Zandronum CTF Compilation

Zandronum has the most active private scene out of any port in doom. Private sessions happen every day, clan scrims are a common occurance. Sadly ZDaemon is very inactive and the IDL is out of season (and even in season I only played one to two privs over the entire season, I wish there was more). As you can see, the IDL map pack gets heavy play time. So far they have some of the best CTF maps out there, but based on discussion with a large variety (albeit not all) of the community, we would like to see some new maps. I've gone through a ridiculous amount of CTF map packs and had to pull a large amount of strings from friends to get access to some non-uploaded map packs.

I figure what we'd do is get a compilation going without any of the additional junk in the IDL wad. The unplayed maps like 21, 23, 24...etc; could be replaced by other more favorable maps, and then additional ones can be added on after map32. Thus, I will be working with a variety of people to add on maps that are enjoyable to play and that also suit the private atmosphere.

Whether you play private or not, whether you make maps or not, you can contribute in the following ways:

If you map:
You can look at the IDL map pack and create your own map to submit.
If you've always wanted to get your map into a commonly played map pack, you will have it constantly played -- a dream that many people have sought after. Now is your chance if you manage to create a solid map.
If you decide to however, you should check out the IDL pack and make one designed for 3v3. If you play CTF you will know probably what you need to make, if not... play through the 0-20, and 26-32 to get a feel for what private players would want. Come talk to us if you want insight.
You are allowed any textures you want, try not to clone ones from the IDL map pack (use it as a resource). You can include as many textures as you want -- though try to be reasonable (use a TEXTURES lump if you're just cloning something instead of making 100 copies of it and chewing up space)

If you don't map
Make map suggestions! Find your favorite maps that would work for 3 on 3 CTF private play and recommend them here. The maps can be from any wad and there are no limitations since this is a compilation. There are no limits on the map type (it can be Zandronum with fancy features). The only wad I can tell you off the bat that won't work is Legendary CTF since the maps are pub oriented (too big). Also don't recommend ones in the IDL map pack.

When maps are submitted or recommended, we will ideally like to talk to the author about potentially updating their map. For example, if you wanted to recommend something from the i3 map pack that BlueWizard made, maybe give him a heads up you're recommending it and see if he'd like to detail it further.

When maps are recommended, they will go into a pool. I will proceed to get everyone I possibly can in the community to vote for or against the map. If the majority is in favor, it probably will get in.

In addition, if you make a map for this map pack, you are also free to submit it to the:

Zandronum newschool CTF pack:

IDL mapping contest (probably over by now but who knows):

There will be a one month period where people can submit or touch up maps. There are already 8 maps created by various individuals that have been approved for the map pack to add on to the IDL map pack. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. If you have any constructive recommendations, feel free as well to recommend.
Hopefully we can see a collaboration among the Zandronum community.

Sure, I could try to make something. Never made a ctf map before, so it'll be hard to make a map that is cool-looking and fun to play. Always open to the challange.

I can't map, but it would be nice to see some ZDECTF or Velocity CTF maps included in this ... they are very underated.

CoreCTF2 is in the final phases of its development and during the testing (in priv 3v3/4v4 scenario with good CTF players) it got quite positive feedback. If you want to take a look, I'd upload it for you (figured we should share it since we've also already submitted the beta to the IDL board).

Also, I'd like to point out, that usually when people are making compilations, they bound themselves to certain round and/or low numbers of maps (I'd guess 32 in this case). My suggestion would be to include all the good maps that are there (emphasis on "good") even if it goes over 32 maps.

And, of course, since it'll be exclusively for Zandronum, ACS-based map picking lobby would be cool so we don't have to memorize all the map numbers (or at least a lobby map with pictures with all the maps, ACS is optional I guess).

Well I've decided to have a go at mapping for this, I've more or less finished my map. The design is loosely based on the Q3A map dm17. Here is a screenshot -

Keep working on it, also keep in mind that people hate being able to snipe others with chaingun across a map, but who knows. If you're intent on submitting it, have it ready for the 1st of November and it will go through a test phase -- from there it will be decided what happens to it. Focus on the gameplay and it may be a cornerstone map of private. You should probably spectate some priv games and check out IDL maps if you haven't to see what priv players want.

It is interesting that you mention this. The majority of the maps that are not played in either IDL priv or Zan priv are on their way out. The main reason they got in to begin with is because the previous iteration of The Board did not adequately playtest the majority of the new additions for the 2012 wad. Rest assured, they will be replaced with more suitable maps and as a result there will be less junk. In the coming weeks we'll be releasing the 2013 wad so keep your eyes peeled.

I've been working on a map for this, I figured I'd go ahead and let everyone take a look.

I'm coming around for map collections today, a final compilation will happen a day after IDL2013 is released to see what hopefully good quality maps have been added by then.

If the maps play well in the next week or two of play testing, I have no issues with the authors doing map touchups if need be.

I'd like to see some EpicCTF or TLSXCTF (aside from that bowl map) be added. Both are great CTF wads that nobody seems to play anymore.

Maybe a 32in24-12 map or two?

I plan on making a quick compilation in a few days of maps from a bunch of CTF wads and see how they play. I expect some to get in from there.

Having played a bit more ctf lately I realize the map I made probably isn't the best what with it's open theme and one entry/exit routes. Still it would be nice to see it played a bit as it was still fairly fun when I played with some friends, when do you think a compilation for testing will be ready?
