 Is this particularly bothersome to you? I've known about this for a long time (probably since the beginning) but figured having the column forced to the size of the icon would be more useful than fitting it to the text (which could be any size with translations) and that would just waste screen space.

 No, not at all. Could be something shorter like P or no text at all (icons make sense). Though if that was something long-known of and kept for a reason, just close this.
