Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
According to this pro guide: http://www.cdevastation.com/doom/traini ... rategy.pdf
take a look at page 6 (his page numbers), below The Three Basics topic and below on the Weapon Offset. It says that "weapons graphics are slightly more to the right, than what your actual aim is."
Does this counts in all ports: ZDaemon, Skulltag (Zandronum), Odamex as well or perhaps something is done and those weapon offsets are corrected ?
And on the next page (page 7) is the SSG swingshot, tell me your opinions about it.

I just base mine off of the crosshair.Ermac wrote: According to this pro guide: http://www.cdevastation.com/doom/traini ... rategy.pdf

I also feel that the center line of the doom character is very insignificant, especially since your pellets hitting are more or less based on the random engine.
I don't look at my sprite of the SSG to see where people are, I figure as long as they're at the middle of the screen I'm doing something right. The crosshair helps me a lot.
Overall it's a great guide, just some things on there you shouldn't use in CTF.

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
He did this tutorial a loooooong time ago. I'd like to say it applies more to ZDaemon more-so than Skulltag/Zandronum or any other port around. Not even quite sure all his methods will work on Zandro anymore. A lot of tricks that OS players used, were done on ZDaemon 1.08 and before.Ermac wrote: According to this pro guide: http://www.cdevastation.com/doom/traini ... rategy.pdf

I don't use a crosshair. I feel it out. and I noticed that I do aim with the left barrel of my gun. it's really up to you how you preceive on that matter.
RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Never noticed anything like that. Devastation's weapons seem to be broken.
RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Anything devastation makes will help you a lot aslong as you read and learn it. Crosshair is good but aslong as you can play pure os aswell then ok. Think he might of made a map01 guide aswell, check that out for anyone who can't play that map or who thinks its rubbish lol. Also on topic yeah generally it is slightly to the right. The crosshair is accurate enough as watermelon said so just keep with that, but if you wanna try it out maybe aim slightly right of the crosshair n see if your accuracy goes up. Never know!

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
I noticed a while ago that the crosshair didn't line up with the centre of the weapon sprites on ST/Zandronum. Its the same on Odamex too. I never used a crosshair on Zdaemon but I'm sure it would be the same.
I actually thought the crosshair wasn't aligned properly but looks like I've just learn another interesting thing about my beloved Doom :)

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Haha that is an interesting guide. I've already skimmed through it some time ago.
About the Offset : You probably got your answer already in these posts.
About the swingshot : I think that this does have a grain of truth, however I do not think that any 'secret calculation' is causing this.
Rather, when you do a "swingshot", you are actually activating a reflex which acts faster than normal response time, therefore you can be more accurate and respond faster to any sudden movement your opponet does, which in turn enhances shot placement.
Also, when it seems that a swingshot does higher damage than a normal shot from the same distance, you must take into consideration that movements during engagement cause this distance to vary quickly, and can make it seem that your shots hit unusually accurately over a long distance, especially if you experience minor shot delay due to ping etc.
Regardless, this guide is like a theory book for Doom, and I recommend anyone to experiment with the different techniques mentioned inside it, some of which are very common and effective.

"The theory behind the swingshot is, that if you swing your mouse really fast, then fire, the movement of the player somehow calculates into your momentum."
I'm not quite sure what he means by this, anybody care to explain?

Doom is just a point and click adventure.
RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Notice that in This video, In some parts (Namely at around the 1:00 - 1:45 mark) the player "jerks" his view toward the opponet and fires with coordination - this is the swingshot reflex that the author meant.Synert wrote: "The theory behind the swingshot is, that if you swing your mouse really fast, then fire, the movement of the player somehow calculates into your momentum."

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
I think the dude didn't realise that there's actually a three or four tic delay between hitting +attack and actually firing, and though that that "somehow calculate[d] into your [shot's angle]"Synert wrote: "The theory behind the swingshot is, that if you swing your mouse really fast, then fire, the movement of the player somehow calculates into your momentum."

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Whoever wrote this guide knows this pretty well. he explictly meant that 'swinging' your view as in a swingshot actually makes your shots tighter than if you were plaining putting your crosshair on him and timing the shot.Ijon Tichy wrote:I think the dude didn't realise that there's actually a three or four tic delay between hitting +attack and actually firing, and though that that "somehow calculate[d] into your [shot's angle]"Synert wrote: "The theory behind the swingshot is, that if you swing your mouse really fast, then fire, the movement of the player somehow calculates into your momentum."

I actually know what he's talking about, even though I'm not much of a "competitive" player.

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Got figured it out what's about weapon offsets, in the past, without crosshair, people determined center of the screen by weapon sprites and I can see clear that crosshair is aligned to the left barrel of SSG. Since we all aim with the crosshair in all modern ports that thing doesn't bother us at all.

I find the center of the screen by looking at the center of the window.

RE: Analyzing "Devastation" Doom Guide
Someone needs to confirm if swingshots did happen in 1.06 and then have someone analyze the source code for if angle momentum is factored into your damage output to confirm/deny the rumor.
