actually, while playing hexen i came across another way to get a client_giveinventory warning

host a hexen server on map02 with sv_nomonsters 1
warp -283 -1105
pick up all 3 weapon pieces in front of you
you will get a warning for the 2 pieces that dont belong to your class

Tested with r231220. I was unable to reproduce the inventory messages in doom2 map01. I also did not get the inventory messages in the Hexen scenario outlined above.
