Rules:
- If a website or service requires free registration (for example, Steam or GOG), mention the site
- Don't forget to mention if the game is released for free only for a limited time, or if there may be any other gameplay/access related fees (recurring or otherwise, like a free trial for an MMO that requires payment to continue after the trial ends)
- Don't link to "abandonware" or "warez"! No commercial game "cracks" are allowed as per the forum rules.
If you are unsure if a website you're linking is allowed or not, check to see if it has a Wikipedia entry, if it's listed as an abandonware site do not post it here.
Here is an example of what you could post:

Game: Tyrian 2000
http://www.gog.com/game/tyrian_2000
Account needed: GOG (Good Old Games)
http://www.gog.com
How long it's available: For as long as GOG exists; no time limit
Extra info: The game is also open-source, so even if GOG goes away, you can still get it for free elsewhere, links below

http://www.desura.com/games/opentyrian (requires a Desura account

Here's a list I compiled of free games available on a few of the bigger game store's websites:
There's a "Free To Play" section on Steam, as well as a post on their forums:
http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free%20to%20Play
forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=851573
To play these, you need a Steam account, and their software:
https://store.steampowered.com/login/
http://store.steampowered.com/about/
There's also free games on Desura, via a post on their forums:
www.desura.com/groups/bundeals/forum/th ... sy-of-agtv
To play these, you need a Desura account, and their software:
http://www.desura.com/members/register
http://www.desura.com/install
As well as a free games section on GOG, which are all guaranteed to be DRM free (including their non-free games):
http://www.gog.com/games##price=free
To play these, you need a GOG account:

I'll link this topic by the extension of "Free". I do however, note the very real distinction between f2p and free games. This will be the only post I make for F2P games.
Also, Plants vs. Zombies is free on Origin. If that sort of thing appeals to you.
https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/ ... vs-zombies
Dark Souls is also free on Xbox Live for those of you who would like to play the first game for free.

I personally love
gang garrison 2. Is basically TF2 but more retro ;3
Also, here a list of some steam game that have no store page but are free (or free2play?) Copy paste the steam://blabla in your webbrowser and press enter, it should ask you to launch a application (steam) and install it (assuming steam is already installed!).

Assault Cube,
Assault Cube Reloaded, and
Red Eclipse are the only ones I can think of at the moment. They all pretty much play like quake with military shoot bangs or space guns. They're all made on the same engine which is Cube and Cube2.
Edit: June 10,2014
Found this list of neat looking games which I know one of them is free, Smokin' Guns. not sure about the rest though

Nexuiz, free and open source online FPS. Online and offline with bot support. deathmatch, capture the flag, all that good stuff. Last build was 2.5.2, renamed "Nexuiz Classic", then I believe it has been continued for consoles. The free version has tons of fan-made material, which I always love.
download nexuiz:

nexuiz additional community-made maps:
http://maps.nexuizninjaz.com/
Also
Cube 2 Sauerbraten, another game in the cube engine, alongside of Assaultcube and Red Eclipse. Another online and offline FPS.
