People who dislike 'Bronies' and 'Furries'

#1

Post by Puhax » Tue Dec 04, 2012 9:56 pm

I notice that there are many people here who hate this stuff.
How many of you in here actually hate it, and why do you hate it, exactly?

Keep it civil, alright?

In all honesty, I don't see a problem with the show per se or people watching it, however it has come to my attention that some groups of people under the flag of "bronies" or anything of sort become overly aggressive and start acting inappropriately in certain situations (like once in a SNS), though that probably goes for any overly huge fanbase of a TV show or game. Nothing we can do about it, though I think I've already developed a bad prejudice regarding these groups.

It's quite fascinating that you of all people created this thread considering what you just said here:
Accelerator wrote: I get that this is the Off-topic area of the forum and all, but I really don't get what's the point in posting a thread about this, specially when it clearly is to find people with the same interests. I don't know, if I wanted to do something like that, then I'd just look for people who have related stuff on their user info and PM them, or make an IRC channel about it and wait for it to flood.

Or do the right thing and go to a site dedicated to people who watch this. I'm sure you'd have a better time talking about this shit in one of those sites than in here.
This thread fits this quote almost precisely and all you need to make it perfect is to insert negation before certain words.

Then again I can see how you're trying to make a point by putting this thread into existence.

Exactly. I don't think just one post that is likely to be ignored will be enough to make the point. A new thread, on the other hand...

Its not the topic that pisses people off, it's how people bring it up all the time and use it obnoxiously everywhere. Combined with being an 8 year old show for little girls (though objectively theres nothing wrong with liking such things), it's a recipe for disaster.

Well, at least he didn't attempt to troll or anything like other people (Myself included) had. And with that being said, even after I had posted for the shits and giggles, I'm gonna go ahead and just post one little thing here on the topic of 'Bronies' and 'Furries'.

Why? Just...why? I mean, it's all good if you watch it and are not really an avid fan about it and all, but seriously, just like people should hate it and move along about the whole thing is one thing, but shouldn't you guys be doing the same? It's cool and all that you guys love a show for kids, or have your own other reasons for liking it because story, 'I can relate', or even the whole 'It allows me to escape from reality' excuse. I mean, seriously? Who cares.

It's really obnoxious to see people rubbing the living shit out of 'Oh I'm going to show people my FANTASTIC, GREAT, LOVE for <whatever thing/horse/being here>' and then expecting people to not get annoyed by it at all. I mean, god-damn this is almost as bad as the whole anime fiasco that Skulltag had a few year(s) back and the turnout was the same. No one really cared, but they were just tired of seeing animes all over a freakin' Doom port. But hey, it's cool, I don't mind if people like MLP. That's great and all. I'm not saying they should 100% keep it to themselves, but god-damn, stop being so fucking obnoxious about it too.

I see a very beautiful symmetry here. I'll try to be more abstract here as this doesn't just apply to bronies or whatever. Just as the fans (or fanatics) flood the Internet and try to insert their "Thing" everywhere and into everything (however that may sound), there are also anti-fans (or haters) who do the exact opposite. The anti-fans fight and complain about the "Thing". Basically both parties are doing the same thing; they just stand at opposite sides. If you could "negate" a person on one side you would most likely get a perfect match on the other one.

I agree that elitism and self-entitlement are prevalent problems on the internet.

Just going to repost this here:
  • people have a right to have opinions, and to be offended by whatever irks them, just like how people have a right to feel any other emotion
  • being offended does not make you special; it does not give you special powers, it does not allow you to be protected from second hand insults and inflamed sensitivities
  • no one has the right to not be offended; people can't claim they have a right to not be offended when freedom of speech is prevalent
  • nobody will ever be granted special rights simply because they are offended
  • people shouldn't purposely try to offend others
  • no one should make a mountain out of a molehill, etc
I'm just glad that people are actually articulating why they have a problem with some of these issues, or at least quoting someone expressing what they have issues with, as opposed to the lazy posts in the other "brony" thread that basically equate to saying "I just don't like this" over and over in various ways.
If people like or don't like something, that's cool.
It's also cool if people can express their like or dislike of something in a more civil (or at least a frustrated but non-inflammatory) manner.

I don't really care what fandom you are or aren't a part of.

The problem isn't exclusively bronies, but rather all sorts of wildly popular hivemind communities that emphasize fan contribution and development--such as TVTropes, Ponies, Homestuck, Touhou, Encyclopedia Dramatica, etc. You get the people who want to shoehorn it in to everything and get obsessed with intimate details, trying to figure out how things work on a minute level and how they can best represent it because they want to expand on it. Then start using its terms in everyday speak.
The problem also isn't exclusively them, either. Then you get the people on the opposite side who flip their lid at any single mention of it. You draw a skin as your first post and you get mountains of posts dogpiling on you for "forcing it" onto them. You use an avatar and/or name of something you like and get pounded about how your fandom is bad and you should feel bad for being a part of it, even if you never mention a single word of it in your posts.

It's a double-sided issue, I think, with some big problems on both sides.

From what I've read, a lot of you have really valid points. Yes, bronies and haters can be as equally as annoying by spreading the fandom everywhere on youtube and message boards.
But to say that only bronies do that is an understatement. Every fanbase does this. Even us Doomers are guilty of the same annoyances bronies cause. Just like the brony fandom, we create fanart, music remixes, new mods, and fanfiction (Yes, there's Doom Fanfiction.). Just like the bronies, we have haters that call Doom a shitty, pixelated mess of a game that shouldn't be played because it's old. I'm sure in other message boards in the internet, you can probably find threads related to Doom.

So in the end, it's nothing but a cycle. You have the fans, and you have the haters. Both groups will argue against each other, annoying the ones that aren't a part of either group. This isn't just a Brony issue, it's an issue for everything. Star Wars VS. Star Trek, Lego VS. Megabloks, Xbox VS. PS3, Battlefield VS. COD, the list goes on.

Just accept the fact that for everything we love, they'll be people that will hate it, and vice versa. It's a battle that can't be won.

Here's where it's at for me: I'm all for you doing your own thing, whatever it may be; everyone should have a personal interest that they can call their own. HOWEVER, there is a limit to what I consider normal and civil. I couldn't care less about "bronies" in the conventional sense that they have a fad that they like, but we're talking about adult men watching a show that was clearly intended for a younger more feminine age group. I would like to think on psychological level that this is not correct male behavior for adults and could be a result of a chemical imbalance in their brain. Not because of their love for ponies, but to the extremists that display an unhealthy fetish for inter-species copulation.

I don't even think it's about horses that make this show appealing. I believe it to be a subconscious desire for women and I'd like to see where the show's popularity/ ratings would be if all the characters were changed to men and drawn to more accurate-horse-specifications. It's more about bronies themselves than the actual show. I get extremely irritated with their constant need to flood everything with ponies. Why do you think Christians are so hated in parts of the world. Like Religious fucks, MLP fans have a uncanny talent for pushing their shit on everything. Almost any famous meme will have a MLP counterpart, as if, ponies some how make it better.

I remember asking a few "bronies" on other forums and websites what exactly makes it so special for them. The responses I got were predictable & expected. Most of whom were stating that it teaches good life lessons, and that it gives them an escape from the "cold world" as we know it. Some stating that because they watch it, they're comfortable with their sexuality. If this really is the consensus when it comes to MLP I have to comment at how silly that sounds. Im basing this around the fact that some odd 20+ year old me tell me they get away from the worlds problems through a kids show and learn morals that most presumably learn at an adolescent age, not 18.

This is why I have little respect for MLP fans and the show. Not because it's about ponies, or that some people enjoy the show, but because of the twisted fucks & shitbags who are overly obsessed enough to associate EVERYTHING with ponies. I feel like it is potentially breeding a weak generation that won't be able to handle the hardship this world will throw. I mean if people get up in arms about people bashing MLP over a forum, I hate to think what will happen face to face. Even more so, wouldn't it sound awkward in a job interview for a 22 year old man to say he enjoys MLP? Just a few examples of how the real world just isn't ready for this yet.

I don't like MLP, and I think you have some subconscious issues you need to resolve if you're a die hard fan, but I will treat you with respect if you can keep it in line, and be respectful about it. This means not talking about it at every opportunity you get, forcing me to watch the show, and repeatedly insinuating how fad X would be better with ponies.

The part I can't stand is when they go about trolling everyone, and then pronounce that the community sucks for hating them. It's like... you brought this on yourselves. Deal with it.

The whole "bronies"/"furries"/etc labels never really appealed to me for numerous reasons.

I think I'll link this relevant YouTube clip:

Ok. Let me break this down. Yes, some other communities (keyword: SOME) create fanart, some other communities create remixes and some others create fanfiction. However, I don't fucking see Doom fans, or Metroid fans, or Fighting game fans plastering their goddamn fandom on every fucking community they inhabit or every fanart they make. Sure they might make an avatar or a banner relating to it but that's about it. It's not shoved in the face of everything they do. Most (Read: Nearly all) bronies and such proudly display it as some sort of fucking banner on everything they do. They have to cross over things that don't make any fucking sense together just for the sake of having their precious ponies there (I understand the Metroid community has done some crossovers but they make sense i.e. Metroid and Halo, both are set in space, have heavy sci fi elements, etc.)

On the topic of haters, yes, there are retard 12 year olds that think that a game is made by the graffics it displays, but most of the points made against Doom aren't very valid and usually are a matter of nitpicking and opinion. Now most of the MLP hatred doesn't come from the show itself, but rather, it's community. I have good reason that CoD wouldn't be despised so much if it wasn't released every fucking year or it's community wasn't full of retard kids, edgy teenagers and such other scum. The hatred of the series comes directly from it's fucking community, you guys asked for it, and now you have to go through the backlash.
nightshade94 wrote: A mature community doesn't care if you love ponies. I fucking love ponies.
This little quote is a perfect example of what I'm talkin bout Willis. See, who the fuck needs to know you like ponies? Who wanted to know? Did anyone ask for it? Was the thread even about that in the first place? Considering the amount of hatred bronies and their ilk get in the web, you should probably have a good idea that most people WILL react negatively, whether you like it or not. It's the equivalent of being a girl in an online game and demanding for respect when things don't go your way, you're stepping blindly into a virtual minefield buddy.

I would suggest looking at a much larger fan community.

Isn't the FGC big enough? I'm not counting THOSE other autistic communities such as the Sonic community and the Furry community. The reasons to why they are hated are pretty much the same as the Bronies.
