What's your opinion on Iron Sights?

#1

Post by Captain Kupo » Mon Dec 30, 2013 12:19 am

Whats your opinion on them in first person shooters in general? Do you absolutely despise them?
Do you feel that they make some games better? Do you think new games rely to much on them? In games where there are iron sights, do you ever use them?

I feel like they add to some games, especially for precision weapons, but that needing to use them all the time can get annoying.

Only really play Arma that has them, pretty necessary in that game.

Depends. Is the game a deliberate tactical simulator, or is it a fast run and gun arcade shooter? Does it reduce mobility or even completely freeze the player? Will bullets magically leave the barrel at 45 degrees if I don't look down some metal prongs? Does looking down sights somehow tighten the choke on a shotgun against all logic?

Pulled off well, like say, Project MSX, it can work seamlessly in the run-and-gun format the way we all play this game for. When it becomes mandatory to screech everything to a halt to do or hit bloody anything, it becomes "stop-and-go", which is a feature many people see as a point of the cesspool of "modern military shooters". It honestly depends, but something like Resident Evil 4 (great game) forcing you to completely stop and then aim your weapon to shoot at all is an example of the mechanic just coming off as clunky during fights.

360noscope 2ez4me.

But Medi basically hit the nail on the head - it's all about how and in what it's used.

The only fps I played where I actually fit they were needed was brothers in arms, other than that I find them added to justify making certain weapons useful regardless of the users aim skill "Hi snipers who can't hit an elephant without scoping"

Well most of the time you enter third-person mode after you get in cover, then you really don't need iron sights and can order your fire teams to do the job.

Even though Medicris nailed the point, as -Jes- said, I was thinking to mention how I appreciate it in some games.
To answer you, pick Killing Floor. I don't know if you've ever played it, but in case you don't know that you can not use a crosshair; in this game I find IS justified, helpful and a core element that helps to make it a great game.

On authentic difficulty, all the allied teams do is get ohko'd or swarmed to oblivion.

Exactly.

Also wondering why Doom is in ironsight.

Makes me want to post a Doom meme :

For the sake of research and verification, I threw together a quick shotgun weapon with iron sights.
How do you guys feel about an implementation like this?

The Ranger - New class for HeXen.
ZDoom Wars - I drew some pictures.
Samsara - Some class-based mod I guess?
Metroid: Dreadnought - I am a dumb fanboy.
DemonSteele - ~come with me to anime world~

I like iron sights because they make shooting less bland.
I think it would be cool if a game had iron sights just in case you want some zooming or said game doesn't have a crosshair and people forget where the center of the screen is. =P

IMO Iron Sights should only be used for more accurate shots (In terms of aiming, not barrel spread). But Hip shots should not be retardedly inaccurate.
I find them only useful if HipShots have the same accuracy and you have no crosshair.

Iron sights are really not needed on shotguns.

Not unless it has a choke or fires darts/slugs. Then they can be useful.

Well, yeah, Term's shotgun feels awkward. I can't really say what's wrong other than its slow fire rate, but there's something else...

The funny thing about iron sights in killing floor is that they do absolutely nothing concerning your accuracy. That's right - they just slow you down and your accuracy is always exactly the same, iron-sights or not.

Which is why I never use them because I play Doom and can instantly determine the center of the screen anytime.

To be honest, iron-sights in doom feel out of place. Iron-sights are mostly welcome in games with headshots(or any other kind of gameplay mechanic that requires precision shooting). In Doom, there are no headshots, it does not matter if you hit the target in the head or in the toe, and since targets are generally large enough, there is just no need for precision.

Not to mention that a shotgun is generally not a precision weapon.

Ehh, I do kind of like Ironsights but only when they're really necessary.
For weapons like rifles and such, it helps.
I'd still like to be able to properly aim without them though.

Iron Sights are OK and I will admit being able to center my weapon reminds me of a certaint game everyone plays here ;) intact when I first saw them I refered to it as "Doom Mode" but is it REALY nessasary to have hipfiring be stupidly inaccurate. It slows down the pace if you ALWAYS have to aim down your sights.
