Well, according to the code, the logic is that you are always an ally of yourself. So having the icon above your own head is kind of superfluous, but it is at least consistent in the sense that it is always above your head. Or are there some exceptions where it's not above your head?

Not a bug, the player is his own ally. IMO this shouldn't be changed.
