0004046: Change prompt when attempting to join servers with missing commercial wad
When attempting to join a server with a commercial wad that one doesnt own, doomseeker will prompt information about it and also prompt the option of installing freedoom. However, the latter is bad behavior for joining multiplayer servers, as Zandronum will drop the player due to failed protected lump authentication error, which is a rather confusing error to the player. IMO, correct behavior should only have freedoom as a fallback option for singleplayer, and direct the user to an information page about getting a legal copy of the needed doom wad if its a multiplayer server.

After looking into history a bit, this seems to be rather a different issue where zandronum is more strict on checking the iwad where in the past freedoom wouldve sufficed as a doom2.wad replacement for multiplayer gameplay? Not very sure so this ticket is perhaps not correct.

freedoom should be a valid replacement for the commercial iwads as long as the servers are running mods that replace the iwad maps. Let's say that: if you run a server with gothicdm.wad on MAP01, the server should be joinable both by the players who run with doom2.wad and players who use freedoom as the replacement. However, it is normal to be booted from a server that runs only the plain doom2.wad when trying to join it with freedoom, because freedoom2's MAP01 is different from doom2.wad's MAP01.

In the latter case we can't do much about it. In the former case, which is also the more common case, the player should be able to run with freedoom, so we do the right thing to propose freedoom and offer its installation.

Doomseeker also informs that "the missing file comes from a game that can be purchased", although it indeed doesn't provide any links to guide the user. Do you have any suggestion for a good website for that?

When i made this ticket i incorrectly made assumptions about why doomseeker downloads freedoom due to the odd error from zandronum which led me to think that freedoom was not a good multiplayer alternative, im sorry about that.

As for a good website for buying the game(s), i dont think theres a one size fits all, with steam, GoG, epic, microsoft all selling direct PC edition with extractable, and i know zandronum automatically detects files found in at least steam and GoG paths.
