Why Doom?

#1

Post by someoneelse » Sun Sep 30, 2012 9:48 pm

Well, all is explained in poll, I think. I was just wondering, since I see a lot of people too young to know Doom just from being there when it was getting popular...

My big brother introduced me to Doom on the PSX and SNES when I was about 3 or 4. I eventually bought a copy of Doom:CE for the PC and was an addict from that point forward.

My father used to play doom95 back in the day, I used to sit on his knee and watch him. It scared the shit out of me too, although I was only 3 or 4 back then though

This, really.

I play Doom for the cool mods, mainly. A game like this was considered too violent for me when I was young, and I only started getting into them a few years back. And would you believe I knew of Marathon many years before DooM? :D

And I do love classic games, but I could care less about the Spice Girls, so I chose Other.

I started with Chex Quest back in 1997 or so, but it was Legion that got me into Skulltag back in 2009 which really got me into it.

Ahh. Of course it's fun, otherwise I suppose there would be no one here. You can't see communities based around Daikatana. I mean, what was the reason you, person whose peers probably play Call of Duty or whatever youngsters play these days, decided to give it a shot?

Well, no one else admitted, even in anonymous poll, but yup, I had a crappy computer and that's how I got interested in classic games. Doom (Doom II, to be precise) was my favourite- with metal music, psychodelic colorful monsters and abstract levels I could feel like I was the marine trapped in hellish awake nightmare. Later, when I had a "real one, at least!!!" I noticed... I still like to play Doom most. You know... the marines are 2D and they jump and yell "HAHA", and some mods are like making cyberdemons shoot dildos, and some mods are millions years of work and they even can make door and circlestrafing around 50 cyberdemons and changing name to "Fucking Windows Updates" on wdi which is basically space marines derping around before-WW mansion, and clicking a switch 50 times and not being able what the fuck it does, and doom music, and I just fucking love this game.

Not too sure, I had always played it at some point or other, I remember playing the gba port allot. Although it was quake 3 that really hooked me then I've just slid back into doom, helped in part due to the ease in modding.

My cousin/uncle got me into it, a good 10 or so years ago. It's easily one of my favorite games.

Played it since the beginning of my life... Imagine a 4 years old that plays UT99 and Doom. On cheats, but still. :>

I don't remember when I started playing it, but my earliest memories are of me playing it when I was 3. I remember playing through Downtown with cheats on. XD

And heres a pic of me playing Doom 2 all those years ago. At least I think it's Doom.

Simple. Most modern shooters suck ass and are always the same, when DOOM is unique in its own way. I mean, there's so much you can do with this old damn game!

Dad's friend gave me a copy of Doom 1.8 Shareware on 3.5" disks in mid or late 1994, I couldn't play it until I had 4MB of RAM, but I soon had 8MB and a 486DX 100Mhz and Doom 2 played nicely in 1995. I eventually purchased Ultimate Doom since I never played ep2-3 and I still have that CD with me.
