Does this still happen in 3.0?

Yes it does.

Does this happen on Windows and Linux or is it limited to one of them?

Its a server instance issue, but to the best of my knowledge the servers run Linux. Its the Painkiller servers.

How long does it usually take to crash the server? Can you test it with your own Windows server locally?

I only run Linux Exclusively. I can setup Linux my own Linux servers, but they seem to be the same. I have no debugging symbols for these binaries.

It seems to be random when it happens. It has happened in the "Tower of Chaos" mod under vanilla Hexen.

Are you familiar with gcc and gdb (or clang / lldb)? You could compile your own server with debug symbols using using the latest version from our repository and use gdb to get a backtrace.

EDIT:'https://wiki.zandronum.com/Compiling_Zandronum_on_Linux [^]' has some information on debugging. I didn't check though whether the documentation is on par with 3.0.

I am familiar with gdb. I can try and get a backtrace, I don't know how much it will help, keep in mind, this happens on the Painkiller servers.

I should ad, I've never had anyone make RPM Packages of Zandronum.

A backtrace is a good starting point to find the cause of a crash. If you manage to reproduce the crash on your local server and get a backtrace from there, that should be sufficient. No need to reproduce the crash on Painkiller (unless it only happens on this server).

If you compile and test locally, you don't need to create RPM packages.

I got it to crash locally using Wrath of Cronos 2.0. Here is what I did:

I booted up in Doom 2 with all wrath of Cronos mods enabled, then used IDFA/Give all to max everything out. A summoned minions and boom, crash, unfortunately. my build of Zan 3.0 didn't produce any debugging symbolsso, I just got alot of Hex info. I'll show you my logs, regardless.

How did you compile Zandronum? If you compile in debug mode, you should get the debug symbols.

There shouldn't be any need to build an RPM or to extract the symbols. Just compile Zandronum with debug symbols and start the binary with gdb. Hopefully that is fast enough. If not, we'll have to think about a more sophisticated solution.

With cmake set CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug, compile as usual and start the binary with gdb, i.e.
gdb -ex run --args ./zandronum arg1 arg2 ...

(no guarantees that the syntax is correct)

When Zandronum crashes, you should be directly in the gdb console and can get a proper backtrack with "bt".

I have reason to believe this is related to the Wrath of Cronos "Raise Dead" ability of the Necromancer. During a nearly full runthrough of Hexen Deathkings, and it only crashed when I reached the Necropolis. This is because unless cheats are used, its normally at least that long to reach level 27, as the Necromancer, playing the game normally. It was not until that started being used that the instance crashed.

Update: Polymorph and Necromancer's Metamorph make the crash reproducible.

Where's the crash log? Please follow the instructions in comment 0003026:0017053.

If the crash is reproducible now, even better than a crash log would be step by step instructions on how to reproduce the crash.

Okay. Here is my usual configuration:

.host 1 version=3.0 iwad="hexen.wad" gamemode="coop" skill=3 data=false config="wrathofcronos-v1.cfg"
wad="iwad:hexdd.wad,
wrathofcronosr2.pk3,
kfhj_woc_patch_v7.pk3,
ketchupV5_nogibs_splattersonly.pk3,
hexcoop_core_puzzle_b6.wad,
hexcoop_maps_hexen_b4.wad,
hexcoop_maps_hexdd_b4.wad"
hostname="Hexen Deathkings with Wrath of Cronos and Leveling Patch"

Play as the Necromancer, You can use cheats to speed up this process, use the 'Raise Dead' skill.

Possbility :
1. Use Metamorph. Upon changing back the game will crash with the Address 11 error.

2. There is a trap in the castle of grief. This trap occasionally fires a dart that turns anything standing in the center into pigs like the Porkulator item. kill the enemies in the tower, then use the Necromancer Raise dead ability to raise them from the dead as allied units and let them get Porkulated by the trap.

You will notice as pigs they don't move. I suspect them getting porkulated has caused Zandronum to throw a memory error.

3. As the Necromancer, go to the Vivarium bonus level. kill the enemies in the level and ressurrect them. On either side of the level are traps that occasionally fire a porkulator dart. If friendly enemies get hit by the darts en enough numbers, or you get hit, the game will crash.

Can you condense this to a minimal example wad, just extracting the parts of the Necromancer necessary for the crash?

If not, can you extended the step by step instructions for someone who has never played Wrath of Cronos? Which cheats to use in which order, which commands to execute, etc.?

Upon getting into the game as the necromancer, make sure you have sv_cheats 1 turned on.

Under Customize Controls, set your RPG Menu Keys and four skill keys to whatever pleases you. go to the Console menu, and type "give all". ensure you are running wrathofcronos2.pk3, cheats in 1.9 and lower make it impossible to increase your stats correctly.

run "give all" in the Console. You should immediately jump to level 160.
The raise dead ability allows the Necromancer to function like an Arch-vile from Doom II. Enemies raised by the Necromancer function just as they do in the regular game but are your ally. They will follow you, and attack enemies. However some enemies, such as bosses, Afrits, and Specific mini-bosses like Bormereth the Fire Ettin can't be raised. They will have the level, and HP they did as an enemy.

The Raise dead ability allows you to practically raise a whole level's enemies as your allies.

To get raise dead: (You will have more than enough skill power to do way more than this.)

Train the Shadow Ability to at least level 7.
Train the Golem to at least level 7.
Train the Revenant to at least 7.
Train the Death Knight to at least 7.

Allocate your stat and skill points accordingly. You should have the ability to train every skill to level 10 the game allows, apply skill/stat points with the space Bar.

Note that whenever you transition levels, your enemies re-balance to reflect your new level. If you cheat on Map01 and then go into Map02, expect enemies to suddenly have a level of 130 and to hit like a ton of bricks...

Use changemap to map to a busy level, I reccommend map35. (use changemap, not map! using map will reset everything!) This will take you to the game's final hub, Necropolis.summon your minions using your other skill buttons you didn't use for Raise dead, defense, duck out of the line of fire from the insanely powerful reiver variants.

Using Black Flasks can also help. Black Flasks summon an undead Knight Archer from Hexen 2. They function as allies by default. they will provide cover.

Start Raising the reivers using your Raise dead skill. At this level, Reivers will have several variations. Including Ghosts. These can be raised as allies and at this level, several per use of the raise dead command. The raised reivers will gradually mop up the level for you. In conjunction with your knight Archers.

(note that as you do this you are filling up the ram as the game has to allocate RAM for all the enemies you raised.)

Go seek out the hub's Bonus level, Vivarium, It should be in the southern part of the level, a visible portal with no doors

-DO NOT- enter Zedek, Melkinir, or Tradactus's tombs. Doing so crosses a linedef that makes the Vivarium shut and you will have to use the map command to reset everything, and thats a pain!

Once in the Vivarium, use your default minions, Dark Servants, or Knight Archers to fight off the enemies, and use raise dead to start reviving them.
Because they will follow you, coral them to the sides of the levels where the Brown Chaos Serpents are. The Polymorph darts will start changing you and your minions into pigs, eventually crashing the game.

Here are the functions each WAD Provides:
iwad: hexen.wad - Hexen base game.
iwad: hexdd.wad - Deathkings Expansion.
wrathofcronosr2.pk3 - Wrath of Cronos 2.0
kfhj_woc_patch_v7.pk3 - Multiplayer level balancing patch. Applies only to multiplayer, if a new player joins, they start with the average level of all other players.

ketchupV5_nogibs_splattersonly.pk3 - ketchup mod - purely cosmetic. Makes some enemies bleed when struck. only does blood effects, and no gibs/alternate death animations as those can stop you from gaining experience.

hexcoop_core_puzzle_b6.wad - ensures that all "Puzzle Pieces/Quest items" are shared between players. Mandatory Part of HexCoop Mod Puzzles won't function otherwise. Doesn't affect keys.

hexcoop_maps_hexen_b4.wad - Fixes several problems with the Hexen base game. The biggest is that in the Gibbet, there is a script that doesn't work correctly preventing you from fighting the second Herisiarch battle. This fixes that. You can pass this point without cheating.
(Requires hexcoop_core_puzzle_b6.wad)

hexcoop_maps_hexdd_b4.wad - Fixes several problems with Deathkings. Namely, Deathkings was supposed to manually start you on map41. This was a feature of the hexdd executable for DOS. For reasons I will likely never understand, hexdd.wad over writes maps 31 though 35 with Deathmatch levels. This moves the deathmatvh maps to 61-65, and puts the base game maps 31-35 back. It also tweaks map40 to allow you to progress to map41 after Korax is defeated.

I found and fixed a crash reason for Metamorph by backporting a SetAmmoCapacity crash fix from ZDoom. Can you check if Metamorph works now in the new beta build?

Can you also check the other crashes? If they still happen, can somebody condense them to a minimal example wad? To make debugging this feasible, the crashes need to be reproducible quickly.

I have tested it, and it happens less often, it does not happen with the Necromancer's Metamorph, but it does still happen in the Vivarium when the dart traps turn the monsters into pigs, client side only so far, but it is the same error.

The pigs seem to function now. They don't stand still like they used too.
