party!

Post by Doomkid » Sat Apr 05, 2014 6:25 am

Woah, it's finally finished!

Image

Thanks primarily to the efforts of Doomguy93, DMR has made it through to the finish line. After I packed it in, him and Joe Pallai took over and made things shine far more than they did when I was in charge.

Here we have 35 maps, all in different styles - Tested them out with MrCrispy, Lextiic, and DG93 on a variety of different ports, and man did we have a blast! It works just fine with Zandronum, Odamex and Zdaemon.

Any DMflags are appropriate for these maps, NS or OS.

Created by Doomguy93, Joe Pallai, Guardsoul, one_Two, mrthejoshmon, W1D3A55, Bobvorn, Captain Toenail, TheMionicDonut, Lextiic, Omegalore, Inkie, Flamen0d, KatZune, joe-ilya, Springy, Phendrena, DataCore, Walter Confalonieri, FireFish, Mr. Fiat and myself.

I really hope you all enjoy playing these, a lot of TLC went into this project.

Enjoy!

Very Schmexy looking screen shots you took man :D

I'm really glad to see that this project is finally archived on /idgames. I can't believe it took over a year to complete, but the numerous delays were well worth it. I also never thought I would have ever been leading a community project in the Doom community lol. But I'm glad I took over the reins when you and Joe Pallai stepped down.

I lost track of all the people who participated in DMR whose maps didn't make the final version. I think they deserve some kind of special thanks for their attempts and contribution to the project. Maybe we can make a special version of DMR of the cut maps? Just a thought.

To the authors whose maps did not make it into the official version, I just want to say that your works were not forgotten. Never give up on mapping. There is always a possibility of a sequel to DMR and you're all welcome to come back with new/improved maps.

Wow, good to see that this is finished. Excellent work there!
I dont care about how bad your maps are. Everything can be improved.

@Dusk, which map was yours? From the version I started off with (v9a) I didn't see any map in the credits text file. I don't recall cutting yours nor do I recall your map?

Dusk, I remember being very excited to see your map, though I stopped leading the project half a year (or more) ago and I never received your wad to my knowledge. This is a damn shame, as the screenshots looked really nice. Since it wasn't in any betas within the last 4-6 months, I assumed you'd contacted DG93 and your map wasn't going to be used, but apparently that isn't the case?

You should post a link to your map here if you've completed it - It looked awesome and it would be a shame to not get proper use out of it. Perhaps a DMR extras wadfile is in order?

@Doomkid, that DMR extras wad idea is exactly what I had in mind. There are at least five maps that can be in that wad.

@Dusk/Doomkid, I've never even played that map up until now....and I really wish I saw it before I made the official DMR version. The map is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and it plays extremely well. My deepest and sincere apologies for the confusion that happened back in July last year. Things were very unorganized when Doomkid stepped down mostly due to the fact that there were at least 4 different DMR threads on Doom forums. Nobody knew what maps were in the pwad and what maps weren't. I also wasn't even a registered user on the Zandronum forums at the time (I want to kick myself in the ass for that).

If it is fine with you Dusk, I would like to include your map in a DMR extras pwad. I'm thinking of making the pwad consist of maps (MAP36 - MAP40) so I can upload it to /idgames and provide the zdaemon DMR host with the link. He could add it to the list of pwads and players can play all 35 levels along with the extras. If I would have known about your map, I would have used it, and it would definitely have made a great addition to the 35 level pwad.

If Dusk agrees to this, I think it's a wonderful idea. Something so awesome should not go unplayed. I'm really sorry that it was somehow not included in one of my old betas - I lost track of things badly, that's why I ended up handing off leadership altogether - It's my fault, I apologize!

I'm fine with that, in any case it's better than putting it to /idgames as a single deathmatch map.

Okay, let me preface anything I'm about to say here with the knowledge that
I've not played Deathmatch in ANY one of these maps. So I really don't have
any idea how well they will play but I'll note a couple I suspect will be
pretty good for that.

Furthermore, I will try to keep my comments limited to positive review and
don't really feel like starting any flame-wars. If I don't review your map
in this wad file, don't hate on me. That said, the first map I actually like
is Map06. It's a good quality map with some decently thought out lighting.
From the looks of it, the author could really make some creepy single-player
maps and if he/she hasn't, maybe should consider.

I like Map09 and Map12. They have some nice texture usage.

Maps 11, 19, 20 and 25 are VERY Dwango. As I understand this project, that's
the point. These map authors have achieved the stated goal!

Map14 is truly an awesome piece of work. I see a cross between the style of
the original Doom and Doom II. It has a simple layout but I really like it.

Map17 is an homage map. I like a good homage. And when you can take on both
the elements and spirit of an original Doom II map, or in this case, MULTIPLE
Doom II maps, you've got my vote. Just a real nice mixture.

Map18 I am looking forward to playing in deathmatch because it has a larger
scale that would accommodate many players. I like having alot of players.

Someone went all Unidoom with Map21. Looking forward to deathmatch in this
because I think it's friggen hilarious!

Maps 24 and 30 are also a really nice maps with great texture work.
I really want to play these.

I'm glad to hear that you liked the wad phineas. You will most definitely enjoy playing it online. I highly recommend playing with at least four players. There is a server on ZDaemon of DMR called Absolute Wrath - Deathmatch Revived. :)

Here you go Dusk: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... r_2014.zip

Sorry for the wait. I've just been busy these past couple of months. Ty Halderman updated the file I gave him. He didn't update the title though. It should say Deathmatch Revival [Special Edition]: 40 Cross Compatible Maps By The Doom Community.

Your map is MAP36 in the pwad.

There were also a few other edits on some maps (nothing too significant). See text file for details.
