Do you use mouselook? Good idea?...

#1

Post by Manhs » Fri Nov 28, 2014 3:27 am

Hi there, i wanted know, i use mouselook because i like when i can choose the ennemy I want shoot in first, in the vertical line but some guys say, "mouselook ruins the gameplay of doom", what do you think about that?
Is it true for the new megawads ?...

Maybe i wont use mouselook anymore, except for brutal doom or others modes.....

Do you use -always- mouselook guys?

Play how you want, don't worry about how other people say is the "true" way to play Doom.
The Ranger - New class for HeXen.
ZDoom Wars - I drew some pictures.
Samsara - Some class-based mod I guess?
Metroid: Dreadnought - I am a dumb fanboy.
DemonSteele - ~come with me to anime world~

You could say that for anything, but imo to appreciate some wads no-mouselook is a good idea, as that's what they were designed for.

You can't really play doom "how it's meant to be played" if you're playing new mods.
<agaures> I'm guessing you haven't played many doom mods before huh? :p
<Zuplin> i have played master of puppets zombies doom center and a couple more
<agaures> so not many
<Zuplin> i thought that was everything

Most people use mouselook. Some prefer to play without it to keep the oldschool feel. Anything is playable with or without freelook, unless for some reason the wad disables autoaim on their weapons. So it's really up to you.

I started Speedofdoom megawad without the mouselook, it's fun', and yeah, i feel like the old times, doom1, 2.....can play only with keyboard as in 1996 lol.

I only play without mouselook if the server disables it or if it's a duel.

It honestly doesn't bother me because autoaim takes care of everything, I just like having the extra freedom to look up and down. :p

I sometimes disable it on wads where maps use elevation to force adapting to enemies locking areas -Most recent I can think of is BTSX2-. Don't listen to anyone trying to force a certain style on you just play the one you prefer. I like going between keyboard only and keyboard+mouse and don't get why spectators start asking -dont you have a mouse-..

Oh and having both mouselook+autoaim on at the same time is so lazy :Z

OpenGL 90 degree mouselook or bust.

Yeah I use it, but Software mouselook can tend to get a little annoying. Don't really mind it or nothing at all for certain mods and vanilla.

I always use mouse look. Autoaim is crap (though with my Zan 2.0 fix it should be better).

I like the manual approach of freelook + low/no autoaim online and for most mods. P.E.s and lost souls are the worst at distracting rocket and plasma fire. Plus, it sucks when the "horizontal autoaim" kicks in and steers rockets off-center into a wall.

Autoaim basically sucks and it's fickle, since afaik it only uses 3 tracers spaced apart to check for elevation adjustments. This can really mess you up in a duel if a player is in your "cone" of fire but between the three tracers, so it misses when it should have autoaimed, and that isn't uncommon. I guess that's how the game was in 1993 and that's how some people want to play. I play a lot of Chocolate Doom with mapsets and like how it feels and impacts tactics in comparison to default ZDoom behaviour.

Overall it's just down to preference.

Flying monsters are sometimes used as meatshield in oldschool map packs, e.g. shotgunners "behind" cacodemons at high height. Depending on the fight, you could cause an infight between cacodemons and shotgunners by going straight to them (in vanilla they will come to the ground so they keep visible in your front, as stupid as that seems). The author can setup a trap for whoever attempts to take advantage of that exploit. So yeah, it does ruin the gameplay for those map packs designed to be played without freelook and the author can't be blamed for that.

Then again it's up to you, or to the owner of the server you are playing on.

Server without mouselook is a bit easier for me, as I only have to aim on one axis. With mouselook I have to aim with 2 axis. Although, on Mods I usually play with it on.

I believe you can turn freelook off all the time if you want.

I've been a mouselook user since later 0.98; basically I started using it as soon as I found out about OpenGL.

And honestly, it's a good thing I did; I don't think I'd be able to play push without the ability to look up/down.

I know this has already been established here but I just want to say, you play the game how you want not how others say you should, put simply others shouldn't force their opinion on how to play something, the game is indefinitely yours so just enjoy what features it has without worries.

It isn't forcing an opinion, it's advising that you might get more from older wads with mouse look off because that's what they were made for. He made the thread for peoples opinions.

I use it only on maps or mods where it is specifically allowed.

On original maps of doom I consider it cheating, because you reach enemies you arent supposed to reach, because autoaim has a range limit.
