Any persistent IRC clients for iphone?

Yo. I've recently gotten into the world of smartphones--my sister lent me her Android for a few days to get used to smartphones, and I fell in love with the idea of being able to do AIM, IRC, Skype, Steam, and etc shit on the go.

So I ended up buying an iphone. Which I'm aware is kind of like falling in love with a Neo Geo and then getting a CPS2 board but whatever, it's a smartphone, I can do shit on the go now! I've got AIM, I've got Skype, I've got Steam, I've got everything! Eeeexcept for the IRC client.
See, the Android IRC client had a really awesome feature where even if the phone was in standby/sleep mode, it would stay connected and it would still receive messages. All of the IRC clients I've tried for the iphone disconnect you after 15 minutes of idle.

This is a gigantic kick in the pisser.
Are there any IRC clients for the iphone that remain persistent and keep you connected until you manually disconnect?

As an iPhone user, I've tried almost every IRC client in the App Store, and none of them have persistent sessions. There MIGHT be a good IRC app that features this on Cydia, but I have never actually bothered to Jailbreak my iPhone, so I wouldn't know.

Really, there is no such thing as persistent on an iPhone. All applications close after 10 minutes of not directly being open.
All the other clients have a Push Service to check for new messages, as for IRC, that wouldn't really be possible. Especially according to Apple's strict standards.

Anyway, regardless, the best possible IRC client I recommend would be LimeChat. It's only $5.49.
I use that and I find it works really well.
Unfortunately, nothing else I have tried for free even stood close to what you can get on Android for Free.

The only way you could get apps to stay opened on an iPhone is to Jailbreak it, which AFAIK cannot be done on iOS 6.1.3 and 7.
Note that I really don't endorse people to Jailbreak their iDevices...
And after that, install 2 specific applications. 1 to force all apps to use the Native method and suspend to RAM when not focused (optional for keep running regardless, but is unstable), and another which changes to 10 minute timeout to infinite.
I won't be naming them.

If you just bought the iPhone Brand New (Most likely iPhone 5, 5c or 5s), Jailbreaking it instantly voids the warranty and Apple can refuse any service to this product. It breaks their TOS.
Also, soon Jailbreaking devices will be illegal in the US. See my next post...
And on top of that, Jailbreaking without really knowing what you are doing or installing can really pose some security issues.
It's not a good idea just for the sake of doing it, or for something as small as this.

... Says who? Jailbreaking your iPhone has been kept legal (and will remain legal through 2015) under an exemption in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. You might be confusing "jailbreaking" (disabling security and allowing non-Apple content) with "unlocking" (ripping off your phone carrier by untethering your phone from their service, allowing you to use prepaid cards). THAT was officially made illegal in the US in January of this year.

And on top of that, Jailbreaking without really knowing what you are doing or installing can really pose some security issues.

Well, that's kind of inherent of the jailbreaking process itself, which disables some security in order to let the user do things that they want to.

Sorry, it's just what I heard. I should have made it clear that I am not totally sure.
And I am talking about Jailbreaking. I know Unlocking is illegal, even here in Australia.

Edit: Talked to Tiger about it, seems there is a lot of misunderstanding between Jailbreaking and Unlocking, even over most of the Internet.

If you use Colloquy for iPhone, and if you can set up the connection-bouncing feature from your desktop computer (if you're on Mac OS 10.7 or later it's easy to do with Colloquy itself; if you're on Windows or an older Mac OS version it's more complicated and I haven't been able to figure it out), you can get the best of both worlds, saving battery life and keeping a persistent IRC connection that's available from your phone. When you're using connection bouncing, you can allow the phone client to disconnect when you're idle, while still having notifications sent to you if someone sends you a private message or highlights your name, and upon reconnecting it'll automatically send over the backlogs you missed. This allows you to stay connected while your phone is idling in your pocket for however long you like, and not have to worry about it due to the drastically reduced battery usage compared to having your phone keep the constant connection running by itself.

seriously? so its impossible to get a iphone with prepaid cards? thats just silly.

Marketing, marketing, marketing.


Some carriers claim to sell "prepaid" iPhones, but they're really not prepaid in the traditional sense. They're more like, "pay $60-80 at the beginning of every month or you don't get service for that month". Which is even worse than a 2-year contract. And there's always strings attached. Like unlimited texting but VERY limited talk time, or vice versa.
