Doom 4 Rebooted, originally called "Call of Doom"

So, to sum it up, because the original Doom 4 was too much like Call of Duty, it was scrapped because "An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect", and then it was redone (possibly from scratch).

Oh, and here's the original Kotaku article.

Personally, I was extremely obsessed with Doom 4 and how it would look and play when it was announced back in August (or September) of 2008, but time and lack of information caused my interest in Doom 4 started to die off. With all the Call of Dooty: Doom Ops/Modern Doomfare/Doom Ops and the like, as well as nothing but supposed hype, and now the BFG Edition (which should have been Doom 3: Pea Shooter Edition), I was anxious to see how Doom 4 would turn out. With Doom 4 now being "rebooted" because it turned out to be exactly the thing it was parodied for, I now seem to have gotten a new spark of hope. And the fact that Matt Hooper is now the creative director instead of Tim Willits (who IMO, was driving Id Software into a dork age) really seems to help the situation.

However, since Bethesda is expecting Doom 4 to be as financially successful as Skyrim, now I'm afraid that if Doom 4 doesn't deliver financially, Bethesda will have no choice but to call it quits and have Id Software finally drop the axe on one of their flagship franchises, as well as completely clean house and turn Id Software into an "Id-Tech-r-Us".

Not only that, the Doom community seems to be completely divided on this, with some saying that "it'll finally get back to demons and shotguns", whereas others cried out that Doom 4 will be "just another mediocre shooter", and some are even saying "R.I.P. Id Software" and going on and on about how much "their new games suck", how "Quake 2 was the last good game", etc.

Because it's getting rebooted, this will either be monumentally idiotic, killing the Doom franchise and Id Software along with it, or it will be the one game that restores Id Software to its glory.

Thoughts on this?

We'll see. I'm skeptical about Doom 4 since id was acquired by Bethesda, but if the team can work on it without too much interference from its parent company it should turn out okay.
Edit: Rage was pretty good. Maybe that is a sign of what Doom 4 could be like.

Doom 4 will be financially successful, Doom is a great brand; slap that name on any piece of shit and it will sell well.

I'm skeptical. Very. id's a great company but the gaming industry seems to have changed too much for another Doom game to be successful. I believe it'll either be a flop or just another modern shooter, just with demons. Graphics tech sounds cool but the gameplay is what matters and I haven't seen much of that floating around recently.

I just kind of hope that the game at least sticks with the quality that DOOM 3 brought to the table. But I'm kind of in the same boat as everyone else. High hopes and low expectations.

ID Software will still deliver a great game regardless of its parent company... ID always delivers (I've not played RAGE so I can't comment on that game).

At the rate ID is going, we probably wont expect another doom for at least another 4 years. With their team being so disjointed and radical compared to what they were back in the 90s and even early 2000s, I expect that Doom 4 will come out to be a dissapointment. Doom 3 was nice and a little scary but it just didn't feel like doom for the sake that the game moved too slow, the amount of mosters made the game kinda easy and the Multiplayer was just crap. The BFG edition just made it worse.

Overall, ID needs a bigger and MUCH better staff than what they've got right now. Lets just hope that Doom 4 comes out in the first place. I don't expect much from them other than to put the classic doom feel back into Doom 4.

I believe I am just going to buy doom for the hell of it if it plays similar to Doom 1, 2 or 3, Honestly I don't care it seems like Id and bethesda is trying their hardest to produce something for the fans, and look at Call of duty, they release another call of duty within literally a year, look at bioshock infinite, yeah it took some time to produce but the outcome was an extremely beautiful game (although it didn't take as long as Doom 4 is taking it's time.) yes it might turn out to be shit like Duke nukem forever, but look on the bright side bethesda (although very glitchy, still a lot of fun to play) and Id have both produced great games Id has created a game that a lot of people are still playing today.

While I am disappointed I have to wait longer for Doom 4, it was the right decision. I'd rather have them re-start the project and organize their staff proper to improve on the quality of the game rather than release a stale product that would have alienated their fanbase.

Quake 2 the last good iD Software game? Not a chance. Doom 3 was different sure, but is it really bad because it wasn't similar to the older games? For what Doom 3 was, I really enjoyed it. It was fun killing the demons and I loved exploring the levels. Doom 3 was for sure not as great as Doom 1 or 2, but it sure as Hell wasn't bad.
I also enjoyed RAGE as well. Aside from texture-popping and the lack of a final boss, it was a fun game. Killing enemies felt awesome, the wingsticks were fun to use, and the I really enjoyed the multiplayer. I still can't believe they didn't have any FPS deathmatch, but the vehicular combat and co-op missions were well done.

iD Software may not be the company it once was, but I still have high hopes for Doom 4.

Actually I did have fun with rage, but it certainly didn't 'wow' me. It's unfortunate that Borderlands beat them to the punch with the release, funnily enough, Rage development started first.

I don't know about you people apparently just ignoring the fact that Doom 3 was innovative, pushed the limits of gaming and very memorable, but if they pull something like that off again I'd be very happy.

The major flaw with Doom 3 was that it lacked a proper co-op. Co-op is what sells games, to be honest. The highest selling games on the market are usually some AAA bland-ass shooter, or a game made by a company you've never heard of before that happened to be a co-op game. Look at games like Halo and Gears, while they may have gotten more "CoD like" as they progressed, their original designs involved solid co-op campagins with minimal scripting, and maximum focus on shooting down enemy after enemy, as well as solidly balanced multiplayer with innovative features. That's what Doom 4 needs to be a huge success on the market and for it to warrant even further sequels down the road.
They also need to stop worrying themselves with trying to "push the boundaries of hardware limitations." Look what that got them with Rage, a generic linear shooter hiding behind an open world facade with tons of technical problems. At this point in computer hardware, it takes longer to develop the assets than it does to build the engine to run them, because people are too focused on doubling the texture resolution and losing a half-million or more potential customers who would have loved to buy the game and run it.

every doom game is innovative and make the way of fps, they can take 2 years more if they make a epic fps that will live for 10 or more years like olds doom

Thoughts? Excactly as yours Archon, with the exception that I didn't know who was the creative director and so if you said that you're happy with Hooper, I'm happy too.

Yes it's a reboot so we have just to wait and see how the things will go, surely to having it developed for the next generation of consoles is a nice thing: this means a new idtech probably, or a very enhanced version of the idtech5 which is a desirable thing since the idtech5 wasn't that great (in my opinion, it wasn't as good as the cry engine 3 at least) because we know that id has always distinguished itself for the nice graphic of its games.

All in all, I have new hopes and I'm not fussed if the release date has to be announced again, better a good product tomorrow than rotten eggs today, right?
