More than a DOOM player

#1

Post by Major Bach » Sun Jan 26, 2014 3:32 pm

So lately Ive been fiddling around with DOOM and DOOM II, and I got hit with the idea to try out some of the other games that use the DOOM engine. Great fun was had when I loaded up Heretic and ChexQuest. But the one game that truly stood out was Strife. It combined an FPS and an RPG and it was pretty damn cool. Anyone else try any of these games?

Megaman adaptation is pretty interesting and popular (and it's free).
You can check some of the other IWADs here -> http://wiki.zandronum.com/IWAD

There is also a kind of Sonic TC but I think it's based on Doom Legacy.

I highly recommend the Mega Man one that was already mentioned, if you can put up with its retarded userbase.

Thanks for your support. =P

I've played the Pinochestein 3D Total Conversion (both it's doom legacy and zdoom versions). Although it includes spanish text and it has many chilean in-jokes, I suppose anyone may have fun shooting evil undead cops.
Why is finding the user CP so hard?

Hexen's a Heretic continuation, A LOT cooler.

HeXen can be pretty boring at times (or is it because I suck at puzzles?). I've found Heretic more interesting than HeXen tbh. Also Strife is amazing. Enough said.

we generally don't talk about strife here since strife doesn't work online, so naturally any strife focus goes to zdoom

we generally don't talk about hexen because the few people who do play it online tend to either not know about these forums, or don't care about here

heretic gets played for FNF and SNS occasionally, and some servers pop up for it here and there
it's also the closest to doom whodathunkit

hacx might as well not exist here

zdoom iwads that aren't megagame might as well not exist here (what the fuck is a harmony)

Strife. Second favorite game ever, only surpassed by Doom 2.
Plot is excellent, gameplay is fun, the minor RPG elements were innovative. I don't care if it lacks a shotgun (which most people complain about).

Sadly, multiplayer is a big no-no, like ijon said, but when I'm a good mapper I'll do a Strife multiplayer map pack.

Strife was an amazing game because it put the Doom engine into a RPG type game. Shame it doesn't work online... I'd love that. Heretic and Hexen are also great games too. They added things to the engine that became ZDoom standards and Zandronum's as well. Chex Quest is like playing Doom in another wrapper. Still good. Megagame... not so much (no offense mm8bdm players). It just doesn't feel like it's own game. Feels slower.

Mm, outside of Harmony, Foreverhood, and Action Doom 2 I don't know any Zdoom games with their own iwads? If you know more, please tell, I'm very interested in that. (Isn't Harmony vanilla/limit removing compatible?)
I remember there was something for (with) GZDoom, it was some big pack, 300MB or something? I remember it has a lot of eyecandies and a 3D meat you could hack with a chainsaw.

Also, I think there's many people that would talk iwads here :) And/or play Hexen. Games of Hexen were my favorite times on Zandronum... You just need to go on IRC and find people ready to take the challenge if you want to coop it, randoms will mess it up, and every session from hub to hub will take hours.

Im gonna have to look up some of these games later. I love branching out and trying new things. I sat down and played heretic for a while, and its a nice change of pace to Doom. I really love the fantasy style it brings to the table. That being said, Ive been using the Samsara mod to play as Duke Nukem, which is very satisfying. :)

Speaking of HeXen, we should probably attempt getting a group of people whom actually own the game together and casually play matches of it. Perhaps we could make HeXen more commonly played.

I've played some co-op on HeXen before with like 3 people and it was pretty fun, but it was late at night and I got sleepy, so the fun didn't last long.

Ppl DO join hexen servers -full server on hexen wtfbbq but it happened-.. but suddenly you get 7-10 less players per day and eventually hexen is unplayed again.

All the iwads that I already played:
Doom,Doom2,Heretic,Hexen (completing at my old machine),Strife (it's actually good, it could receive an adapted version for zan),chex quest,Action Doom 2 (+AD2 DLC),Harmony, Foreverhood (oh a great rip =/), Cursed Maze, Megaman, haze prototype(still the best iwad I have played yet)...
I think there's even more iwads out of here :O

EDIT: + sonic iwad and the cool hacx xD

I think most of the iwads are dead and not doom beause of mods, try to find a server with vanilla maps and players, there's but you'll see 90% of the players playing servers with mods (and I think it's because there's almost no hexen/heretic mods for being played online?
