Thoughts on the name
Since I've been seeing a few people have different thoughts on the new name, I thought this would be a good chance to open up discussion in the form of a thread.
I wasn't on when this name was chosen so this is mostly to get opinions on it, and possibly any alternative names that could be used. (This post is a bit old by now)
EDIT: Ok, so that's a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives. We've got some that love it, and some that uhh.. don't love it!
Just a reminder to regular users, since this post is in the Staff Discussions section, posts need to be approved before showing up, so send your post only once please

RE: Thoughts on the name
I personally do not like the name, but I can live with it. From what I heard, the name was chosen executively because all members would never be able to agree with a name.
However, I can't tell you the best possible way to resolve it. You can either live with it, or have a poll of selective names.
If the name is indeed going to change, you better change it now.

I'll tell you one thing, it's better than DoomPrime or Fluiddoom.

RE: Thoughts on the name
I've got to admit I really dislike the name, and probably would have spoken up earlier if I had known about it before the gears seemed to already be in motion.
It's overly lengthy and convoluted, and means absolutely nothing. Compare it to something like "SkullTag" which is just two simple and relevant words put together. It's short, it's memorable, and it flows off the tongue nicely. Even "Odamex" is short and easy to read, write, and remember, despite it having no obvious meaning.
I've been seeing the word Zandronum constantly for the past few days and I still can't usually remember it correctly without having to first go through Rick Zantorum, Zanitorium, Zirconium, and all the other overly lengthy meaningless Z- words in my vocabulary.

RE: Thoughts on the name
I'm personally ok with whatever name we come up with, since it'll take approximately a month for people to get used to it. Though if I had to suggest a name, I'd go with something catchy rather than something that makes sense or has a certain meaning. Unfortunately, I don't have any exact name to suggest.

RE: Thoughts on the name
1000s of names were suggested, problem is nobody would agree with each other, so it was just a constant waste of time.
However the current name, I didn't like at first, but so far I'm getting use to it so my opinion is now neutral.

IGOR LIKE "SpaceCS". IT FIT THEME (SPACE) AND PORT(CLIENT/SERVER), AND IS CATCHY AND EASY TO REMEMBER

I see no reason to change it.

Just think about the Wii. Worst name for a console ever and yet I no longer see anyone insisting on calling it the Nintendo Revolution.

RE: Thoughts on the name
Plus we've got this awesome logo:

(why isn't this at the top of the forum any more)
EDIT: But yeah, I like hearing the different things about it. Personally I'm kind of neutral, but it is a bit of an "odd" name. Outside of the oddness I'm mostly wondering if a cooler name will pop up some time before we end up making a release or whatever
EDIT2: I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to figure out what Zandronum could abbreviate to.
I've seen ZDM and Zan so far, a few people said "ZD" but that's in use by at least 2 other things.
Maybe this would help in the long/convoluted area?

RE: Thoughts on the name
A name is indeed whatever it is made to be, but it rolling off the tongue and being easy to remember is important nonetheless. If changing the name is possible at this stage, a community poll would surely leave us with a good name and a happy community. For some reason, to me, Zandronum sound like something out of chex quest. Then again, I've never played chex quest, so there you go.

RE: Thoughts on the name
The main reason why we fixed a name is that we already wasted way too much time with naming discussions that didn't seem to lead anywhere. I personally think the name is not great, but sufficient. In particular because I agree with Blzut, people will stop caring about the name soon.
The name is a fusion of Z (as in ZDoom) + Andromeda + Infernum, so if you want to give it a meaning it would be space hell and that's how we came up with it. And when we decided to use it, Zandronum got zero Google hits. So if you search for it now, you are guaranteed to only get relevant hits.
Since we already registered the domain, created the source fork and renamed most of the stuff in the source, it's pretty much too late to change it again.

My complaint is our text logo at the top of the forum looks too much like a green version of the ZDoom logo

Zandronum is just three words put together; and for me it's no harder to say, read or remember than odamex.esselfortium wrote: It's overly lengthy and convoluted, and means absolutely nothing. RE: Thoughts on the name
Well as much as some people may or may not like like the name as-is, there is definitely the chance that people will not like it. Especially the new guys who are trying to register to the forum now. Their opinions do count, but I will have to agree with Torr (and thus, Blzut as well on this) and say that it's really only going to matter in the short-term. In the long-term, new players will find Zandronum and perhaps even like the name, who knows.
Plus, we also must consider the fact that we are not here on a new forum just because of a name change. That's just a side-effect, so to speak. No matter what the side-effect turns out to be, it will always be a side-effect.

For some reason Zandronum sounded like a Psygnosis game to me when I first heard itesselfortium wrote: It's three lengthy, obscure words that mean absolutely nothing combined.
Here's the logo superimposed over a Roger Dean replica to illustrate my point:

(Roger Dean did Psygnosis and Yes covers/posters)
If the name wasn't taken, I'd suggest we change it to Awesome:
