Chex Pack P16-3.2

#1

Post by jwaffe » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:52 am

Chex Skulltag Pack (working title)

Latest version of this mod: P16-3.2:
http://www.ifocserv.net/ftp/wads/ChexPackP16-3.2.pk3

NOTE: All versions of this mod after ChexSTPackP15-7 (7/29/2011) will set their own DMFLAGS as needed.

IRC Channel

irc://irc.zandronum.net/IFOC

Come here if you want to request a server, or if you want to play and there isn't anyone in the server.

Zandronum servers:

<[IFOC] Server>: Chex Pack Duel
<[IFOC] Server>: Chex Pack Zorchmatch
<[IFOC] Server>: Chex Pack CTF

Brand new weapons: Zorch Gloves (slot 1, melee), CL Zorcher (slot 2), Freezing Zorcher (slot 5)

Weapons ported from Chex Quest Arena: Ultra rapid zorcher (ST minigun replacement), Zorch launcher (ST grenade launcher replacement), and Liquid Zorcher (ST BFG 10k replacement, not used yet)

The minizorchers, propulsors, freezing propulsors, and bootsporks can all be dual wielded.

IWAD - Chex Quest 3 V1.4: http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ChexQuest3.zip

It must be this exact IWAD, or the game will not work. If in doubt, update. There are subtle changes from the earlier versions of the IWAD. Zandronum doesn't warn you about the wrong IWAD, so if you get an error running my mod, try re-downloading chex3.wad.

It only runs on skulltag (and Zandronum). I have a zDoom compatible version as well, but I rarely release it. I will release it more often when I have single player missions.

Map list for P16-3.2:

Notes about the maps in this mod:

ZM (Zorchmatch) maps

These are the oldest maps in the pack, they tend to be rather flat and rely more on reaction time than anything else, except for the later ones.

These are easy to play, very few tricks in these maps.

Duel maps:

These maps are designed to make the player think carefully and dodge quickly, these maps have a learning curve. Some of them play like what you would expect maps in Duel32 to play like, and some of them require a completely different strategy. An interesting challenge, every map plays uniquely.

CTF maps:

These maps are my most recent maps. CTF01 and CTF02 are rather small with a lot of cover, and require less teamwork than the other maps.

However, these maps play well even with unbalanced teams.

CTF03 was the first real experiment; From this map on I decided to force players to take a different route out of the flag room than in, which causes most of the fighting to happen within the bases. CTF04 is similar but has much more space between flags.

CTF05 requires the most teamwork of any map. It is almost annoying to play in 1v1, but it is ideal for 2v2 or higher.

CTF06 is a much more open map design, it doesn't have very many walls that block your view

New version out -- P16-1 http://www.wuala.com/jwaffe/Hosted/ChexPackP16-1.pk3/

Contains 5 new duel maps!

** This version is not made for Zandronum, so you will need skulltag_data.pk3 and skulltag_things to play it, I will work on Zand compatibility after there is a stable version of the engine out.

DUEL09 : Major Fault by 75

Image

Commentary on this map:

Difficult, fast paced, and quite strange looking, though the strange appearance matches the sort of wild gameplay this map offers, with teleporters you can use to dodge in 3 dimensions because they do not slow you down.

DUEL10 : Sweltering Spiral by 75

Image

Commentary on this map:

A moderate paced map, with locations designed for each weapon, there are some areas where a weapon is better than others. Several shortcuts can allow you to get an advantage over your opponent if you learn how to use them well.

DUEL11 : Consilium by 75

Image
Commentary on this map:

Inspired by the old vanilla Doom DM/Duel map Uroborous, this map has the same sort of layout, it's simple layout is easy to navigate and it has a forgiving layout with a lot of cover, good for beginners.

DUEL12 : Mountain Bungalo by QuadrumpusGuy

Image
Commentary on this map:

It's a lot smaller than it looks, this map forces you to move quickly to avoid your opponents' CL zorcher and zorch launcher attacks, though if you are clever you will find that safety is never really far away if you get in trouble, you will need to think quickly to realize where you can go though. After you avoid his or her attempts to zorch you, it's best to turn around for a counterattack, using an alternate path.

DUEL13: Mysterious Lab by 75

Image

Commentary on this map:

Somewhat inspired by Doom E1M2 and Doom E1M4, this map is slow paced and complicated, talking place in a abandoned, damaged lab. There are many ways to play this map, and a lot of room for creativity, listen carefully to the sounds your opponent makes in the map (from opening doors, using lifts, etc.) to find where he or she is, and act accordingly to succeed.

The new Duel hub is not done yet, but it is being worked on.

Quadrumpusguy is working on Episode 4, E4M1-E4M5, E4M7, and the two bonus levels are playable and included in this pack, if you would like a preview.

New version out, P16-2, this one works with the stable build of Zandronum without skulltag_data or skulltag_actors.pk3

http://www.wuala.com/jwaffe/Hosted/ChexPackP16-2.pk3/

It also has a new duel map, DUEL14 : Naval Bunker

Image

It's a very hard to navigate map but it is quite fun once you learn it, some very interesting BFG tactics can be used in this map.

Also the [IFOC] Servers all host on Zandronum now

New version - Chex Pack P16-3.2

This version has some gameplay tweaks for pvp, and some new maps.

I also modified CTF01 and CTF02 to remove some unused paths, and I changed the bridges in CTF05 to make it easier to see through them.

The gameplay changes make it so that the spoon, rapid zorcher, and bootspork(s) are much, much, more powerful only when used against other players, which means that these changes will not effect co-op/single player at all.

3 new duel maps:

DUEL02: "Sandy's Pizza Parlor" (Zorch! moved to DUEL33 for technical reasons),

Image

DUEL15: "The Chef's Secret Base",

Image

and DUEL16: "Vexation"

Image

and one new CTF map:

CTF06: "IFC Research and Development"

I was just wondering.. Is ChexQuest 3 released to the Public? I would think you would still have to pay for it or something. I know its a touchy subject to be talking about IWads, but I just wanna know. And if it is Public, I will Mirror it for ya.

Chex3.wad, as well as chex.wad and chex2.wad are all free to download and distribute.

Also, another mirror would be nice. For some reason, wadhost can't seem to find my ftp, even if I specifically point sv_website to http://www.ifocserv.net/ftp/wads/

(if anyone knows why that is, please let me know)

A couple new maps are in the works but unfortunately I haven't really found the time to finish them.

EDIT: if you want you can try this

http://www.ifocserv.net/ftp/chexpack/Ch ... 4_2043.pk3

it's an alpha version, new maps are called FZM01 and FZM02; FZM02 isn't done and it's kind of goofy looking but it plays well. They're Zorchmatch maps though.

I grew up on Wolf3d, Doom, and Chex, I just loved FPS games when I was young. It's kind of cool that kids are still interested in low res games like chex in 2014.

In case you don't know there's an extra map... E5M20 is a pretty decent survival map and I found it kind of fun in LMS too.

Yeah he would see me playing other wads and he showed a big interest around 2 years old. I just didn't want him to have possible nightmares or piss off the wife so Chex Quest seemed like a good choice. He would play it on my lap, but we call it "Boogies" because they're green and look like Boogers to him. :-) We play mostly single player or invasion. Since then I've built him his own linux PC desktop next to mine he plays on.

Lately I've been trying to load different wads on top of Chex Pack P16-3.2. So far the Metroid Dreadnought wad on top is pretty fun mishmash!

Anyhow thanks for the info, appreciate it.

This looks fan-friggin-tastic, looking forward to trying them online!

EDIT: Didn't notice how old this was, but still, not sure how something so cool slipped past me. Glad this was bumped!
