Doom 3 BFG edition

#1

Post by one_Two » Sun Jul 29, 2012 1:36 pm

Read about this the other day, it's being made by bethesda so I don't know what it'll be like. Big news is there will be new maps, so the first official new doom maps in about 8 years is pretty exciting. Also the graphics have been updated. Anyone looking forward to this?

Jury's still out on "updated graphics," but hopefully it will look better. Personally, I'm hoping they added in the engine optimizations Raven Software made for Quake 4.

Before anyone cries "They're just re-releasing an 'HD remake' to make more money," they're actually earning it with this. They're fixing some problems a lot of players had, adding new maps and updating it in general.
Enough teach you'd.

Then there's the die-hard fans who don't like the new changes (read: armor-mounted flashlight) simply because it's not Doom (3). Also, there seems to be heavy emphasis on the console releases, which may imply that the PC release is a console port. (Though maybe not.)

The trailer does make it seem like it's all about the console releases but I guess most adverts are now days. I have good hopes for it, just don't know how much input Id is having,

I think it's being for the PC PS3 and Xbox 360, although it will be more expensive for the latter 2.

Talking with Fluffles, he told me you can pre order the game for £13.99 here, although this is for only people living in GB I think http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doom-BFG-Editio ... 387&sr=8-3

I'm looking forward to it though. I actually enjoyed the horror genre of the original Doom 3, but asking other classic doom fans, they prefer the action fps that Doom 1 and 2 are about. Doom 3 BFG Edition is based more on that action, rather than the horror style, so I think it will attract more of a 'doom' audience.

Also they are giving away free copies of Doom 1 and 2 with the purchase of this game, this could even be an opportunity to bring a new generation of players to this port, with the right advertisment of course. Just and idea...

Indeed, hopefully it will give them the actuall wad and not code it into the game (if this is at all possible?). Though I imagine doom 1 and 2 will load from the doom3 bfg game itself.

I'm looking forward to getting the BFG Edition mainly since it is coming out for Playstation 3. It's nice that they're remastering Doom3 and releasing Doom1 and 2 along with it.

Personally, I hope that that reason they're not really advertising the PC version is because it might be a free update a la Ultimate Doom. (Although I would understand not having Doom/Doom2 included with a free update.)

If they were updating it, they would probably be doing so via Steam (since almost all of their games are on there) and there isn't any news about a Steam update. Although I think that would be the wrong thing to do because then you wouldn't have a choice in the matter.

It would be the coolest thing in the world if they made BFG Edition maps for Doom 2! Well, one can dream...

I can't wait to get this.
I just hope a good amount of people will play multiplayer on PS3.

I'll buy it just because Doom3 multiplayer on PS3.

Also, Doom3 looked sexy on the old Xbox back then, I bet it'll look 5x better on PS3/Xbox.

I'm not too bothered about this since I already have Doom 3 on the PC, although it's nice that they're bringing it out on consoles and adding new content.

Pre-ordered mine off amazon today. Wouldn't usualy buy a physical game but I'm making the most of amazon prime that I don't remember paying for :/ The game costs £14, which is pretty good.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doom-BFG-Editio ... 109&sr=8-5

Under "key features":
"Stunning 3D Visuals: DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil and ‘The Lost Mission’ have all been optimized in 3D for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, further immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. "

I wouldn't call the original a horror masterpiece, but yeah, there you go.

So the first doom release since 2005 (only counting main releases) is coming in two days! I am quite excited especially as there will be new maps. The last expansion and of course the first two dooms will be with it (Yet to know if the .wads will be accessible, I presume they will be). I've had mine of pre-order for a while so yeah, should be good :)

This is a bump and I'm aware of it, but it's relevant since the BFG Edition's actually released since the last post.

So yeah. Picked up the PS3 one today for 39.99$ CAD. Played it a bunch. Honestly? It's alright but I don't think id is particularly proud of this port. If you have other ways of playing D3, just stick with that but otherwise, it's not a bad way to experience D3.

So it includes Doom 1, 2, 3, and RoE. And some bonus levels for each, which stand pretty strong on their own. I want someone to get em working here.

The Doom 1 and 2 ports are done well enough, it felt a lot like playing PSX Doom control wise, only that the two thumbsticks aim and move now, and the D-pad quick-selects weapons. Played some Coop Survival and Deathmatch, it was actually great fun and there was a whole ton of people online. Ditto with Doom 3 itself. Good old Green, Red, Brown, and Indigo Doomguys running amok blowing each other up on classic Doom 1 and 2 maps, just the way it should be.

A warning though: a problem you will face with these ports is well, remember Skulltag aiming way back then? That's in full effect here. Not really any lag compensation I could notice, I missed a whole lot of Doom3 SSG and Chaingun shots because I needed to aim ahead for my 120 ping shots to land on target. Other than that, the experience was fun when I had a good connection (woo wireless). [EDIT]: Turns out it was a misunderstanding: Bullets actually do hit if you aim at targets, but the actual registration will be delayed. Not much different from here, honestly. Hard to tell.

The graphics are somewhat improved. Much better than the classic Xbox version, at least. Models are slightly more detailed, there's some fancy new shaders, and whatnot. Personally, I wish id asked the guys who made Sikkmod to include it in this port. But the Classic Doom ports, holy goddamn if I actually had an LCD HDTV or something instead of a CRT, I bet the colours wouldn't clip so much. The options they offer concerning graphics are minimal, just screen size, really. No brightness option, so the reds were so bright the text was actually bleeding red around it and making it hard to read. Without an HDTV, the automap was plain and simple eye raep. The map's lines aren't antialiased, combined with the overcranked saturation, making it flicker terribly on my TV. I just stopped using the map altogether since I was halfway scared it would damage my screen somehow.

Also, Doom 3's partial invis is OP. Holy shit. Also, respawning godspheres on Excavation.

I'd make a paragraph on the loading times and the thumbstick aim movement feeling awkward on Doom 3 (starts slow, then WHOAHOLYSHITACCELERATION) making it fairly difficult compounded with the lack of unlagged, but I'm pretty sure there's enough of a wall of text here [EDIT] Lower sensitivities turn out to have high acceleration values, while higher ones don't. Don't worry about acceleration BS if you're used to high-sens thumbstick aiming.

Current PSN is IAREMEDIC if you wanna hit me up for some D3 Survival or whatevs

From what I hear, a bunch of shit got censored in the copies doom2 that came with it. The Wolfenstein level being completely changed, no Nazi SS dudes, things like that. That honestly kinda bugs me a bit.

Like Medicris says, the main thing that irritates me about D3 BfG edition on PS3 is the aiming with the toggle. If a couple of lost souls come within 5 ft with you, you're basically fucked and may aswell load back to your previous save point. Especially on the veteran and nightmare difficulty, things like those and cherubs are a pain in the ass if they get close to you.

The other thing that disappointed me is the sound, especially from your weapons. The shotgun sounds like some shitty cap gun, the rocket sounds very ineffective for how big it is, and I wouldn't even consider using the pistol. I don't know about other people but when you've just sliced some imp in half with your SSG, I want the sound effects to really make you feel you've just kicked his ass back to hell.

Apart from that I was fairly satisfied with Doom3 BFG edition. Just wish we could hear something about Doom 4 ... Role on the next 8 years
