If I remember correctly, when the shareware version of Doom was first uploaded onto a server for download, the server crashed from too many download requests. When else has that ever happened, for the shareware no less?

You are very correct. I remember trying to download it myself, to absolutely no success whatsoever. Not one server worked. Then I bought an OEM CD version, which was buggy as hell. After that I tried copying it from friends via zipped files - didn't work either since in those days one was restricted to the plastic fantastic floppy disks. But when I finally sat down and got it going and heard that sweet midi music.. it was love from first sight. Alas! Not one game since 1993 has ever come close to the magic of DOOM.
