Is doom slowly dying?

#1

Post by ReBDooMine » Mon Aug 31, 2015 5:03 am

is it dying? like in zandronum browser, i expected to find tons of players but theres only 90 or 70, maybe people eventually get better pcs and stick to "high tier" games like CS GO or even COD (piece of shit) so what do you think?

how long doom multiplayer community will last?

and what keeps it alive?

Of course it's dying. Doom's "hardcore" fanbase of players who have been playing it since they were 4 are slowly getting older, with the average age being 20's to early 30's (just my guess but seems accurate at least for this community). These people still love the game but find it hard to find time between school, jobs, relationships, and some of us even have kids (gasp).

Then you have the huge flock of 11- to 15-year-olds who just discovered Doom over the past year or two because of Steam, YouTube, or Brutal Doom, and it's difficult to say how long these players will stick around before getting bored and moving on to their next big obsession.

Either way, it's thanks to the generous GZ/ZDoom/Zandro developers and the thriving mod scene that Doom is still alive today. And don't be deceived by Doomseeker's playercount, there are random surges of activity during the week and regular increases during the weekends, although at times it can be difficult to find a populated server for a mod that you're actually in the mood for.
Reinforcements: midgame Survival joining/respawning

There is a huge "invisible" portion of the Doom playerbase of which Zandronum is a small fraction of, and currently online players at any one time even smaller. If we're talking Doom online in general, yes. Most games today have an "expected lifetime" of about a year or two before online population nosedives, but Doom being 21 years old by now I'd say that curve has been very slight. Other ports like ZDaemon have experienced similar, if not more severe, losses. It's nuts that there are people who played this game online for 10 or more years in the first place, and personally isn't a thing to fret about it's an achievement on Doom's part. I have reason to believe it's going to live a whole lot longer, especially since it's been getting a steady stream of media coverage over the years.

One could argue that traditional online Doom has been "dead" here for a while, now. Hardly anything lives here but various mods (though that's the point of the port in the first place, so can't complain there).

By the end of it, don't feel sad when it's over. Smile because it happened.

I somehow feel very old, I've been playing Doom for 17 years although for the first 2 I didn't actually understand it, but yeah things will more than likely be getting evermore chaotic for me, I will probably be spending less time here as my life is progressing.

The first time I launched IDESE (the skulltag server browser a long time ago) back in 2005 there was no one on. And there were only like 25 servers all hosted in one place (Texas). If there were 20 players on at the same time, that was a big thing lol. This would never happens nowadays. There is always at least 10-30 players playing on quiet times. And on Peak times 100+. Sure Zdaemon had a bigger playerbase back then, But I think a lot of the newcomers come from outside the Doom community and not just switched from online doom port. This has everything to do with Zandronum being quite modern and is the best online port when it comes to modding abilities. Fresh mods that attract new players and modding itself are what makes Doom popular. But indeed one can argue that classic unmodded Doom is getting less popular, but that's obvious. Nobody wants to play the same shit for 21 years. And as long as the ports still feel and play as Doom, it is Doom.

high tier

modern games with nice graphics, like cs go, bf hardline etc

nowdays people only care about graphics sadly

personally, doom is around for a looong time, i think it can last for more 10 years or something

I say we look towards the future and hope the ports become even better to the point where we can use everything in 3D without worrying about things like lagg, that is what would truly make people look at this more, so long as new features keep being added to the ports I doubt that anyone would want to leave anytime soon.

Doom will never die as long as grandpa vanilla still has the motor skills to run his copy of doom95

If you ever need a boost in online players just release the next version of brutal doom gg (or 3.0)[/size]

Doom will become alive again, but only once we get Lord Igor's approval

Idk why people are obsessed with "Game is dying" not just here but even in games 3 months after they are released. The 100 players active at one time isn't always the same players. Also still think the majority of doom players play it offline.

Why do I have this feeling you're trying to troll?

On the off chance that you are actually not, I feel like you're trying to be one of those fanatics who wish the world to end, Doom IMO has a long way to go. Oh and, atari and Doom can not compare. One is a console that can easily become obsolete as technology evolves while the other is a cult classic shooter game that has many fans across the globe. And is actually not as hard to obtain. And doesn't become obsolete... Yeah you get the picture.

It's a pointless thread.

How about you play the god damn game instead of making non-sense threads about Doom's future?

I think having a tray program that checks when favorite servers are populated will solve the problem for most players. Players will not give up checking for servers they like when there is a automated program that checks if a favorite server is populated.

I can agree to the bagel horde. I didn't have much problems with zh until retardation showed it's ugly face...
