WADSeeker sites list (Updated!)

#1

Post by ZzZombo » Sun Jul 22, 2012 4:29 pm

Hi there! I think everybody knows how badly sux default WADSeeker search list. Most of WAD hostings seems don't work at all. So I went over and collected huge list of sites that appears to have downloadable WADs.
Spoiler: Link-list ([color=#32CD32 (Open)
Updated![/color] 30.07.12)]
Sorted by relevance and stability. Additionally, I tried to put smaller hostings first to speed up the process of seeking.

=== Seems to have the most of popular WADs, official sites ===

If you wish to report any mistakes in my list you are welcome. Also if I missed some neat WAD hostings please, post them here. After a while I'll open a ticket on tracker to update the default DoomSeeker WADSeeker list.

For manual download you can try to use http://www.doomarchive.com/ListFiles.asp.

All sites that are currently hardcoded into Wadseeker's default site list are working. Furthermore, Wadseeker can be configured to also use /idgames archive.

If there are sites on your list that offer a good, large collection of WADs then they can be added to the default list. We won't bother with small collections because Wadseeker will waste its time visiting them only to discard the results most of the time.

And most of all:
Wadseeker strongly depends on server admins providing download URLs for the WADs they're hosting on their servers. If you're trying to join a server and Wadseeker fails to download the WAD then it's the server admin's fault.
Doomseeker - a real answer to cross-platform server browser.
Doomseeker dev builds - unofficial Doomseeker builds for Windows.
Gamer's Proxy - a program to emulate ping and packet losses.

What happened to the good old "last ditch effort" search google thing? I miss that since it actually managed to work half the time. (I'm aware Wadseeker never did this and it was the old program I forgot the name of.)

Your experiences are different than mine. For me GetWAD kept going to YouTube or javascript sites, where it went into a very long chain of hopeless jumps.

It started working half-decent when I implemented the sites filter for GetWAD, where you could filter away youtube and other sites that were certain to have no results. But, in the end, if you have to do a Google search for a WAD, then it's probably faster and more accurate to just do it manually.

1) Not true. If you saw bottom of the list there are 4 default sites that doesn't work so they have been placed here. Regarding IDGames archive... I assumed that nobody disables it in WADSeeker.
2) Small collections are tend to become large ones  . And they can be used as last resort if large hostings failed to find needed WAD. Also, the first small hostings in the list are hostings that have popular WADs so user trying to get duel32.pk3 or udm3.wad will find them quicker than if there were huge hostings on top. Other small hostings are on bottom, after working default sites.
3) Go talk with those admins. What? You didn't do it? Shut up then, the thread isn't about bad/lazy/fool admins.

I didn't find any rules for submitting WADs there except file size limits so it's safer to put it in the middle.

Because I wasn't able to check every page there can be some junk or such things. Removed. But AFAIK WADSeeker refuses to download commercial IWADs.

1) Not true. If you saw bottom of the list there are 4 default sites that doesn't work so they have been placed here.
Wrong. Check the source code if you don't believe me.

Lovely choice of words.
Doomseeker - a real answer to cross-platform server browser.
Doomseeker dev builds - unofficial Doomseeker builds for Windows.
Gamer's Proxy - a program to emulate ping and packet losses.

Should be noted that http://spaceserv.zapto.org/ only works when PUNISH3R's around. I know, it's weird like that, has to do with his computer.

ZzZombo: Don't get hostile with Zal. He may be Polish, but he really knows his shit. Especially when it comes to DoomSeeker.

I never wanted to get hostile with anyone, not my style. But I have those sites from time I first time setup DoomSeeker, I think it was more than 1 year ago.

It's already on the bottom of the list, where I placed unstable/unverified sites.

You can go ahead and remove the /GVH of my http out. I had to remove the folder, and wads inside, due to space issues. That and everytime I look at a GVH server, it seems to have an updated wad, and yet I'm unable to even download the file on the server.

Also I know I have more folders in /wads then that. heh

EDIT: on second thought, just add http://devilhunter.rfc1337.net/wads/ It SHOULD search every folder for the wad that it needs.

Sorry, but seems WADSeeker unable to to recursive seek into subfolders so there we go. GVH folder will be removed soon from the list.

Welp that Sucks. Would be nice if it did. I haven't been able to mess around with doomseeker, other then just setting it up to use Zandro when needed.

Why should it? Wadseeker sees such directory listing as normal WWW pages. It only checks URLs that have the seeked file name somewhere in them. If it started to recursively visit all URLs on every page then it wouldn't stop until the next millennia and probably still wouldn't find the seeked file.
