What is, for you , A mature community ?
RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
Every staff member uses their best judgment when moderating or making decisions..sure you were warned for it but it's not like you weren't given a reason..(it says why you were).
With that said, I would say this community is more on the mature side (but not by too much). The trash is a semi-decent gauge of the maturity level of the forum, but at the same time it's not THAT decent since you can see there are certain topics that were in the off topic split there (because some staff thought it was not off-topic worthy(but then begs the question..how does something meant for off topic not off topic..)), some topics created because of staff action (the Igor thread and splits..) and some questions sent there without being answered for some reason. However, the basis of what goes there does not change usually. You can look away from the trash and find many useful and informative posts, even about off topic stuff. But when you equate IRC and In-game behavior, it definitely changes things...Despite this, I think that the community is still more on the mature side, how else would we be able to sustain some of these topics when some have been a little split or not split at all?
Also any posts after this one that aren't on topic will be split.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
Actually compared to most of the other forums I have seen, this one is nice and tidy and the people here are rather more mature than others, atleast you don't get alot of stuff like "Oh that Wad is crap." instead it is more constructive criticism like "You know you could really improve this wad by adding a certain script called ____, also some things don't suit the wad having a random mix of weapons that were 3D ripped mixed with hand-drawn sprites, this map wad could be better if it had some ______ added to it"
To me I see this forum as mature, and i've experienced being a mod for a forum where the admins just don't care and would rather throw people away than keep them.
EDIT: I apologise for going off topic, looks like this'll get split.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
To be fair, there are quite a few "13 year old kiddies" in our community. It's just that most of them don't post here on the forums. But you can find them frequenting ZH/WDI/BrutalDoom servers, with ingame names like "stinkpickle" or "Xx_EmoKitsune_xX", spamming annoying chat binds, quoting old memes that they found out about last week on 9gag, crying "OMG HAX D:" and voting to ban you for "movement hacks" because they don't know what SR50 is, etc etc etc. Whether these players truly ARE 13 or whether they simply act it is uncertain. So for all intents and purposes, they're 13.
I've found that the average player IQ varies greatly from server to server. This is a double-edged sword. It's good if you already have a sense for where the retards play and if you already have an idea of what you want to play before opening Doomseeker. It's bad if you're new to our port and decide to join a random server just to play. I've seen newbies get flogged by trolls and elitist neckbeards when all they wanted to do was just play and have some fun. It's truly disgusting and it gives our port a bad image.
And yes. There is a huuuuuuuge difference in maturity between the Zandronum forums and what happens ingame. Why? Well ... Act like a retard on the forums and the consequences will be swift and absolute. You'll eventually just get banned/purged/whatevered from the forums. Act like a retard in a server, and weeeell ... it's a different story. Depending on the cluster/host, you could either get away with it, get kicked, temp-banned, banned from that cluster, or (very rarely, and only if you're a repeat offender with plenty of evidence) get masterbanned. But the thing is, not many people will see that. Act like a dick on the forums/IRC and your crimes are there for everyone to see. Be a dick in a server and your consequences are pretty much a dice roll.
I realize that I might not seem like the best spokesperson for "maturity". I'll admit that I haven't always been the most mature person in this community. Especially in the past. I was a massive furfag with a snobby know-it-all attitude. (And come to think of it ... I was around the age of 13-14 at that time ...) But I'd like to think that I've since then grown up, and I'd like to set a good example for the next generation of ... Zandronomers?
Anyways. Just thought I'd spill my thoughts for possible discussion.

I think if people can have an open mind and not go up in arms when someone disagrees with their post, then very elaborate and enriching discussions can be held; but people have to leave their ego at the door. For me a mature community is one that can act responsible & accordingly in any given situation while maintaining a healthy relationship regardless of differences.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
Even seen the packaging for Call of Duty? Really, if age restrictions were properly enforced, the internet and multiplayer games would be a different place...Ænima wrote: Well, according to the packaging, all of the Doom games are rated "M" for "Mature".
That means that all Doom communities are inherently mature ... Right?
By comparison, I love the Doom community: Zdoom Forum, Doomworld Forum and the Zandronum Forum are all descent places with a lot of kind people that are generally good community members.
The game servers are generally good to be around too. Of course there are certain mods which attract a lot of drama and lame behaviour, but especially the more complex or long running games (Zdoom Wars comes to mind) generally work very well.
All in all, a combination of fanatic modders, gamers and a self regulating environment works in it's benefit. Most people in our community realise that 'we are it' and there are no more Doom communities in this world other then us*, the last stronghold of our particular gaming taste.
It might be the result of having to fend for our self. There is no AAA studio behind our back making the rules and saying what is good and what not. We make the rules our self and I too would like to have a basic sense of order in public places.
It actually shows a nice comparison with apartment housing versus your own house. If the bricks are yours, you suddenly care a lot more about them then when they are build and controlled by a corperate non-person.
So, I have good confidence in this server and although we might still be a little unforgiving to new players (see the whole MM8DM situation), by comparison with other communities, this is a very good place to be around.
* And yes, I don't like Zdaemon, at all....

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
Quantifying maturity objectively is an impossible task, subjectively I'd think common sense moves from the entire populace intertwined with responsibility for actions that are autonomously handled (or at least self-regulated) in a non-administrative setting would for me at least be a mature community. This way there is no entanglement with the 'age' factor which I'm sure all of us would deem irrelevant based on varying members in the community and their actions.

Indeed, most of the internet is being ravaged by imature people...

I agree that most 13 year olds just rage in laughter thinking they're classic. Although I say a few exceptions exist, such as I. While I do joke around, I tend to be serious most of the time. I believe a good moral fiber lies between a firm maturity and some satire when appropriate. Hopefully I don't sound like an attention whore, being a 13 year-old doomer (I have a friend ((Wildweasel, you know how it is)) that is a total attention hoarder). Anyways, what kind of child would interested in Doom? I'd blame all the epic violence mods; what what's wrong with my generation!
P.S. 9-gag? Lol.

What is fueling the fire is making posts in this thread that refer to events from this same thread. This thread is not a vehicle to push your personal agenda under the flag of "maturity."Qent wrote: If anyone has a problem with moderators, this is not the thread to discuss it.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
I as of so far haven't encountered any nuisances, but I like to lurk in the forum trash sometimes and well I laugh at some of the peoples idiocy, I cannot say that I am mature, but I cannot say that anyone else is immature there might of been sometimes I've seen a post that offended a majority of people but I have always tried to ignore it, I do not like getting into those types of situations.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
I'd say that a mature community is one that accepts the limitations and faults of its members and balances its moderation and insanity. I'd say for the most part, this place isn't full of whiny insane retards that complain every time they get banned for dropping the N-bomb. So in short, we're okay around here in my book.
RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
A mature community for me would be a group of people that understand and accepts or topicly argue against each others' views on anything (that isn't extreme or disgusting) without going too low as to use profanity or name-calling. This includes views on the different games and mods on Zandronum and anything doom-related, as well as more personal topics like religion or, indeed, the fact that they watch mlp or not. I for one don't, but neither do I attack them with insults.
A mature community would also mean no showing off or making a serious issue when it comes to competition, for example covering up a loss in ctf with an obviously ridiculous excuse or "calling out" someone in a duelling match when their feelings were hurt. Of course if it's a bet on skill then these duelling matches are justified and a sensible option to settle between the two individuals whether or not the challeger is better or not.

RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
A mature community is a community that is not stupid.
I could write a real whole lot of text here, but, really, it all boils to the fact that a mature community is a community that is not stupid.
Too bad that such a thing defies one or maybe even more of the laws of Internet, and as such is physically impossible.
One can dream, though.

A mature community is one which doesn't scream "SELL-OUTS" or "GREEDY FUCKERS" every time Doom gets rereleased.
RE: What is, for you , A mature community ?
Doomworld would be an example of a predominantly mature community in my eyes.

Go to the GameFAQs forum, browse to the Call of Duty: Black Ops II (Xbox 360) forum.
See that? That is most certainly not a mature community. So if it's not that bad, I can dig it.
