What old retro-fps style do you prefer?

#1

Post by Manhs » Mon Dec 08, 2014 2:33 am

I mean the ones before 2000.
It's hard to say for me, a lot of them are really cool.

Doom is really good but basically, a lot of megawads are not made for mouselook, but i prefer it (well i tried autoaim+NO-mouselook, it's fun too, like in 94.....but mouselook is modern, it's more fun when you can choose the ennemy you want kill in vertical! A lot of ennemies in the same time, it's really full of fun!

Heretic is like doom with a medieval style but with mouselook it seems, i have seen the old heretic game can use up and down with the keyboard, im not sure...i played it like doom in the 90's. You have the items and a beautiful style of the maps (e1m6 cathedral *w* )
Hexen is a beautiful game with his "search" style but there is not enough weapons for each classe, well, it's the point, but anyways, there is the items too !

Duke Nukem 3D, not a lot of music but a very good gameplay style, you can jump, swim, the gameplay is fast, duke nukem is hilarous (specially when he die by a rocket *splurk*hooooo), the maps are like "city style", it was really a crazy thing when this game was released, i loved it !

I did a lot of stands for Megaman 8 bit deathmatch and 1 for doom.
I want host more old retro-fps style but i need to play them, first....

Hexen was really nice, new physic platforms but not a lot of weapons, but at least, you have 3 characters and some items, the gameplay is really labyrinth but i liked the style!

Quake: I played it a little! The atmosphere is too weird for me but it's a great game! Good gameplay, i need to finish to first one....

I didnt try blood or others...

Darkforces (starwars) was really fun too, a lot of weapons, nice maps;..

What are your favorite retro-fps? (before 2000 around)

(sorry, again, im french ^^' )

You mentioned hexen 2 times.

Anyway, I'll have to go with the goresque game Quake 2. I like it all around for single player.

Descent and Descent 2 by Parallax Software.
I dont care about how bad your maps are. Everything can be improved.

Not that it might count, but I also liked Banjo-Tooie's FPS segments and the FPS deathmatch maps.[/spoiler]

'Nuff said.

Ditto.

And Descent 3 (1999 I think) was an orgasm for me. The beautiful levels, the unforgiving AI, and the adorable Guide-Bot that you can name. I also like to play it with a PS3 Sixaxis controller for 200% more nausea!

Descent 3 was a big disappointment to me...

Horrible AI - even the Guidebot is there a brain with vacuum. The levels arent anymore these nice mines with descent 2 even themed (for example lava, water, ice), the weapons all make no fun to shoot with, because they make you feel all ultra weak, while the enemies move so fast that you have trouble to hit them with the weak weapons. Even the Gauss replacement is a disaster. Weak damage, enemy gets pushed away instead of painlocked, the fusion cannon robot survived the earthshaker missile. Maybe its more enjoyable at something lower than skill level "ace", but the game is only average to me. That stays.

Descent 2 is the best game of the series. And has a awesome AI, awesome weapons which makes fun to shoot with, lets you feel you have strong weapons and so on.

But I especially loved the intelligent AI of descent 2 and thats totally gone with d3.

ROTT and duke nukem:time to kill are the first ones coming in mind if we don't consider the ones already mentioned in this thread(some duke3d purists may dislike the latter since it's basically a tomb raider clone filled with more fps elements, but i used to have a lot of fun with it back then nonetheless)

Doom 64. Don't regret it at all years ago; I still like playing with no mouselook. Oh, it's atmosphere and eerie music. Captures everything perfectly. Map20 anyone?

Goldeneye 007 for obvious reasons.

Top 3 would certainly be:

1 - Doom(2), for both the SP and the Deathmatch. I play it all the damn time, so that's no surprise. After all, it's why we're all here, right?
2 - Duke3D. I don't play it nearly as much, but the map design and things it added to the basic formula of Doom are just amazingly fun, funny and memorable.
3 - Goldeneye, just barely. It's a lot of fun, even despite some flaws. (It's called hindsight for a reason though, huh?) The Bond theme remixes are nothing short of awesome.

There are others I enjoy, others I don't, but the majority of Doom-clones were generic and horrible. The only redeeming factor about some of them was that they reminded me of Doom, which in turn led to them being played for 30 minutes then never touched again.

All the hersey. Can't see shadow warrior even mentioned in this thread!

Eh I'll go with hexen :P Didn't get bothered with only 4 weapons per class like a lot of people bash it for. -Although I can't play it without removing\nerfing centaurs shield.
